ASHLAND, KY (WSAZ) -- AK Steel announced today in a press release that it will temporarily idle its Ashland, Kentucky operations due to "the recent unanticipated and major downturn in the economy." The downturn has resulted in a lower demand for some of the company’s products.

The company says it plans to keep the facility closed until early to mid-January.

The blast furnaces will be maintained in “hot-idle” status which means the furnaces will keep going although they are not producing steel.

AK Steel services the automobile industry. The move will immediately impact 650 of the 700 union workers at the Ashland Works. Union leaders say the loss of work here will also hurt complementary businesses. The Greenup County Judge-Executive tells WSAZ.com Stein Flag Corporation has given notice of potential layoffs for workers there. Union leaders estimate this could affect at least 300 other jobs in the area.

The union says many questions remain here. Workers will either get unemployment or supplemental pay, which is the equivalent of between 50 and 80 percent of their base pay.

PRESS RELEASE: West Chester, OH, November 11, 2008—AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) announced today that it is temporarily idling its Mansfield, Ohio operations, and most of its Ashland, Kentucky operations, due to the recent unanticipated and major downturn in the economy, which has resulted in sharply lower demand for some of the company’s products. The company said that, based upon currently foreseeable market conditions, both facilities will remain idled until early- to mid-January.

AK Steel’s Mansfield Works currently employs 365 hourly and salaried men and women. The plant produces stainless flat-rolled steel which is used primarily to manufacture automotive exhaust systems. Steel production and shipping temporarily ceased at the Mansfield Works earlier this week. A small number of hourly and salaried employees will continue to maintain the operations in anticipation of a resumption of production when warranted by business conditions.

The Ashland Works produces carbon flat-rolled steel for automotive, appliance and other markets, and the plant currently employs 1,100 hourly and salaried men and women. However, about 275 of the Ashland Works employees work at the company’s coke plant, which will continue to operate, but at a reduced level. Ashland’s blast furnace, steelmaking, casting and coating operations will be idled later this month. As in Mansfield, a small number of hourly and salaried employees will continue to work maintaining the idled operations in preparation for a re-start. The company said Ashland’s blast furnace would be maintained in "hot-idle" status.

The company said it continues to evaluate all of its operations and administrative functions in light of the economic downturn, and will be prepared to adjust to continued rapidly changing conditions. That would include restarting the idled operations sooner if warranted by significantly improved business conditions.

"We remain hopeful that we will be able to return our dedicated and hard-working employees to their jobs as swiftly as possible," said James L. Wainscott, chairman, president and CEO. "Of course, that depends entirely on credit availability and consumer confidence, which are at the heart of this serious economic downturn."

Its going to get worse. I have a feeling that AK steel will not be reopening Ashland in Mid-January. It will probably be late 2009 if ever. It looks like the Auto makers will file Chapeter 11 which means that AK's buggest customer won't be needing any steel.

I am a single mother of two childern and I am lossing my job! But I do not work at Ak Steel! I work at one of the other bussnissus that are closing! You know its not right that people are willing to help just the ak workers! Value city, Lines and things and Steve and Bareys just to name a few places closing around the tri state area. Why isn't any one willing to help us and the others from there! Who cares about just the ak steel workers! There are many more people out there who need help paying the bills and trying to take care of the childern and many wount be having a Chirstmas or Thanksgiving! Look around the community and see how many other people are being effcted by the other jobs closing!! They need help too! People always say that communitys need to stick together and help each other in a time of need! Well not in this case! They mean JUST THE AK STEEL WORKERS!!!

just worked my last midnight. hey lets all just sit back with the family hold them tight and truly be thankful for all that we have. it will be nice eating thanksgivng with the family and not having to go out on evening turn afterwards. also it will be nice to be home all day christmas and not have to work evening turn. so there is a bright side if we don't focus on money alone. many people would be gracious to bring home 450.00 a week this holiday season. lets take a break for a few weeks and come back in january as better, wiser, stronger people with better families. happy holidays and go bucks..

Nothing wrong with salary or hourly. For most of the mill has great foreman NOW! You started with the disrespect on here! Look back a few posts, OH YEAH! So you got a burr up your hind -end because you didnt have enough time in for union representation so you are still bitter well get over it. People like you would be better off staying to the no-comment side these days before you step on your tongue again. And thanks for the support now.....So where are you "super engineer" employed at these days?

Posted by: Brian on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Ignore everthing I have posted..truth is I made some mistakes and im bitter, Sorry to waste your time.

Posted by: Brian on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:55 AM
And another thing. I respect everybody in the hourly work force that I worked with. I bent over backwards to let things slide that I shouldn't have because I didn't always beleive in the way the comapany was treating the men. Yes I signed up to be hourly. You know why, because when the contract was up in 2000 the company told me that If i didn't come into the plant and be locked in during the potential strike that I would be fired. I was originally in the union but the company said that I didn't have my time in. I tried to get the union to back me but the refused. I had no choice but to go salary because I had just moved back from Virgina. So before you go trashing me get your facts straight. I pray that everybody goes back to work.

Posted by: Hey Brian on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:08 PM
Now I see why you were laid off in 2003. It isn't the union's fault you didn't get paid overtime for what you worked. That was your stupidity. Guess all that suckn got you no where...

