UPDATE: Shelter-in-Place Lifted in Eastern Kanawha County
An ammonia leak forced a shelter-in-place for everyone in the town of Carbon in the Cabin Creek area of Kanawha County.

Metro 911 is reporting that the anhydrous ammonia leak in the Carbon area of Cabin Creek in Kanawha County is now under control.

Crews are now working to clean up the leaked chemical.



UPDATE @ 10:48am
A West Virginia State Police Trooper tells WSAZ.com someone apparently tried to break in to the tank, causing the leak. Investigators are still on the scene gathering evidence and looking for any possible suspects.

Troopers say Penn Virginia owns the tank. Republic Energy just leases the property from the company.



CABIN CREEK, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A shelter-in-place for everyone in the town of Carbon in the Cabin Creek area of Kanawha County has been lifted.

Kanawha County Metro 911 says a 1000 gallon tank of anhydrous ammonia is leaking at Republic Energy.

The leak was reported around 6:45 a.m. The shelter was lifted at 10 a.m.

Dispatchers say there is no danger at this time to anyone outside of the mine property.

There was a cloud of about 100 feet surrounding the tank. A Dupont haz-mat team is on the scene.

Carbon Road remains closed.

There have been no injuries

911 says if you feel like you are in any form of distress, stay inside and call 911 for assistance.

Emergency crews remain on the scene.

If this was reported at 6:45 am. why is it just being posted on wsaz at 7:39 am. Slow on the reporting? How many people could have already been affected by this chemical?
