Charleston User Fee

On Monday, the polls opened for voters in the City of Charleston. The special election was called to determine the fate of the city's $1 dollar a week user fee.

The mayor admits it might not be easy to get people out to the polls at a time when people aren't in election mode, but he's confident the fee will get the thumbs up from city residents.

Its money the mayor says you can see working, but give someone a dollar and they might tell you they want it in their pocket and not the cities.

The user fees biggest opponent, Thornton Cooper, says the same thing.

“He flips the burgers and has to pay the thing,” said Cooper. “The millionaire who lives in Charleston and works outside pays nothing, and that's not fair.”

It’s a small cost Mayor Danny Jones says is important, at a time when the numbers prove violent crime is down because of more police officers and more paved roads.

But the mayor says its money the city needs to keep the city thriving.