Brian, I am new to the company (less than 2 years service) and what Ive seen is a workforce who is very willing to work for you when you treat them like they should be with respect. I dont know your background but where I have worked in the past could have used some of these men. I am proud to stand by these men. Without them as a whole that plant would not run! And thats a solid fact. You cant pay for for knowledge and experience you have to ask.... Dont trash talk you make yourself look bad and would explain why your were cut with that attitude! Sounds like you had the cake job instead of them, I watched everyone in amasement last Fall when the real work was done. Everyone was pulling more than there weight. That furnace crew are some great men and women.

Posted by: Retbfman on Nov 17, 2008 at 09:06 PM
Hey Brian. Before you make the blast funace men look bad, you need to tell both sides of story. While maitnance was getting things ready the bf crew was waiting in the wings ready to get the job. Brute work done. Where were u when the heavy tueyer was coming out. Every body has a job at diffrent times not all can work in such cramped space at 1 time. We all help each other. Let's just all get through this tough time. Let's help each other not point fingers on who does what

To all of you people who are trashing the salary workers at AK, you don't know what your talking about. I used to work at the furnace as an engineer. All of the foreman work extremely hard (maintenance and operations.) We worked long hours and without getting paid the OT that the union guys get. At least at the furncace I would pressure test and fix leaks and help change blow pipes while some, not all, of the union guys just watched or would lay back in the lunch room. What are all of those union dues you paid getting you know. I should be mad at AK for laying me off in 2003, but I am not. I am thankful for the friends that I made while at the furnace. Those guys supported me through thick and thin. It was the best thing that ever happend to me. I am a better person and better engineer because of my experience at AK and the leadership of my boss Bill Thompson. I hope everything turns out for the best and the furncace starts up again but it is probably closed for good.

This idle shut down is stupidest thing i have ever heard of. my father works there and he works hard to help make a living nor our family. this shut down is going to hurt a lot of families. Thnks Alot!!!

Posted by: wife of hard working man on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:40 AM
I don't understand why it seems people are happy that hard working people are being laid off. My husband works hard for the money he makes. He is at AK Steel 70% of his life and his childrens. He doesn't make it to football, basketball, baseball, or softball games. Not to say all the parties he doesn't see, but in pictures. That is a sacrifice he makes to give his childern a good life. Instead of WINNIE about what you don't have try to find something better. All it takes is a pen!! Then you can get your own high horse.

Posted by: IBELIEVE on Nov 17, 2008 at 09:40 AM
My husband works at AK Steel. I Believe that God is in control and HE will work things out the way HE wants them worked out. We need to spend more time praying for our economy and the leaders at AK Steel, he's the only one that can do something about this mess. Blame is not helping anyone at this time!

Posted by: B on Nov 16, 2008 at 11:09 PM
It's very sad for me to hear the envy of some people on here. So what, the guys and gals at AK earned a decent wage!!! The hours they put in to earn it is ridiculous! My husband worked at least three 16 hour days every work week! We have four daughters to support and I was lucky enough to stay home with them because of this. The comments about $900 weekly unemployment is ridiculous!! True, we will make barely enough to keep us from getting wic for our newborn or food stamps to feed our family!! So unlike the lazy jealous bums that want to whine about how much AK employees make, these men and women worked their butts off and deserve every penny they get working or on employment! And despite what most of you may think, the majority of people working at AK are good people who would back their community in times like these instead of fuming with jealousy!! To all AK families, I wish you the best!!

Watch out Kyle you might make the company think I should do it there also.....You are giving me a good reputation thanks maybe I should be a politician instead of a Steelworker never knew I had such a great quality. You lost your job 1994 because Dick Wardrop (one of Bush's buddies) wanted to shut down Ashland Works because he hated Local 1865....This lay off is due to the current economic crisis===REFER TO ha on Nov 15, 2008 at 10:59 AM...maybe you can understand those terms....

Travis King, I should have known you would get on at AK. You were such a boot kisser at ACTC and I'm guessing you used that trait to get on at AK as well. I guess you learned one thing well at school after all.

To all of you blaming President Bush for layoffs at A.K. Steel. I lost my job at A.K. on 1/1/94 after 24 yrs.By your line of thinking I should blame President Clinton. Having hired in in 1968 I have been laided off under dems and reps. But I lost my job under a dem. But unlike lots of you I don't give presidents credit when things are good or blame him when it is bad .Please let me know if I should start blaming Bill Clinton>

Greenup, you don't know what you are talking about. First of all that is 60% total, that mean you take unemployment plus your sub pay and the total will equal 60%. It is not $900 a week and not even close if we are lucky we will make $500. That is what I'm talking about you need to understand before you start spreading rumors, and I'm not on some high horse I work hard and I support my family and last Christmas we supported another family of four so they could have a good Christmas. Thats what alot of people on hear don't understand I'm not the only person that works there that helps out others in need and this year that is not going to happen. So get all the facts before you submit a comment on hear

Posted by: rotten on Nov 15, 2008 at 09:10 PM
Who ever Wainscott is talking too is Tim Imes--I-me-s.Because Mike Hewlett would not give steelworkers jobs,so Mike Hewlett is not making deals with Wainscott, that is what Imes would do,so to our union brothers and sisters your job is safe you will not be part of a deal.

