A boating excursion on the Kanawha River took a dangerous turn. Police say three friends were boating when one jumped off the boat near Rand to take a swim. The current swept him away.

Fire officials tell us that no one on the boat was wearing a life jacket including the missing swimmer.

Charleston dive team and the Malden Fire Department searched the river for hours for the missing swimmer.

Watch and wait that's all that neighbors could do as dozens of emergency workers searched for a missing swimmer in eastern Kanawha county.

One man was eating dinner when he saw the swimmer go under. He ran to help.

"I saw him go under once, came back up, went under again, and didn’t come back up."

People in rand say no matter what time of the year the Kanawha River is a dangerous place to swim.

"That water's really bad I don't know why those people are out here today. To boat is one thing, but to swim on that river in these conditions is crazy."

Police have not released the missing swimmers name but they say he's 42 years old. The search for the swimmer continues.
