HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – President-elect Barack Obama’s milestone accomplishment of becoming the first African-American president has resonated with people across the country.

Among them are Huntington residents Glenn Smith and Thomas Kincaid who shared painful memories of school segregation in the Huntington of the early 1960s, among others.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF HE IS WHITE, BLACK, AFRICAN-AMERICAN, OR ETC? YOU DON'T. THE BIBLE DOESN'T STATE WHAT COLOR HIS SKIN IS, SO YOU BETTER BE CAREFUL ABOUT BEING RACIST. HOW CAN YOU LOVE GOD, IF YOU DON'T LOVE WHO YOU DO SEE ON THIS EARTH? REMEMBER, WE SHALL KNOW YOU BY YOUR FRUITS. THIS IS AMERICA AND WE ALL NEED TO COME TOGETHER AS AMERICAN PEOPLE AND BACK OBAMA UP. RIGHT NOW IN THE UNITED STATES, THE RICH ONLY PAYS TAXES ON $90,000.00 AND NOTHING IF THEY MAKE MORE THAN THAT. UNDER OBAMA, THE RICH WILL PAY TAXES ON ALL MONEY THEY BRING IN NO MATTER THE AMOUNT, AND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THAT IS ONLY FAIR. Heres a guy that due to his past, (just his preacher and the terrorist buddy) couldn't pass an fbi background check to clean toilets at usec and we trust him to run our country. I didn't like any of the runners and I'm afraid there's gonna be a lot of disappointed people, one man can't fix this country, till everbody get's off their behinds and does their part it's goin in the toilet same as it has, your just gonna pay more taxes now.

First off, if you're from america, you are american! plain and simple, no white black yellow green tan orange, WHATEVER...you're american...however i know a family from africa, yes born and raised in africa and they came over here to live, LEGALLY. and they can call themselves african americans! who cares about race anymore except the media...no one...but to those who posted negative comments about the bible an God. well you'll get yours too. God does punish people. I feel that I believe how im supposed to believe and no matter what happens to this country God will take care of me. I'm white, and I love that Obama got president. I'm not old enough to vote yet, but whoever did vote for Obama, thank you. Thank you for voting for a change. Skin color doesn't matter, you could be black, purple, orange, blue, or whatever color. I wouldn't like you just because of your skin color. For everybody who says Obama was born in another country, for your information you have to be born in the United States of America to be the president of the United States. For all the people say that Obama is the antichrist, you don't even know Obama as a person now do you? No, you don't. You have to actually meet a person to know them. For all the people who say they are moving to a different country go on ahead, that just means more room in the country for me so I have more room to sit my butt down. Go on ahead move out of the greatest and richest country in the world. Also, if you believe in God, and against Obama, you don't know what God looks like, what if he's black?

I'm glad Obama got president. I was in the hospital, and my doctor came in and told me my insurance was up. Maybe Obama will make it possible to get hospital care if you have insurance or not.

It doesn't matter what color your skin you are. I'm glad Obama got president, because if McCain got president there would be another George Bush on our hands. I think Obama will be one of the best things that ever happened to this country. Just because his skin is darker than other people's doesn't give them the right to think they are better than him. Though Obama is a educated man. Mr. Kindcaid is as well. He is a excellent example in our community of what a knowledgable (by books & life experience) african black man consists of. He is one of the most kind hearted people I have met during my 15 years of residing in Huntington. Being born and raised in Logan County myself in the mid 70's know that there would have never been a chance for a African American male to hold a position on the level of Commandering Chief of the US. I am grateful that Mr. Kincaid as well as other seniors got to live to see this great victory for all people, because they are the ones who lived through the true struggles that allowed Obama to stand on the platform and exemplify that change that is now a visual reality and not just something that must be imagined. Thank you Mr. Kincaid and Mr. Glen "Snig" Smith also.

Some people posting here seem very offended that the President-Elect is being labeled as a "black" President-Elect. I did not notice any of you posting this qualification prior to the election. Seems that because Obama won, you believe you must claim that the "white" part of Obama is now our President-Elect. Gimme a break!! Some are so hung up on race that they couldn't even fathom a President being black. This is ridiculous. Don't try claiming Obama is white because he was elected. You weren't claiming him as "one of your own" prior to his winning. I am a white female and I voted for Obama because he was the best option. His being black was simply an additional positive for me. Some white people are very racist. I can only hope that your fear of black people diminishes with Obama's presidency. I sincerely hope his presidency will put us further down the road toward tolerance of different-colored people. Skin color means NOTHING.

