HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Want to feel old? Middle school student Morgan Orr loves using her iPod for research.

"I thought it was pretty cool because we could actually use something like, that's not like a computer," she said. "It's more modern-day technology"

All the 6th graders at Enslow Middle School in Huntington have been given iPods as study tools. Teachers are in training every week after school to learn how to upload their own podcasts about their subjects.

Teacher Kim Westcott said, "Technology is the way everything's going. If we're not caught up with technology, well then I guess you've missed the boat."

Enslow Middle School is believed to be the only school in the state using iPods at that level. One of the administrators of the program is Terri White. She's also the school's art teacher.

"The trend is moving in a direction we can't stop," White said. "We just have to kind of go with the flow and use it to the best of our knowledge and capability to get the best result in the end."

I am a current 8th grader at Enslow Middlw School, and it is not right for people to leave comments on this like that. They have no reason to talk about us like that because our test scores are actually pretty good. And I think it is a good opportunity for the sixth graders now and the sixth graders to come, just because we do not get them doesn't mean we are not intelligent . Or because we did not go to the same Middle School that gave you a "good" education.

I think having iPod Touches are cool. It helps me and my friends find places and things we thought didn't even exist. You people that are making mean and rude comments need to respect the fact that iPod Touches are learning tools. iPod Touches are the most fun learning tools ever. iPod Touches costed $200 each and was worth every penny so appreciate the fact that someone has made iPod Touches are learning tools so start writing nice comments about iPod's. Dear Mr. Maiden of metal, whats the difference between learning through a textbook and learning through an i-touch? I know! The i-touches are faster! Also, what does the i-touch have anything to do with running up the phone bill?!?! I do believe you should know what your talking about before you open your mouth! I am in the eighth grade and I think I know what I am talking about more than you do. Also, if I didn't know how to read i wouldn't have been able to read your ridiculous comment. Sincerely, A fourteen year old.

Posted by: everybody on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:34 PM
why dont they let the rest of the school like maby 7t and 8th graders have them too!

Posted by: Carrie on Nov 19, 2008 at 07:08 PM
Its me again......After i read the comments i realized that not 1 of those comments was from a seventh or eighth grader...they are all from sixth graders! In my spanish class we dont even have frickin books....i got into the class by hard work, studying, and coming to sdhool! And all i get is a class that can't even offer me a frickin book????That is crazzy!!!And then the little sixth graders come in and they get special treatment!!!NO! these ipods r a joke and they need to figure out the require things before the desires! Jeeez ticked off student of enslow!!!

Posted by: frank on Nov 19, 2008 at 07:06 PM
I don't konw who is trying so hard to be negative about us at enslow but instead of nagging and nagging why don't you cime and observe what the students at Enslow are capable of.

Posted by: Carrie on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:51 PM
i am a current student at enslow and i think that it is really stupid. If they can't give them to the whole school then don't give them out at all. I am in a class for spanish at Enslow on a high school level it counts for a high school credit! Right now I don't even have a spanish book i have printed papers from the book. In fact the majority of my doesn't have a book. If they can't take the time to buy kids that have a talent that they arent credited for to buy them books then how are they supposed to buy little sixth grader frickin ipods????No! Me and my fellow students WILL do something about this!

Posted by: Maiden of Metal on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Teach the children to read. Teach the kids grammar and literacy through simplest techniques; aka, TEXTBOOKS! These kids aren't even old enough to have cell phones yet. You're only teaching them to run up the phone bill w/ text messages if you ask me.

No wonder WV does so poorly compared to national education, it is clear here that so many people have contempt for education and technology. To the students of Enslow>> "Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." -Walt Disney

Is anyone else concerned that the majority of posts on this story are arguments between 6th graders and adults? Yet, I challenge anyone decipher which group has the weakest grasp of the English language and basic rules of grammar.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:07 AM
Ricky Bobby, if you had an iTouch you would have been able to use a dictionary to spell DECISION correctly.

