UPDATE: Homeowner Shoots Break-in Suspect in Head, Deputies Say
After catching a suspect breaking into his garage, deputies say a Gallia County man took the law into his own hands.

UPDATE at 6 p.m.

GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ)--Taking the law into your own hands. That's what a local homeowner did when he caught a thief breaking into his storage shed. Armed with his shotgun, one shot was all it took and the burglary came to an abrupt end.

“I woke up and heard the alarm and came out at 3:30 in the morning,” Ivan Hurt said.

Hurt lives alone in rural northern Gallia County. He has a shed full of equipment he values and fiercely protects it. That's why when two men broke into the building early Friday morning, Ivan was ready.

“I saw him come, and he turned like this and he had a flashlight in one hand and something else in the other, so I shot,” Hurt said.

Mr. Hurt wasted no time, he was barely out of his house when he pulled the trigger from more than 30 yards away.

“You see this spray pattern. That’s what happens when you shoot from so far away. I didn’t want to kill anyone, and it still makes me sick that I even had to wound someone. I’ve been robbed before and that’s when I installed an alarm so I could be ready,” Hurt said.

“There are a lot of thefts because people are stealing to get their drugs,” said Gallia County Sheriff David Martin.

Martin said thefts are up nationally and that includes Gallia County. He said residents are tired of it and they're not going to take it anymore.

“The law protects you if you feel there is imminent danger to you or family members,” said Gallia County Prosecutor Jeff Adkins.

And if there's any doubt about what the man was up to, Hurt said he left an incriminating piece of evidence behind.

“This is a mask he was wearing, and you can even see the blood from where he was hit,” said Hurt.

Ronald J. Johnson was the suspect and shooting victim. He was in fair condition Friday evening at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington. The second suspect got away. Police are still searching for him. Both men will face charges.

There was no word on whether Hurt will be charged with anything. Prosecutors will decide whether he acted negligently or in self defense.

GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- After catching a suspect breaking into his garage, deputies say a Gallia County man took the law into his own hands.

The Gallia County Sheriff's Department says a homeowner in Raccoon Township, which is in the northern part of Gallia County near Rio Grande, shot a man in the head.

Investigators say the shooting victim is 28-year old Ronald J. Johnson of Vinton in Gallia County. He is listed in fair condtion at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington.

Deputies say the homeowner is 63-year-old Ivan Hurt.

According to deputies, around 3 a.m. Friday morning, Hurt heard someone rustling around in his garage, so he grabbed his shotgun and went out to investigate.

After deputies say he shot Johnson, another suspect got away. Sheriff's deputies are still searching for that second man.

I do believe that if someone breaks into your home, you have the right to protect yourself and your family, afterall, the broke in! If they get arrested, they get slapped on the hands and turned loose to only do it again, but if they get shot, they may think twice before they steal again!!!

If you have never been robbed before, you will never know the fear that runs through your body. You have one thing in mind and that is to PROTECT your family. You know that, the intruder is up to no good and you don't know how far they will go. Your body reacts to that fear. What if this man did not shot and the robber killed him?????? WOULD THAT BE OK???? NO. WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTECT OURSELF.

People were always gossiping about the evil things he did especially on the Sabbeth. I remember that when people talk about me. Jesus also didn't hesitate to break a rule or a law once in a while to do something good. I smile and think of him when I do it too. Jesus had more than a few enemies. It is just not health reform in those papers. 500 facts LISTED in that "book" should be a cake walk for you, since you are so fimilar with it to want it to go through and no one in Washington seems to be. The abortion issue is just one amoungst thousands of issues. No average civilian seems to know much about it, we are watching the media and listening to the "Big Dogs" in Washington bicker back and forth. Yet the US has higher death rate for children under the age of 5 than western European countries with universal health care so is it right to stop abortion just to let kids die for lack of health care,seems to me as if we were against killing unborn babies then we would do something to make sure those kids when born would live longer than 5 yrs.

I first noticed him peering through the vegtables at people, then I saw him walking frantic through the store in circles. At first it freaked me out, then I realized what he was doing. Why in the world would they hire such a strange person. Well one night I was in there with my children and he approach me and started to strike up a conversation, he asked me why I was in the store so much, at this point I knew he was trying to scare me from coming back or shopping there as much, it really made me upset, because the bulk of my shopping is done there. Most countries health cares administration fees equal 5% the US is 11% why.Have you read the final plan if so tell me what part you dont like.Chances are if you work you will be covered thru work and we all know that ones who dont work are already covered thru one program or another that we already pay for thru taxes but the people who work and cant afford care right now are the ones that needs the help they are getting

What happens if you dont pay the IRS? They come after you, so why would this government agency be any different than the next. Bottom line is insurance companies are in it to make a profit, so decisions are made for that purpose. If your employer said they may or may not pay you this week would you keep working? Everyone in America can get health care, but just like anything else you have to pay for it.

Too many people have lost their job and are facing foreclosure on their homes. Lets keep jobs in the USA. A friend of mine who worked for AT&T lost his job because At & T laid off American workers and hired workers from India. Is this fair? I don't think so.

I learned the hard way that they aren't. I had to rush my dog to the Pet ER at 2AM after applying the liquid. The medication had entered her nervous system, causing her to lose muscle control. I now only purchased Vet approved flea control medication. The higher cost is worth the peace of mind. I am happy to hear the medication will be more closely regulated. To some of us, our pets are like our children.

But these workers have to be there, night after night, breathing the smoke from possibly a thousand cigs a night, whether they are smokers or not. Paying the price for your freedom. Some may not even stop to think about how that is harming them as they work. When will people understand that they are not the center of the universe? Take your smoking outside where it harms only you as you are the ones choosing it. Stop believing we have the right to force others to breathe it. It use to be the in thing to smoke, so many young people tried it. If they now see they will be isolated, many will not choose it.

She is trying to blame our fire dept and police dept for the problems in Portsmouth, while she gives herself a raise and remodeled her office. She forgot to mention that there is asbestos and mold so bad in the police station that officers are in as much danger in the building as they are fighting crime. She also forgot to mention that the fire department works their tails off to protect our city, and do not make great money, but do it with amazing passion. Before she blames these men and women, she needs to take a look at herself. Unfortunately, when their bodies cannot be saved, and they have to be "put to sleep", some kindness would be greatly appreciated. I have noticed the people who call names the most on here and impugn other folks intelligence are often the worst spellers, can't put a sentence together, often can't carry a coherent thought to completion, etc..but I often say "corpseman" now when talking about those folks in the Navy, just as a tribute mind you, no disrespect intended. I am going to study geography now, my family is planning a vacation to one of our 57 states, we just haven't decided which one, we just have to remember and take our asthma "inhilators" along so we don't get winded.
