Pioneer Days at Carter Caves

How excited do the kids of a diehard colonial re-enactors get about spending a hot summer week at a primitive pioneer camp and giving up their computers, video games and cell phones. Instead they spend their time spinning wool into yarn and toting water buckets.

Travis Gay says, “It makes you appreciate that stuff back home more.”

Tiffany Little, “I'm more addicted to spinning yarn than computers.”

Most of these young pioneers have been primitive camping since they were born and most think plenty of their peers could use a little low tech.

Rachael Hatfield says, “Kids are getting too snooty.”

But with 90 degree heat, there might be one high tech thing missed here.

Bob Miller, “We don't have air conditioning.”

Tiffany Little, “I’m in the shade. I don't need it.”

That’s why they tote and draw cold water and play cool soothing music at pioneer camp.

If right now you have the remote control in one hand, a computer mouse in the other and just set down at the Nintendo controller, maybe it's time to "tech down" a bit.

Maybe you need to get out and rough it like the pioneers; living low tech can be very therapeutic.

A variety of pioneer activities run through Saturday at Carter Caves State Park.
And all are welcome to join in the hands-on demonstrations. They're free.