Posted by: Tim on Nov 19, 2008 at 08:46 AM
I think the use of the iPods is a great idea! Its preparing our children for the future. We live in a digital age where everything in every field you work in uses the internet or an intranet (an internal network) in some sort of way. To the kids of Enslow: Ignore the adults that are putting you down...if you read the comments on every story on this site you will see there are negative comments about anything and everything....if there is a story about a someone saving a dogs life, you would see 20 negative comments to go with it....So just ignore the negative people :)

Posted by: Billy Bob on Nov 19, 2008 at 08:03 AM
Hey I would like to say you adults as the history teacher below said do not know what you are talking about you need to listen and assume stuff abouty Enslow. Don't you people have anything else to do than post these stupid comments about Enslow. GO DO SOMETHING ELSE YOU HATERS!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Stephanie on Nov 19, 2008 at 08:00 AM
I do think that the I-touches are great technology for the sixth graders to learn to use. Why do you people think that because we get this technology, we will not succeed in life. Enslow is a wonderful school where we have many opportunities to use wonderful technology, you don't have to put us down like this. I would greatly appreciate if you did not put down my school, teachers, or friends. It is obvious that you are just jealous of the higher level of education we recieve here at Enslow because you did not have the ability to learn using this technology while you were in school. We all would appreciate it if you would not say that we will not succeed in life when most of us here will get a better job making more money than you. Please think how it feels to be told you will not succeed before you say that about us.

In life there are two types of people. There are those that have speed bumps in life. To them, they are mountains that are insurmountable and they can only describe them as mountains that challenge their very existence. Then there are those that really have true mountains to climb in life. These mountains are steep and seem to reach to the sky. Among the mountain climbers there are those that look down from the top and see the beauty as they survey from the top and examine the rough road that they had to take to reach the splendor at the top. My teaching career has been short, but in my short time here at Enslow I have seen students, children mind you, that has climbed more mountains than many adults. These children face challenges on a day-to-day basis that are more than most adults face in their everyday life. My hats are off to you, my students; your courage will one day make you achieve great things. Never let those who can not see the mountains you have climbed already put down your successes.

I would first off like to say that I as well do not appreciate the comments about our students not being able to make something of their lives. They are children and obviously you do not remember being a child and receiving something that makes you happy. I also want to point out to my students, please do make sure you do not use texting while responding to these "adults" who find it easier to put you down rather than build you up. This feeds into their stereotype of our school because it does make us look as if we do not use correct grammar. This school is not an easy school to teach in by any stretch of the imagination but if you were brave enough to come into our school you would see there is much potential here. Also, maybe you grownups, and I use that term very loosely, if you would have paid attention and read or even listened to the story would know that they were paid for with a grant and not board money. Heres a thought, instead of putting down, why not come volunteer.

by technical definition it is an "iPod" as declared by Apple http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/ Also I think it is great that schools are allowing students to use this technology in the classroom. I am a college student and also use this to double-check the professor in class or for homework help.

Dear Enslowers, Do not be disheartened by the meanies whom comment on this fine webpage. If you read the other articles, you will find hours of entertaining posts from people who just complain for the sake of complaining. I come to wsaz.com for my news, but I stay to see what crazy reasons people will have to complain about something as simple as an obituary. The people that say you shouldn't have I-Touches also think social workers deserve to die because they go into homes to help kids. You kids will learn a lot about good citizenship if you keep reading the comments here on wsaz.com p.s. TIM IRR RULES!!

I'm glad that our school can afford iPods. It is also great that we can venture into futher technology. Let me say that I am not in the sixth grade. Our school doesn't even have Spanish books. So we should use this money or "grant" for something like books or something to futher your education. I do understand how the iPods are helping the sixth graders. But then again it's unfair that not everyone gets them and that we need the money for more important things. I could argue for this and against it. So I'm on both sides. I just think if they are going to give them then everyone should get them.

Posted by: To Kati Murphy on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:33 PM
Don't listen to these comments. Most are just people who probably stay on the computer all day and have no job. Seems to me you are already succeeding more in life than some of them. Your grammar should be proof of that. I think it is a great idea, and hope more schools do it.

hi my name is dalton and im 9 years old my sis goes to enslow and from what i can see this helps her put alot at school! If you keep putting these kids down like this, than maybe they actualy will not succede you should be boosting these kids up not pulling them down!they r great in my opinion!!HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Posted by: Natasha on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:23 PM
Well, My name is Natasha.Im a sixth grader at Enslow Middle and I do not appreciate the comment that we will not succeed in life! When I get older I want to be an archeologist! I think that I and many of other sixth grade students will succeed in life. My aunt and I were reading the comments on this site and she said that is was rediculous that now even parents were putting kids my age down! Well, in my opinion i pods are great for learning and I think that all schools should have the abillity to have these tools of learning. We only use these devices for educational purposes. They do not allow us to access sites like youtube or myspace. The servers block us from innapropriate sites. We also are not allowed to download music on our i pods. My dad says anything that helps me learn faster is a useful tool in his opinion! Now if you don't mind I have a 4.0 average and you say that I will not succeed in life? Well, I guess that I will let you pump my gas one day! I don't mind at all!HA

This should make Bil Murray feel old... It's not an IPod... It's and ITouch!!!

