Flooding in Westmoreland
People who live there say the water came up so quickly...they had very little time to get out of their homes. We heard from a lady who says she lost everything and does not’t understand how this could happen. Deborah Lucas eyes flooded with tears watching the water rise around and inside her home.
Lucas lives near the Spring Valley Bridge an area where high water is no stranger. A recent flood project built to prevent this has failed. They worked on it all summer long, it was supposed to fix it. This is worse. 15 to 20 homes were evacuated and some people were trapped on their porches and others rescued by boat. Emergency workers helped out a physically challenged lady and saved her wheelchair from high water.
Ricky Phillips says, “I‘ve lived here since I was 3 years old and have never seen it like this.”
Down the road, Sunshine Freewill Baptist got hit again with a flood. The force of the water even broke down the door. Motorists had to deal with water covered roads and others tried to unclog debris from fences after the Spring Valley flash flood.
