HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Tuesday marked the last day to register to vote for the general election in West Virginia, and record crowds showed up to make sure they can cast their ballots.
Cabell County election officials said nearly 800 new voters registered. Christal Perry showed up to change her registration from another county.
"There's more talk about this election," she said. "With the presidential election, you have a woman and the first African-American. It's an important election no matter how you vote."
Jeremiah Sammons was registering to vote for the first time and hopes his vote will make a difference.
"I have family in the lower income bracket," he said. "They need help."
Kanawha County's courthouse also had a surge of last-minute voters filling out forms so they can cast their ballots.
Cabell County Clerk Karen Cole said she is seeing a lot more interest than past elections.
"They're already checking to see if their registration is intact and ready to go and what precinct they're in," she said.
Nearly 600 people requested absentee ballots in Cabell County -- a record number, Cole said.
Close to 59,000 people in Cabell County alone are registered for this general election. Cole said election officials are taking precautions to make sure there isn't any voter registration fraud.
Cole said that if people change party affiliation, their signatures are verified to make sure they match. Also, first time voters must show their identification when they come to the polls.
Early voting begins Wednesday in West Virginia.