I worked for Ak for almost 5 years. These men work hard, put in forced hours of overtime, and are devoted to their jobs. I believe "Greenup" is a little ruffed over being forgotten, don't take it personally And as for "NOT A DEMOCRAT" post, I can honestly tell that YOU are completely blind. If you deliver to a company, then isn't this company (AK) making you money? And if you honestly think Obama will be worse than the worst president in history, your crazy. Either way, our country's economy is at the brink of disaster. Thanks to BUSH ECONOMICS AND NO REGULATION. For those Union workers who like to bash the union, Let me tell you to hold your tongue. If you think a NON union shop would offer you sub-pay, insurance, or a chance to even come back to work YOU ARE TOTALLY MISTAKEN. If you don't like the union, go work non-union then. It is people like you who make the union weak, they don't need you anyways. And if anyone want's to address my comment, provide your name, don't hide :)

We are very thankful for are jobs and union wages. I hope that Marathon stays strong and can keep everone working as with CSX, PCI, etc.!!! For anyone in this area or over the country to set back and imply that this is what people deserve is proof of ignorance. This is not AK problems or PCI problems this is our country and its backbone of industry falling around our feet. When Ironton Iron shut down those workers filtered into other industry in the area over time but there stress could be felt over every angle of our communtiy. This area cant afford another loss of that magnitude. And how can you people get on here and make comments about Unions and how they bring this on themselves. This area was built on Union wages and everyone has forgot the fight that was made for are working rights and the blood and tears that went to get them. We need to get over Rep. and Dem. issues and work together to fix are nation, area and future. Stop blaming and start fixing!!!!!!!! proud member of 1865!

Like Scott C. said stop hidding behind fake names. As for "Heather the accountant" why dont you enlighten all of us how to fix this economy and the nations problems. Since you are of "higher education". I make what your husband does, and I know this beacause I have a close friend in the same line of work at KDMC. So lets get off the exaggerated pay comments. Now I know that everyone does different with lifes priorities and expenses. For you information my wife is currently in school for the so called "fallback degree" that you refer to. We watch our money close and plan thats why she quit her job at AK for a career in the medical field. Now as for you that say we who choose foreign automobiles are to blame look where large amounts of AK's product go. I for one am not ashamed of supporting myself by purchasing Toyota products. As for who to blame for the economy, everyone is to an extent. Greed has drove this more than anything and past political decision on leadership and beliefs!!!!!!

For all of you who are praying for our families I thank you very much, Obama will bring us out of this. For those of you who are saying that our families our "Over paid" maybe all you 48 year olds still living with mommy and daddy maybe you should take a break from playing video games and chating on match.com and take a trip down to Ak Steel to find out what a "Hard Working American" really means. My Father is a Union Man For Ak Steel and he works his A** off to put clothes on our backs and food on our table, so just to let you know he earns every single penny he makes. so thank for you for your support. -Rottens Daughter Daddys A Steel Worker And A Dang good one!

TO SCOTT CONLEY : Maybe you need to go back and read my comment because I didn't say anything about what you guys make. And also I do have family that has worked there for many, many years and know what you guys make. But I chose not to talk about it. And what I said about the $900 a week is the truth and you know it. You guys are getting $500 a week sub pay on top of your $400 a week unemployment check and that equals $900. DUH!!! People like you need to come off your pedestal and quit acting like your better than everybody else and trying to make everything out to be jealousy, cause it's not. I've never tried to get a job at AK and don't want one. I could care less what you make because I want to spend some time with my family and not live at AK. (Especially with the mandatory overtime, on top of that them scheduling you on your only days off) SO SCOTT, PEOPLE like you need to get over yourself and stop being so conceited and making yourself believe everybody wants to be like you.

Ok, Let me put it this way....gas prices 3.99 a gallon = Big profits for oil companies (The Bush's and CHeney's)= "putting it to the auto industry"= no orders for steel= ak layoffs...I believe this is called "trickle down" economics of Bush . . .

It sounds to me like there are alot of people that are mad because you could not get a job at AK or pass the test for employment. That is not the hourly employees fault. There are alot of people that that will be out of work and this is going to effect every business in the area one way or another. If you want your voice heard grow a pair and quit hidding behind your fake name and be a man not a coward. On another note, I'm with Rotten, Thanks to all of our Union Officals and membership. It's sad to see all these AK workers crying over having to live off of at least $900 per week. (For all of you that don't know, these people can get their unemployment checks untaxed) I'm laid off myself from Pregis. All of us that are laid off are making it on just the unemployment. It's also sad to see that the Steelworkers seemed to have forgotten about us. Ever since the big breaking news about AK layoffs, all you ever hear is how the community needs to make sure these people are fed and make sure their children have a good Christmas, and BLAH BLAH BLAH They don't care about all the families from the other local plants that are laid off. Only because they are worried that the AK families are not going to be spending as much money now for the holidays. Just remember, AK families aren't the only ones having a tough time. How many children never have as good a Christmas as we do? There are many parents that are sick and can't work, or don't have the education to have a good paying job

As a child I have seen Armco lay my dad off 2x and never be called back with 18 1/2 yrs. Now as a 32 yr old woman, wife and mother of 4, I am seeing my husband laid off. Did I ever think I would be in my parents shoes. NO! But here I am. I am a stronger person today because of it. My family taught me that FAMILY is what is important and as long as we have each other and our prayers we WILL make it. I remember my dad rolling coins to pay for my prom dress, charging my college education and holding his head up high. AND that is what my family will do and we WILL make it. Hopefully this won't last but if it does we will get through it and be STRONGER people. Everyone needs to remember that NO JOB is secure. God deals us what we can handle and my family and other AK familes will get through this. I will pray for all of us and even for the corporate AK people that they will make the right choices to call us back to work. Everyone needs to be thankful and not judgemental.