Apparently I should have included reading comprehension in my comment.

Posted by: Kati Murphy on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:47 PM
It really makes me angry about how all of you are saying how we won't succeed in life. I am an 8th grader at Enslow Middle, and I think it's so awesome that they are even giving us this opportunity. In my opinion, I do think it's a little unfair to just letting the 6th graders use them. However, not many schools get to do things like this. The teachers aren't being lazy about getting the 6th graders iPod touches. It's an extraordinary way of letting them have fun while learning. They embrace the fact that they get to use the iPod touches for that purpose. Most of the negative comments most likely came from people that have never even been in Enslow.

Posted by: P.J. on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:40 PM
im an 8th grader at enslow.im pretty mad about this.if your gonna give ipods to the litle kids that know almost nothing about electronics,at least give them to the older people that know how to handle electronics.

Posted by: Whitney Baker on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:19 PM
I am in the 8th grade at EMS. We may not have the best test scores or the newest building but that gives no one in the world reason to tell me or any of my fellow classmates that we wont amount to anything as we go on in life. I for one AM going to be something when I get older. I am going to be a Neo-Natel nurse. So you can have your own opinion but it is not our fault that our School board chose to give the sixth graders ipods. That is their choice and we cant change that.

Posted by: Lisa on Nov 18, 2008 at 05:31 PM
I think it is important to state that these IPods are NOT used to play games, or download music, the students don't even take them home. They are only used as a supplement to the normal education. As to the mother who is home-schooling her children, good luck! I don't think they will make it past the first set of testing required for home-schooled children by the look of your grammar and language skills. Try a Word program they have a grammar check and a spell check, or is that too much technology? I think it is great that technology is being implemented in the classroom. Go to a major universities like Duke, Harvard, Cambridge, or Stanford, you can't get through a class without some form of technology. This isn't for after the class homework, this is IN CLASS based technology. These students are going to do well with their knowledge and skills they are learning today!!! Good job Teachers!! From someone who isn't a student at EMS or a teacher!

Posted by: Kim on Nov 18, 2008 at 04:58 PM
to parent on Nov 18TH and $ & Sense. To down grade children and say they will not succeed is degrading. Is this how you do your child?? Probabley so. For the the colledge student who can not make change at mickey d where was you momma. Don't blame the school for that. If the teacher get the blame for our kids failing what do us parents take credit for. Instead of supporting our school you will run to Ohioh with your problem.

Posted by: another teacher on Nov 18, 2008 at 04:30 PM
I think this is FANTASTIC!!! I quit keeping track of the number of times I reach for my laptop to look something up during my day - I can only imagine how great it would be during class to be able to tell my students to "google" something and be able to see it in action. Excellent work!!

Posted by: 6th grade student form enslow on Nov 18, 2008 at 04:24 PM
Hey why do you critisitize us were lucky for this and it was a grant from the school and we get alought of good things

Posted by: To $&Sense on Nov 18, 2008 at 03:43 PM
In response to $&Sense's comments about (Enslow) students not being able to read, write, or do simple math ... How on earth do you think they are able to get info from their I-touches if they were unable to read what they discovered? How do you think they respond with the required critical thinking skills if they were unable to write? Pictograms? Rebuses? I don't THINK so!!! These students are way ahead of the limits of only "basic education" and are working toward achieving mastery level learning. If you somehow missed the above newstory showing various teaching strategies being implemented, just spend a day or two, or even a few hours in one of these classrooms and see how much these kids can do already. Hey, you just might learn something new while you're here at Enslow!

Posted by: William on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:55 PM
I was just reading these mean comments on my I-Touch, hahahaha, jealous you haters.

Posted by: $&Sense on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:46 PM
We have college grads working at McDonalds that can not make change for the customer but we are giving 6th graders I-Pods. I'm not against teaching our children the usefulness of modern technology, but first they should be taught to read, write and do simple math problems. If you ask me, technology is only "dumbing down" our society if fundamental education isn't taught first.

