WORTHINGTON, Ky. (WSAZ) – Several families who live in a local trailer park have been told they have 75 days to pack up their mobile homes and move.
They just received the notices last week and have to be out by Jan. 1. It turns out that the city is the landlord, and it wants out of the rental property business as soon as possible.
Resident Jim Huff has lived in his trailer in Worthington for more than 22 years. He grew up there and is raising his own children there. He said times are tough.
"I'm in between jobs and have four kids," he said.
The city owns the property that houses nine trailers. Among those affected are seven families, including 18 children. The city of Worthington, however, wants out of the landlord business.
"If those trailers catch fire, it's a liability," said Glenn Stephenson, a Worthington City Council member
He said the decision isn't personal -- just business and a difficult decision that's been tossed around for years. The city eventually plans to expand its sewer plant and wants the land cleared.
"We’re willing to work with them," Stephenson said of the trailer park's residents.
Huff, however, wants more than a few days or even weeks of notice. He said moving a family on limited resources during the holidays will break him.
"I don't have the money," he said.
Another obstacle for the residents is that many trailer parks will not accept mobile homes that are older than four years. Most of the Worthington residents' homes are well over 15 to 20 years old, meaning they may have to spend more money buying land, a new home or renting an apartment.

Wow, I can't believe how ridiculous this is. They have been turning a profit for over 20 years on these people and want to kick them off the land in virtually no time at all. It took me months to close on buying my house. So, if they can't even move the home or buy one what are they supposed to do? They should take some of the profits they've made for over 20 years and pay to relocate the people. If the residents owned their own land they would have to by the laws of imminent domain. I'm not sure how renting land for trailers goes, but you would think it would be similar. If they're making money on the sale for the plant, they could use some of that to move the people as well! And whoever said have a bake sale is crazy- who's going to raise thousands to tens of thousands of dollars selling cookies over 2 months! Get another job? It's still only 2 months and there's a lag for your first check! at fulltime minimum wage, they'd only make @ $1500- maybe not enough to move by Christmas!
You are correct the rest of the city does not agree with me. That is why we elected the same city councilmen as before. And Mr. Stephenson was two votes away from having the most on the ballot.
I have lived in Worthington all my life to and you are wrong everyone is not thrilled about it. I am not for putting them in the streets in the winter, especially at the Holiday's so speak for yourself. No matter what, there are innocent people in that park. Some will need help I am sure to move. If this city really cared they would offer some type of help for those who are really in need. I hope you never get in a position like this, will anyone care for you? I am so sick of people like you who sit back and judge the rest not even caring or even given real thought about what someone else might be going through. No matter what you think the cause of this problem is, still doesn't excuse it. Get a conscience. DO YOU KNOW WHAT ONE IS? I will be glad to explain if need be.