Posted by: Sarah on Nov 14, 2008 at 08:29 PM
A few of the comments below do not seem clear to me. Our country is going through a tough time right now and the AK layoffs is a result of that. Just like everyone else in this country that is employed, these people work for one reason - to provide for themselves and their families. With 600 being laid off, this will have a major impact on the area; meaning that 600 families that normally contribute to the local economy by shopping and dining, will now be able to do so on a limited basis, if not at all. Those workers may not have a job either if the economy doesn't get a boost. So for those of you who have jobs be thankful and be careful of the words chosen to express your concerns because the things that you say about the ones that are laid off today, could be saying the same things about you tomorrow. We need to extend our support not only to our families and friends but to our country and to our new president.

I am a wife to an Ak worker and I know about the sacrifice all these workers make. I pity all of you that are making the negative comments. You should be ashamed and remember 'what goes around comes around' so watch what you say! I am praying for all the families and I know that GOD will take care of all of us. It will be hard for some, but thankfully my husband has saved for times such as this and we are prepared. We don't have a high dollar home or high doller vehicles. I drive a 4 year old suv and he drives an 8 year old truck. We have never tried to compete with the Jones' or lived above our means. I have been married to my husband for 3 years now and have never got to spend a full day of Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years with him but I will this year. He has made many sacrifices over the 8 years he has been with AK but he does it for his family. I pity all you who don't know what a real job is and what hard work is all about. AK families you are in our prayers.

Both my grandfather and father worked for AK Steel for a VERY long time. My dad was injured on the job, and it took a very long time for Ak to take care of him....but they did. My point is, I know what it is like when the layoffs occur, and I will be keeping all the employees and families in my prayers. Ignore the negative comments about your possessions and hourly wages, because that isn't what this is about. God be with you all and have a safe a wonderful holiday season!

I worked 30 years in Weirton Steel in the northern panhandle. My company went bankrupt and took all of the benefits from the retirees and sent our pensions to the PBGC. "Corporate Greed" was the culprit in our case, the CEO's preach economics and current market demand, but when was the last time you saw a CEO give up their bonus or Golden Parachute because of the economy or market allowing men and women to keep their jobs? If we paid CEO's based on profitability and increasing the business viability they would probably make just above minimum wage. But without the working class to do their bidding they could not achieve a thing. So, to all of the men and women that have been laid off or lost their jobs I feel your pain and I truly wish you all good blessings in finding stable employment. To the CEO's Do a lot of praying this holiday season and maybe you will find the knowledge and the heart to give up some benefits so people can work and be prosperous.

I wouldn't start whining about Big Oil if I were you, BlameWho? on Nov 13, 2008 at 04:49 PM. We don't have much else left around here now. What will happen if Marathon packs up and leaves town as well? Big Oil has paid for my special needs child to have therapy and medical care as well as put food on our table and enabled us to pay our taxes and contribute a little to charity. We don't live in a big, fancy house or drive a Jag. The overwhelming majority of the people that work for Big Oil are working class people who give most of their time to the company just like the workers at AK. It is shameful that this has been turned into a partisan issue when it is simply a human issue concerning our friends and neighbors, regardless of political affiliation. Good luck to everyone.

My late husband was a UNION man. The union took a big chunk of his pay for dues. For what? When he was hurt on the job, and unable to work, Union did not pay my utilities, food, or living expenses. And seven years later, I am still fighting for the money he personally paid into a retirement. Funny, how the company can lose those records. I would tell the people at AK, educate yourselves in a high demand field.

i would like to say to everyone praying for us ak workers is greatly appreciated. also i would like to say to those who call us union workers whinny and uneducated that is for from the truth. i am very well educated as are many of my coworkers.however i am not commenting to run anyone down. if i were it would be the salary ppl and i just might give u the truth about them. however this is going to be difficult for many families not only ak employees but also the bus we spend our earned money at. yes we do make a good living and that is thanks to our union. if had not been for unions ppl who work under the conditions we do would not make the wages we do, nor would the salary ppl or anyone else in working america. so to those of you who had evil things to say about us plz refrain as we are human like anyone else and we have families who rely on our income to feed them clothe them and keep them a place to sleep at night that is safe.

i just want to say i am blown away from some of the stuff people have said to and about these people and there families, they did nothing wrong, none of this was there fault, this could happen to any one of us, and it might just come back around to the ones who have no heart and feelings of what these people are going through right now, if you think that way about this situation the best thing for you to do is keep it to your self, if thats what makes you feel good about yourself. and to every single family and people in your family that this has affected, be strong, ignore these people and have faith, god will take care of you, and god bless!