Posted by: Teacher on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Wow! I really can't believe the negativity going on here! I mean, really, you think these students will not succeed in life?? And you think the teachers are being lazy for trying to get kids excited about learning?? Wow! People should be happy that these kids are excited to learn! I agree that technology can sometimes be scary, but it is the way things are going. I think it's great that EMS students will have a head start on devices such as iPods for educational purposes! Bravo to everyone who had a hand in helping EMS move further into the 21st century! Good luck to the students at EMS!

Posted by: brandi on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:31 PM
hey how would you like it if we came over to you school and started on all of your kids just because you had good technology. But we are better than that.

Dear "Parent", How dare you imply that my students will not amount to much! Not only that but, implying that the teachers of Enlsow are not providing a "proper education".Have you ever stepped foot into my school to meet my wonderful students of Enslow? I would venture to guess that you have not. The proper education is here at Enslow. Education given by highly qualified teachers. Education given to advance our students in the future. i.e. IPODS! By all means move to Ohio! I am saddened that you feel comfortable making statements, and generalizations about students you don't even know. To my students....Don't be discouraged by such comments as the one made here. When it comes right down to it you will be more qualified for jobs with the training you are getting here at Enslow. P.S. Thank you for making this the best school to teach in!!!!

Thank you so much, Bill Murray and WSAZ, for presenting in such a positive way Enslow's forward leap into 21st century learning by using this technology. We often hear and read about the negative things that sometimes happen in schools, but judging by the comments from the 6th graders and others, it is welcome news to see these students learning so much and actually being EXCITED about and proud of their school! When is the last time you heard about an entire grade of middle school students who look forward to coming to school every day? Enslow rocks! BTW, this is one of the obvious benefits of having a small neighborhood school where students can succeed by being nurtured and encouraged, and their individual talents are being recognized and rewarded, rather than becoming lost in some crowded classroom in an anonymous consolidated school.

Posted by: ChaosDragon on Nov 18, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Look, Parent, whoever you are, you're discriminating against the students here, and I don't like it. Anyone can be successful at life if they try hard enough. Think about this logically for a minute. If we were a hopeless case, would theyvreally be speending the money on us? I don't think so. DO YOU REALLY THINK WE ARE THAT STUPID???????

Posted by: Silly on Nov 18, 2008 at 10:29 AM
Why not pass out little blackberries for them too? That way the busy 6th grader on the go can respond to company emails at 4 a.m.

EMS is always a forerunner for technology and learning. This is exactly what ALL students need to be successful 21st Century learners. Kudos to those who wrote the grant and to those who are implementing it. Technology cannot be stopped, nor should it be. Having a faculty willing to stay in the technology game shows their dedication to teaching the students of Cabell County.

I am glad to say that I am a teacher at Enslow Middle School, a CCBOE Employee, a parent of a CC student, a taxpayer, and a full supporter of 21st century teaching and learning. Research supports using technology as an additional educational tool. We, in Huntington, WV should be thrilled that our own students have the opportunity to learn in such a high-tech, modern fashion, no matter in which school the project is taking place. The iPod approach to desktop internet research and learning is a fine example of grant money being used at it's best. Way to go Huntington, West Virginia! Leading the future in something other than obesity!!!!

Posted by: APL on Nov 18, 2008 at 10:03 AM
It appears to me that several of you should proofread you comments before posting. For those of you who seem to think the IPOD's are a waste of money, consult your handy dandy dictionary. For those who feel that technology is the wave of the future, but only makes our students lazier, put these children to work! Call Enslow Middle, ask to speak with a sixth grader, and perhaps one of them could help you with your grammatical and mechanical difficulties while utilizing the IPOD Touch.

I personly luv the I-touches because they help us learn about technology

Posted by: Tom Joad on Nov 18, 2008 at 09:13 AM
The money for these I-Pods was from a grant, not BoE money. As a researcher I use the internet to guide me to journal articles and papers. Using "useless" search engines like epscohost, pubmed and even google, I gather the neccessary material to do my work, as does every other researcher I have ever met. Perhaps instead of rejecting technology you don't understand, you should recognize that the new generation of students may require different learning tools than you did. This is one of the reasons our schools are so far behind the times. Any smple, effective piece of technology that encourages a student to learn is worth it. Students lack motivation and problem solving skills, I see it in every class I teach. Encourage your students/children if they find something that drives them, they see too little of that at home and in the world. Someone once said, "There are two kinds of knowledge, that which you know, and that which you know where to find." guess which if more useful.

