CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Sen. Barack Obama made history as the first African-American to be elected as president of the United States, and millions of Americans shared in his emotional win.
Obama scored a huge victory over Sen. John McCain Tuesday night, and his road to the White House is paving the way for local people to follow their dreams. He is giving African-Americans a new sense of pride in themselves and their country.
This excitement took center stage at some beauty salons and barber shops throughout Charleston. Many people recalled what it was like to witness a historic milestone.
"I was crying like a baby at the TV," said LaDawn Davis, a nail technician.
For some in the black community, a new day has come -- a world with endless possibilities. It also is changing how many see themselves.
"We can get beyond whatever we thought we couldn't," said Marvin Watson, who is a barber. "We couldn't get over the hump (before)."
Obama fared well in several traditionally Republican states in the election, including Ohio, Indiana and Virginia. He was unable, however, to turn West Virginia blue. McCain beat Obama here by double digits.