Wow, I read every post on here and I'm at a loss for words. Heather and others need to understand that not everyone can get an "education" and misfortune can come to anyone at anytime (including her). Folks should try and take the high road on this subject. This is not the time to give your two sense (joke) for/against Unions. This is a time to reach out and encourage those who have lost their livelihoods; to use every tool available to them to overcome this unfortunate situation. Call upon friends and family, take that hand up from the gov't or your local church. Sit down and make out a plan of attack. Update your resume and post it on web sites like Monster.com & Careerbuilder.com; they have tens of thousands of job opportunities around the Country and yes, around the World. Don't be afraid to seek employment outside of the tri-state area....I did years ago and have no regrets! As one door closes others will open so long as you are looking for them. God Bless & keep the faith!

How can some of you people complain about "The Union" when we are living in a country where Big Oil can make $14.8 billion profit in one quarter and some companies are paying CEOs millions of dollars to drive them into bankruptcy. And now we the working men/women are called upon to bail them out with our tax dollar. I would venture to say that there is not one union worker making $40 mill plus a year let alone $14.8 billion in three months. I'm not saying Unions are flawless, but they could never compare to the greed of big business. I wonder what the CEO of GM makes comparied to the CEO of Nissan?

I was reading the headlines and found the comments listed under the AK story. My son works at AK steel and yes he makes a good salary. But to those of you who thinks he stands around waiting on a light bulb to be changed by someone else, you don't know my son. He was taught if he had a job to do to do it well. He does not stand around just to collect a pay check. He has been laid off different times at different jobs and to those of you who are afraid you will have to pick up his slack when he goes to the welfare line, don't fear. He goes looking for a job. He has never drawn out completely his workers comp and hopefully he won't this time either.

I want to know if any of the people who have made the rude and hurtful comments have ever worked swing shift. If not let me educate you. My husband has been at AK for the last five years and he works 7 days of evening turn, 7 days of day turn and then 7 days of midnight turn. If he is lucky he will get 2 days off in those turns. After his last midnight turn he gets what everybody calls a long weekend which lasts from thursday morning & ends when he goes in on tuesday evening turn. There has been many times that my husband has worked midnight to day turn. Worked day turn & then had to go back in on midnight turn & has worked numerous days straight without a day off. I haven't mentioned that we can not plan anything 2 days ahead of schedule because if we do then in most cases we either have to reschedule or I have to go on with whatever plans we had. For example our kids birthday parties, Christmas mornings & Thanksgiving dinners. So the extra money they make is nothing in comparison.

I work at AK Steel and am very blessed to have this job. AK does not OWE any of us ANYTHING we went to them for a job they didn't search for us. NOBODY has a PROMISE of tommorrow. We have to take one day at a time and pray to GOD that our economy turns around. But come on people they HAVE to help ot the auto industry as well as they shall its just a matter of when!! As a community we should stand together..I don't feel hard toward a doctor because they earn more than me, I say more power to you. Fellow co-wokers stand tuff we will make it through this. Its bad ALL OVER not just AK . No one should base their lives on OVERTIME PAY for we KNEW it would END SOMEDAY...Soo that day is here tighten the reins REMEMBER YOUR NEEDS not your WANTS it makes me ashamed for fellow workers and families to write of such hardships when MANY PEOPLE would LOVE to get paid what we will draw while we are OFF!!

I was reading comments and I wanted to remark on the poster that was concerned about Toyota. I have family that works there and they are hurting just as bad as everyone else. The plant in Indiana they referenced was shut down. The large SUVs they make are no longer being produced, they have laid off ALL temporary employees and have consolidated MANY departments causing many to lose jobs. They no longer work overtime and they have cut their production numbers drastically. I feel bad for all AK workers and their families, it will be a rough christmas for all. Unfortunately everyone will feel the direct effect of this horrible economy, THANK YOU GEORGE BUSH.. Now is the time to pull together and help each other out. Lets keep each other in our prayers. God will take care of what we need. He will not put us through what He knows we cannot get through. God bless everyone.

I have sat here for the past hour reading everyones comments, it is really sad that in our small tristate area that everyone would rather point fingers than to pull together and help one another make it through. My husband is sick and we have been living on sick pay since Sept. which is half of unemployment, somehow someway we are managing to make it, we have 3 children who are very understanding. And the ones who have mentioned that we all should save for a rainy day, that is not always easy to do when you have 3 kids, bills, house, medical bills. And believe me I don't have 50 pairs of jeans and new shoes. We live as simple as possible even when he was working and times are just hard. I promise if you have faith it will find a way of working out. My dad works at the mill and my husbands cousin and many good friends, it is effecting everyone no mattter how hard or if you had a nest egg to fall back on. Good luck to all. And trust in GOd. Stay strong!

Let's just hope things in this area get better because it is going to be hard for us all just not AK Steel. I don't see it getting back where it was at this time this year. AK Steel employees need to come down to earth and find work somewhere else. Leaving the area is all there is left......