To Jerry Aldini- education in Japan differs from the educational process in America. For one, students in Japan have longer school days and the teachers are in charge of what they teach. Unlike in America, they actually have educators deciding the curriculum, not elected officials. Once that starts happening, maybe America will start to catch up.

I've already talked to students that have been hurt by your comments. Don't blame the students for something you don't agree with. Enslow is full of smart kids with great futures...And I thought the goal was for WV to catch up with the rest of the country! I don't believe there is anything "lazy" about IPods. Technology boosts learning and gets students excited about doing their work.

Posted by: natasha on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:24 AM
hello my name is natasha I was reading ur comments on my I pod and I don't no who u think u r but go to Ohio we don't need u putting us down like this. It seems like there is alot of jealousy going around because we r able to have this wonderful technology at our school so ur just going to have to get over it!!!!

Posted by: Dakota on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:24 AM
I think that Enslow Middle School is the best school for the Ipod Touches because they are careful, smart, and need to have something good and they deserve them.

Posted by: Sami on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:19 AM
I am on my I-pod and not happy about the comments!

Posted by: HNF on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:19 AM
Studies have shown that ipods are a great supplement to the classroom. The teachers involved in this program have put many hours of their own time (after school hours) into this project to create videos that SUPPLEMENT their lessons. Lazy??? I don't think so....It actually shows a dedication to student learning and a strong desire to help these students advance with technology skills that will be necessary for their success living in the 21st century. Hats off to Cabell County Schools and Enslow Middle. Keep up the good work.

I do not like what u said about us we will succeed in life

Posted by: Paige on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:08 AM
We here at Enslow do not appriciate what someone put on the comments that the ccboe wasted Money on us and we have no future well just to let you know we have a great future ahead of us and we are the mighty bulldogs

these are great I love them. I hope they give all schools some.

Posted by: Sick of Stupidity on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:02 AM
I cannot believe that the Parent in the first comment deemed these children as "students that will not succeed in life." Go on to Ohio....we don't need your negativity about our students in WV. It is people like you who make it harder on kids to succeed.

Posted by: lacey on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:01 AM
I was just reading your comments on my I-TOUCH I don't like what you said.

Posted by: JH on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:52 AM
Parent, it's so nice of you to say that these students will not succeed in life. I am a product of the Cabell County school system and I believe very much that I have succeeded in life. Everybody needs to calm down, this is already happening around the rest of the country and for those of you like parent that think you couldn't possibly get a good education using an iPod as a learning tool look at Duke University. I am sure you would feel your child was getting a good education at one of the more well known Universities in the country, when in fact 5% of Duke's classes already require an iPod. Computers were always thought of as a good learning tool, but put a small handheld computer in a students hand and it is a waste of money? Technology is the best way to relate and excite todays students and that is why this is a good program.

Posted by: Parent on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:40 AM
CCBoE is ridiculous, we're in an economic depression and they waste thousands of dollars on gadgets for students that will not succeed in life. Oh well, that's why I am moving to Ohio, where my child can receive a proper education.

Posted by: TIRED on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:23 PM
AGAIN WHAT A WASTE. CCBOE HAS THAT KIND OF MONEY TO TOSS AROUND, WHY NOT SPEND MONEY ON A SCHOOL FOR THOSE STUDENTS.NOTNING SURPRISES ME THAT THE CCBOE AND Bill Smith do. i-pods why not give them the school promised by the boe ,Bill Smith and Todd Alexander .CCBOE STOP THIS GIVE EMS AND BHMS WHAT VOTERS VOTED FOR, FOR THE SHAME OF IT , AND BOARD MEMBERS YOU CAN ALSO BE REPLACED .AND DO THIS COUNTY A FAVOR AND SEND BILL PACKING, NO MORE GOOD OLD BUDDY SYSTEM ,

Posted by: Jerry Aldini on Nov 17, 2008 at 09:48 PM
Technology should SUPPLEMENT the learning & not DRIVE the learning. It sounds like more work to me. When is the teacher going to record this podcast? They've already used the lesson plans, now they have to make a recording??? Children in Japan actually spend little time in front of a computer and yet they can speak 2 or 3 languages by the time they are in High School.

Posted by: C on Nov 17, 2008 at 09:44 PM
I think this is so cool the technology. But this is the exact reasons I am homeschooling one kid this year and doing my other two next. The school system is getting lazy no they are already there!!

Posted by: jw on Nov 17, 2008 at 07:47 PM
Waste of school money, I would say yes. How many of these will be broken.