I did not figure you would post my comments online. After all, you are an affiliate of NBC, and you don't want to anger the mother ship. NBC has made no secrets about wanting Obama to win. NBC clearly made a point to justify anything Obama said or did wrong, and was all to quick to condemn McCain for anything he said or did. I knew my comment this morning would not be posted, and I actually want to thank you for not posting it. You just helped my prove my point. God knows we don't want to offend or anger anyone. I think that you should tell your viewers that if they want truly fair and un-biased media coverage then they should turn to the FOX news channel, and turn off all this NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, and so forth. I wish the best for Obama and his family, I hope he does an excellent job, but I believe this country has just made one of the biggest mistakes in its relatively short history.

To Josh- I guess I am that one then because I voted for Obama based on his issues surrounding taxes, healthcare reform, and abortion. I don't care what color he is or isn't or who he does or doesn't look like. I think the South Park episode they most recently done was hilarious because they really pinpointed how ridiculous some radical McCain and Obama supporters were and are. I am the one who asked the question, not being a hatemonger as it seems some of you think. I just can't see how he is an African American any more than he is just an American. No one calls me a White American because I'm white. Why does race have to be an issue in this and white people aren't the ones who made it an issue. He ran on the premise that he was the first African American to be nominated. I just think it's wrong to use his race as either a positive or a negative. He's either the right PERSON or not. Who cares what color his skin is. And to the lady who said she has biracial children, you don't have to pick one, you can pick both caucasian and african decent. My sister has biracial children as well, and they are just that....BOTH not one or the other. They are growing up LOVING that they are both white and black. There is no need to be anything but AMERICAN....we're all the same inside.

Mr. obama is not an African American . Alot of people have been fooled . He is a person of mixed races . I voted for obama in ohio .I was supporting Mr. McCain until he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate & she just made me sick . She said it was gods will that we invaded iraq , and she was part of a religious congregation that tries to turn gay people into straight people and i decided right then and there she was psycho path and i could not vote for them . There are racist white people in Huntington just as there are racist black people in Huntington that i have encountered .I choose not to associate myself with either group . Alot of people are treated unfairly ; Blacks , Indians , Mexicans, Gays, Handicaps , women and so on . Until we resolve our differences and come together as Americans where as everyone is treated with respect and has equal civil rights and protection under the law we will never be a united states of america only a divide states of america

Why is it ok to lable folks as "white" and not ok to call others black, etc. This African-American, Asian-American, etc. thing is a bit ridiculous. If one chooses to live within the borders of the United States as a citizen, they are an American. Perhaps now with our having the first bi-racial President, caucasians can lose some of this guilt and break free of the PC BS that has all but crippled (handicapped, handicapabled, etc.) our free speech in this country.

To all of you who insist on saying President elect Obama is not black because is mom is white, must I remind you that there was a time (not so long ago) that if a person even had so much as one-tenth black blood running through their veins they were still considered "black" and as such were forced to suffer all the indignities and cruelties inflicted upon "full-blooded" black people. I might also add that I, for one, am so saddened to have read so many ugly, hateful, racist remarks being made on here. I believe in free speech and all that that entails, but are there really that many hatemongerers still out there? Have we not moved past that?

I also want to add that although I didn't vote for Obama, I will support him as he makes this transition. I opposed his views on abortion mostly and I was not happy at some of his past associatons. However, I cannot not support him now. He will be our president. We must see how he will make these changes. I am all for seeing what someone can do. He have a lot of work to do. We all do. The economy is in the tank and I do think that should be him first priority. People need jobs everywhere. I wish him all the luck in the world.

I also think we should all be called Americans. None of us can say we are not from someplace else. Yes, there are some Native Americans who can say that, but many of them are of mixed races now as well. Our ancestors came from many lands, many oppressed there and here because of discrimations from earlier Americans. The Irish, the Chinese, they all suffered hardship in America's history. We once elected an Irish-Catholic, so why not an African-American. We are all human beings, we all want the same love and respect from others. I do agree with anon. in the respect that I also heard the same interview. I don't think Obama will be able to take care of everyone's situation. People will have to understand that you will still have to work in order to get somewhere in this world. You cannot be handed everything on a silver platter without first helping yourselves. That is what is wrong with Americans today, they are afraid to work. Hard work is what made this country. Be proud all!

Because by all white people if you have the least bit of any other race in your blood that would make you a color other than white then you are that race! I have Bi-Racial kids, but no where on paper when you fill anything out for them about race is there a box that says Bi-Racial...it's a box that says Black/African American!

I really think alot of blacks will turn against Obama, I heard a inteview yesterday and a black lady said...Obama will take car of me, he will help me with my morgage and send my kid to Collage! I think alot of people black and white have this in there head. The US is broke where are we going to come up with the extra money to help EVERY lower call citizen with there house payment and a Collage fund? It cant be done! So I believe in the future they will turn against him.

It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!

I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.

  • Posted By: Chris: To Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here,your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: Pablo: Teachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.

  • Posted By: Ex-Officer: I agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.

  • Posted By: Robert: We the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