I agree with Local 1865, the Company always has the upper hand! This slow down is a result of the economy and sad to say but EVERYONE is feeling the effects of this. It makes me sick to hear ppl whining about union workers. Until you know the risks involved at these places you need to shut your mouths. If i had to work at a place that was high risk and where over 50% of its retirees died or had cancer i would expect a high salary too! Ppl need to be thankful for what they have and not go around comparing their lives to other people. GOOD GRIEF! Those guys have families and bills just like everyone else, and they work for what they have same as you and me. Ppl need to realize that unions are good, they protect you, they are your family. I know that if something happened at my work they would say good bye nice knowing ya. There would not be anyone there to protect me. That is a fact! Time will tell on this one i am afraid.

I am sad to see people lose their jobs but it was bound to happen. Too many people living "high on the hog" at the top and mismanaging finances that eventually falls back on the little guy. I deliver to AK Steel almost daily and I frankly thought it would shut down before now. I have never seen a plant in such physical disrepair. Seems that it hasn't had any upgrades in 50 years and basically looks like a pile of scrap metal at this point. It is one of the filthiest, and unhealthiest work environments I have ever seen not to mention the polution that it spews into the community. I can hardly stand to drive past there because of the horrible sulfer and other odors. Sure doesn't make me want to stop at McDonalds to eat! In the big picture there is more to come thanks to this wonderful election where so many blinded people put a man at the top that is going to bankrupt the government as well. Congratulations we now live in an "Obama-nation"!

My dad worked at AK and when it was Armco. He earned a comfortable living and struggled like everyone else at the holidays. It is called sacrifice. My dad managed to put two daughters through college, give us a good Christmas year after year, but there was not a lot left at the end of the paycheck. It is hard to do when cost rise every minute and paychecks disappear when you need them the most. Good luck AK workers. May we all find relief from this nightmare soon.

This is to J: Get a life. What is your deal? Did you lose a wife or girlfriend to a union man or what? Do you work or do we pay for your way of life? You evidently know very little about unions. Also, the union doesn't guarantee anybody's job. Union people are still being fired for various reasons and some for none at all. Without the union they would have no chance of returning to work. And we also are not thugs any more. Those would be on the corporate side now. The Company always has the upper hand.

I think people that don't know what they are talking about shouldn't comment. Right now we need possitive thinking not rude and stupid comments from jealous people. And that is all you are is jealous when you make the comments that you make. My husband works hard and long hours, and NO IT IS NOT VOLUNTEERING as someone had said. He does it because he wants to make sure that we are going to be ok and so that we can have things. We don't live a fancy life, but we both have worked hard to get everything that we have. We have had no help from anyone but us. People should thing about that old saying, if you dont have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. We will all be ok and things will work out somehow. To everything the is a purpose and a season. Our prayers are with those who are in charge of this situation as well as the state or our great nation.

To all the families: My husband has been at AK for almost two years. This is the fourth time since we have been married that he has been layed off. When he hired on at AK we were so thankful because we thought it would NEVER happen again. The last time he was laid off was two years ago, right before Christmas. We didn't know how we would make it through, but by the grace of God, somehow we did. At the time, I was working, and I ended up getting a Christmas bonus and we were out on the day before Christmas Eve buying our four children's Christmas presents. Now, I'm not working, so I'm sure that this will be more devastating than before. However, I know we will get through it, just as the rest of the families will. All these families need to stick together, and try to be positive. At least be thankful that your hubbys will be able to spend Christmas with you because I know a lot of them have not been able to in the past. All of the negative comments need to stop. It won't help a thing.

How we live, what kind of cars we drive, the clothes we wear is none of your business. Think of it this way, when your husband is home on Christmas morning watching his kids open gifts, or when he's at every ball game; mine is at the mill.....working to pay YOUR school taxes......$1500 last year and we live in OhIO!!! Not to mention 35% of his salary goes to uncle sam to pay for KY's outstanding welfare rate! These men and women earn every penny they get at AK and more.....they are in unimaginable heat in the summer, freezing cold in the winter. you need to quit being mean to people and sympathize a bit. Nobody wants to be laid off, we just want to take care of our families!

AK Steel previously paid Hritz $250,000 and Wardrop $650,000 of the almost $63 million combined total both are due. The bakehard material is so hard to run when you have certain inspectors working. I knew we were in big trouble when they took my golf cart from me last year.

Posted by: J on Nov 12, 2008 at 07:30 PM
I sympathize with the workers laid off, but you can thank your union. Artificially inflating wages and guaranteeing that no one loses their job no matter how lazy, unsafe or unproductive they are has bankrupted not only the steel industry, but also the auto industry. If your union is such an awesome group, let them task the risks and provide you a job. They were just thugs muscling in on money that wasn't theirs to begin with.

Now that we are over Tom the Twit. For those arguing about Union. Let me shed some light to the subject. Check the history: The Ex-CEO and the Ex-President of AKSteel (obviously not Union members), the Board had to pay them 30 million dollar EACH severance package by their contract. And you want to get on the little Union worker that is laid off? When the Board fired them they had to pay them 30 mil to be FIRED. The stock at that time was worth $2.00 a share; a few years later the stock shot up to 70.00 share on the sweat of the union workers and what you consider them being rich wages. Doesn't come close to the Corporate salary. Do your math for what 2 men recieved for 700 workers. GO JOE!!!!!!!!