Posted by: me on Nov 17, 2008 at 07:44 PM
Even though this sounds like a great idea, this only means the United States is becoming more lazy! No wonder why the other countries have higher IQ levels! They do not depend on an unreliable search engine to teach their children such as google!

  • Posted By: omgI am so sick and tired of hearing how public school teachers are indebted to the public for their salary. Many of you are so freakin nosey that if your neighbor stopped too fast, you'd have to get a crane to remove your head from their rear. I am so tired of this drug test line. Teachers deserve to pee in peace and so do you. Why should teachers be forced to have their personal lives paraded all over the news? That is exactly what would happen. If a typical joe blow got fired from the coal mines for drugs, it wouldn't make front page news. A teacher being fired for drugs would. You people expect teachers to be the mother, father, grandparent, clergyman, counselor, as well as the teacher. You don't do anything with your kids but expect the teacher to fix all the problem you create. Some of them probably need drugs by the time they are done raising your spoiled kids who think the world owes them something on a silver platter. Take your own drug test before you get pregnant.
  • Posted By: SophieRe: The student (Hinzman?) being expelled for using foul language after being bullied & beaten on school grounds; you should not have been expelled for expressing your hurt, anger & disgust. You were a victim and did nothing. It is unreasonable to punish the victim - so what if he cussed - I'd cuss too if someone beat the beegeebers out of me. The kid who beat you should receive jail time & counciling; the kid who filmed you & released it on U-Tube should too. It has often been said that television is desensitizing our children so badly they have no empathy for others. This is a prime example. I hope the school board will have enough common sense to clear this victims school record of the incident as he should not have been expelled, and get him counciling also as such a trauma will surly have an effect on a young life.

  • Posted By: GeorgeAs a parent I have no problem being drug tested. I'll stand in line right behind Katy.
  • Posted By: goodorbadI look at it like this-if you dont have anything to hide, shut up and do the test!
  • Posted By: RickI think all teachers should be drug tested, I drive a transit bus for our county and I want the public to know I am drug free and teachers should want everyone to know the same, that their children are not in the care of people on drugs,if you have nothing to hide why object to random testing I know I don't
  • Posted By: TeaI can't even imagine that our teachers have not been drug tested up until this time. Anyone who refuses should be fired. These are our children!!! People take drug test when they don't even work with people, let alone children. These are government jobs and we should have a say in what they have to do.
  • Posted By: AriCheers to Rob-I feel ya!
  • Posted By: joeI have worked for companies all over this nation and have had to take drug tests. Why should teachers be exempt from this practice? It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: KatyAs a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!
  • Posted By: stephenWhy the heavy emphasis ont he damage to property and life Israel is doing . Where was the media uproar for years that Hamas was rocketing Israel irespective of innocent israelis.. Hamas is actualykilling their own citizens by firing rockets from UN schools and residents. Why does UN allow Hamas to use facilities for attacking Israel, then complain when Israel responds to protect their territory and citizens. Israel targets military targets, respons to from whence rockets or gun fire comes. What would we fire at if Huntington was attacked? Why does the media not put bla,e where balame belongs, and give moral support to the aggreived. What would America do if attacked? to whom would we listen? Russia, Saudi Arabia,Iran?.Media get REAL! Who has given Hamas and the Palestinians millions with which they could buy weapons---American taxpayers money!
  • Posted By: RobertAlthough I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.
  • Posted By: BoydIf the state's budget is doing so well, why don't we use some of this money to help towns and cities in the state who are in trouble with their budget, or will this just become another pay raise for politicians?
  • Posted By: RobWhy does everyone have to be so into using the term "racist" and have that kind of attitude. I know what my heritage is and who my ancestors were but you want to know what I consider myself? I AM AN AMERICAN! I was born and raised in this country and that's how I feel it should be. Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: ChrisTo Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here, your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: PabloTeachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: CraigIf what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?
  • Posted By: teresaracist lmao i am one cherokee, german, irish, german, and who knows what else TIRED of hearing of racist comments u are either GOOD OR BAD k no skin color needed just evil or NOT
  • Posted By: Ex-OfficerI agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.
  • Posted By: GarlandWhat's the difference between teachers and other workers(coal mineers, bus drivers, state employees, etc.)? Teachers aren't any better are they?
  • Posted By: This is not a comment, but I would like comments on it please. What do you think of Poca High School? Racist or not?
  • Posted By: RobertWe the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