I am an AK worker who drives a long commute to the plant everyday. There are alot of employees who have given up alot to keep this plant running. They have sacrificed friends, family, church, holidays and family events. You would think that a company of this magnitude would show some appreciation towards this group of individuals that have helped set and break there own world record mulitiple times. Especially, when there Middle Town Plant is still running. You will never find a better group of diversed workers anywhere in the United States that will work harder than the ones at Ashland Works.

TWENTY YEARS AGO THERE WERE PLANTS ALL UP AND DOWN THE RIVER, BUT THE UNIONS AND MEMBERS WERE SO GREEDY THEY HAD TO CLOSE BECAUSE OF LABOR COSTS. CRY ME A RIVER, IT COULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED AT A BETTER TIME. AT LEAST YOU HAD A TEN DAY NOTICE. SOUNDS LIKE YOU OVERPAID, WHINEY, UNGRATEFUL UNION MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE SAVED SOME OF THE MONEY THAT YOU WERE OVERPAID. YOU MAKE ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD AND CAN'T EVEN MAKE A QUALITY CAR. THE KOREANS MAKE BETTER CARS THAN YOU OVERPAID, WHINEY WORKERS. REMEMBER THE SAYING, WE MUST HAVE MADE IT ON FRIDAY. LOOKS LIKE ALL THE JUNK YOU BUILT WAS BUILT ON FRIDAY. GOOD LUCK FINDING A JOB THAT PAYS YOU WHAT YOUY DON'T DESERVE. HA HA. MERRY CHRISTma

I made the comments about Walmart, Taco Bell needing workers. If I were laid off, I sure wouldn't sit around and belly-ache about it. I'd go out and get some sort of job even if it meant Walmart, Taco Bell, or other retail job. $8.00/hr is better than $0.00/hr don't ya think?

OK, I really believe the ones that are whinning are the ones that don't get our charity for Christmas. My husband has worked there for years and we always gave to the poor. Now it is time to take care of each other. AK Steel will not do it and the UNION is out, my youngest is 21 and I am going thru the closets looking for games and clothes. If you have small children and need Christmas for them we need to figure out something, we need to show what AK workers and their families are made out of. Lets get this going to give the kids a Christmas and maybe we can show each other there is hope.

Yes, the employees of AK do live well, and I'm very thankful to have a job there. But let me remind everyone that we all work hard and we earn every dime we are paid. It sounds to me like the people who are complaining about AK employees and how we live are the people who are jealous of us and are probably on welfare. So instead of talking bad about us, you might want to wish we could get back so you can continue to draw your monthly check.

Blame this on Obama he is already messing things up. Just wait until he takes office. I don't blame any company for shutting its doors. I would be afraid of the future too! Thanks america for your screwed up vote! ! !

My husband works at AK and I would be willing to bet that he has had more education than you. As a matter of fact, as a business major in college, he looked into accounting and decided it would not provide much income in this area. I'm glad that you and your husband can handle it. However, to assume that these men are uneducation and imply they are less than you and your husband is a disgrace. My husband decided to work at AK not because we want to live lavishly, but because we want to pay our bills. I think as your second child comes into this world (I will be praying for its health) that you will realize the cost of one child vs the cost of 2 is a big difference. To those of you that said maybe these employees should consider their income before they had more children, I'm sure the majority did. What criteria should they consider in your eyes? I'm sure you might say their jobs/income, right? You make no sense. You couldn't afford to live either if you lost your job.

Although I have not cared much for AK since they forced my father to retire early years ago. I can't belive the comments made by people who care more about what people have then what they have to lose. So what if people worked hard or didn't work hard to get the nice things they have. I believe everyone tries to get the best for there family. What does education have to do with the jobs they have. These people were hired because they were capable of performing the work. Not all jobs require a education. In todays world its hard enough just to find people to show up for work everyday. The problems are not dem. or rep. All you have to do is read the comments where people don't care what is happening to other humans. They only care about if they have more than them. I wouldn't care if AK lost everything as long as the employees that made them all the money were taken care of.I hope things work out before christmas. Think of the children and the parents. Good Luck and God Bless

Todays Poll dont forget to vote-Yesterday, 62% of you said Congress should NOT help the struggling auto industry with financial assistance. Has your opinion changed in the wake of the news of the layoffs at the local steel companies? Why would we help the Auto industry when more and more of their support plants like A/K and others are being closed or curtailed. The Federal Goverment needs to look at All the industries and stop the layoffs, How is Anyone going to afford to buy a new car when we are all on the street looking for work.Makes no sense to me.

Mike Hewlett President of local 1865, will do all he can do for members in this situation. It's time to gather and help each other through this difficult time.

I am the daughter of an AK employee, niece of an AK employee. I married an AK emlployee two months ago and my cousin for a company employed by AK all of these hard working men have families includding children. This layoff has had a serious effect on all four of them. Our family is a close amily that when times get hard we pull togeather to help each other out. Its going to be hard to do that this time since everyone seems to be in bad times. We are hoping that things will get better soon and they are able to open back up in January. I also hope that the this area is able to pull through this hard time. And to the ones making rude comments. My dad worked hard for 20 years as a truck driver being gone all the time and missing out on his childrens lives, being hired at AK was a blessing because he could finaly be able to tuck his kids into bed at night, but he still works very hard to make ends meet just because your an AK employee doesn't mean your filthy rich.

I am sick of people who think AK employees should have saved for a rainy day. Thats easier said than done. Before you speak take a look in the mirror are you so superior I wonder. AK employees work hard and long They deserve nice things. Jealousy serves no purpose. If you don't like it tough! These men and women are in for tough times just like anyone being laid off. Watch the news AK is not alone. As for the holidays we'll do what we can and enjoy being together. As for the union get your story straight. I know for a fact the union officers have been working hard for everyone. If you have questions go to the hall and ask quit listening to rumors. Ignorance is bliss!!As for Ak they have no controll over the economy. We will survive this....

To AK degas wife: Who did your husband work for? I don't think its AK. AK hasn't laid off anybody at the Ashland Works yet. Does he work for fesseco or vesuvius? To Heather: Your math leaves one major thing out: The 90,000 dollar figure is achieved by working alot more than 40 hrs. a week. It's more like 56 or even 64. Do the math then and you will see an average per hour rate of around $31.00. That is an average. You have to figure overtime is anything over 8 hrs. in one day and/or more than 40 hrs. per week.

to Heather--my husband makes 79900 gross income for the year and is not allowed overtime.. HOWEVER bring home is alot less. by sept. they had already taken out over 20,000 in taxes. And i know from exper. with Ironton Iron that the more overtime you work the more taxes get taken out..So the taxes AK workers are paying some way or another trickle down to pay your husbands salary in part. And for the comment about getting an ed. I honestly don't think you have taken a look at tuition prices or books lately

Posted by: chad on Nov 12, 2008 at 03:04 PM
to heather. i agree people these days do tend to live beyond their means. however in your caculation you are only considering straight time. These guys and gals much like where i work are putting in 20 and 30 hrs overtime a week if not more. so you cant calculate an hourly rate by your formula. most guys at ak make anywhere from $12/hr. to $23/hr with your most senior union members. also to the comment on if they werent union they might still have a job....if they were non union they would be working for about $7/hr. with no benefits. the union was voted in as a means of protection from unfare wages and benefits from greedy ceo's that wouldnt pay that if they didnt have to. i make $20/hr...not at ak steel... and make just enough to pay the bills....and i have nothing fancy... $50,000 home and truck thats 12 years old and a car thats 8 years old..a wife and a son. we live within our means and i have a good job till nov. 20 when i too get laid off and am barely making it.

TO THE AK WIFES: My prayers are with you and your families. I cant imagine the stress that you will endure in the weeks and months to come. To all of you beating up on them about worrying about Christmas, I believe these wives know that God will see them thru but the reality is that this will be a difficult thing to explain to their small children. Whether you like it or not, Christmas is a lot about gifts for toddlers and small children even if you try to instill the true meaning to them. They dont understand the concept of money and I would hate to think that anyone out there would want small children to be disappointed on Christmas morning. Again to the AK wives, I will not beat you down for legitimate concerns about and may God see you through. Let go and let God. From a WV wife and mom. God Bless!

I hope everyone effected will be able to find work hopefully close to home but seems things are hard all over the US.Folks there are only a couple of big employers in the area Ash land oil has left Armco shutting down whats next RR? Well I can tell ya one thing if the RR goes into idle we will all be fighting over a Nabisco nab. I to am very sorry for these families effected. Looks like some of that 700 billion could go to keeping places like this open or help DHL laying off everyone. How many foreclosures will this bring? Terrible days. If Obama wants to impress us he should make these jobs priority not wall street.

My husband has worked hard to get the job he has at AK and we consider it a blessing to have it. He and I BOTH are educated adults and work hard for what we have, and will continue to do so. To the people that have left such mean comments....how dare you! You don't know what it's like to work there, or to be married to someone that sometimes puts in 60 hours a week all while you work 40 hours a week yourself! As a matter of fact we have do have a very nice home, 2 new cars and vacation regulary BUT we both work very hard to have all of those things, and for your information we do not have credit card debit and we are not asking for a hand out! I look forward to have my husband home for the holidays, it will be a first since I have known him for us to wake up Christmas morning together. I am praying everyone and everything will be okay during this time. God dosen't give you anymore than you can handle and to all the families like us our there, we WILL make it through this!

I hate that the AK workers are going to be laid off. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of the families this will affect. I have an uncle and a brother in law that works at AK. They work hard for what they get paid. They have earned every dime that they have got. From working double shifts and overtime and holidays.I have seen my uncle come in from a 12 hour shift and sleep for a couple hours and go straight back to work. So for all of those rude and selfish people out there that are sterotyping the AK workers shame on you!!! Yes they may have earned a fairly nice living but so could you if you tried to.Everything that is happening in the world today is all fortold in the Bible, so we need to be careful and obey Gods commands.

For Heather: In a time when these poor working class people, like my brother, may possibly have to find a new job-maybe you should get out and get you some education starting with a nice healthy dose of reality. Regardless of how much he makes (which is way less than your uneducated guess of 37.00 an hour) he is still a human being with a wife and three children to support. So what? He deserves to be without a job because he is not as clueless and uneducated as you are on issues concerning the real world? I suppose he will possibly be needing a job sometime in the near future- you on the other hand need to get a life.
