CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Next summer without the Charleston Regatta could mean a change of plans for a lot of folks during the 2009 Labor Day weekend.

Without sponsors there will not be a regatta next summer, according to Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.

It was in the early 70s when Charleston got its first taste of the regatta. Nearly four decades later, the city might have lost its appetite for the Labor Day tradition.

The crowds, the entertainment and even the name have changed over the years. Meanwhile, the centerpiece of the regatta -- the line up of sternwheelers -- have disappeared. Most of them rode a wave out of town years ago -- not to be seen again at this event.

Now, the event itself appears to be headed in the same direction. Jones made it clear at Monday night's City Council meeting that the money has run dry.

"It's a call that can be changed if someone would step forward with the money," Jones said. "I don't think that's very likely. We need $400,000. We can raise about 10 percent of that, but the city of Charleston can't keep funding that particular event."

That news has come to the dismay of many local residents who said they attend the regatta regularly.

Next year could mark the first summer in a long time when you won't hear the phrase, "You Gotta Regatta."

Jones said Charleston will have other events to keep everyone busy next summer including Festivall, Live on the Levee and the Doo Wop and Run car show.

Original story
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Mayor Danny Jones suggested Monday night that the 2009 Regatta be canceled, unless sponsors step forward to help pay for the event.

Jones says that there has been a lack of sponsors for next year's event.

Private sponsors would have to come up with at least $350,000 in order to save the 2009 Charleston Regatta, according to the mayor. In 2008, the event lost $100,000.

Charleston's Sternwheel Regatta has been an annual riverfront tradition in the city since 1971. Thousands of people have come every year to enjoy live entertainment and other activities.

Seems like 'Danny Boy" has forgotten when the regatta first started (an idea formed in a basement for something for the people of charleston to do during the summer) there wasn't ANYTHING to do in Chars.or much of a Chas. PERIOD! Then came regatta, then came people, then came the money that helped make charleston what it is today. And that was done ALL with volunteer help! THEN the city took over and paid (other people not the ones that had donated their time n materials all those years) and slowly "the regatta" as we knew it,slowly went down hill! This is exactly what happens when you let government interfer or get their grubbly hands n noses in the mix. I say try to bring back the old regatta, where volunteers did the work,ONLY *regatta people (vendors) were allowed* and the money stayed IN the regatta cof' not in the hands of the city that can't even fix it's own roads! W/O the original Regatta, theres no way Charleston would be and have what it has to this day!

Thanks Dollar Danny, enjoy the raise.

How did Danny Jones get in office anyone? What nitwits voted for him? Apparently a lot of you did since he won the election. I guess you get what you ask for. I hope you are happy with the $2 per week and now the loss of the regatta. Oh and I'm sure he'd love to just shut down the bvld all together for his stupid car shows.

THANK YOU WSAZ!You made the right choice on posting my comments, now possibly we can work together to HELP people. The first step is to educate people.Thats more powerful than a handout. Now,about the Regatta:I havent really cared much for it personally since the early-mid nineties, but thats a little chunk of happiness for some people that can get to see semi-famous bands and singers that otherwise they would never have gotten to see.Try to focus on the positive,Charleston. There has been a shooting at the TownCenterMall, but nobody called for its closing?I dont think theres ever been a shooting at the Regatta. They sell beer upstairs at the food court at the mall, nobody has EVER questioned that-or the alcohol sold at ALL the restaurants at the mall since ever...so,now you can look forward to a bunch of people who are STILL gonna drink at the BARS on CAPITOL ST. which has ALWAYS been 1 BLOCK from the Regatta,ANGRY cause its hot,it's summertime, and theres nothing for them to do.THINKaboutIT.

I hope it stays gone.Just a bunch of drunks and druggies anyway.

this is directed towards wsaz: why didnt you post my last comment? I didnt use foul language, I didnt name call, I didnt do anything wrong that was provided in your "guidelines". I simply stated the obvious. I purposely worded my comment, with the feeling you would not post it. It dose't really matter that you didnt post, the real purpose was so I could write this one to you, now that I know that I got your attention: You are controlled media, only providing information that helps the agenda stay on track. I want you to know, everytime you look in the mirror, YOU are part of the problem. If you need some ideas on how you should try to be, look to Carrie Kline or Tony Cavalier. They are good people. the rest of you, common media scum. Think about it...

Well "nameless" you will didn't hear me braging about Spencer or Walton. They are nice little country towns but I doubt they are on AAA's must see cities list. But anyone that believes that Charleston has anything to offer needs to travel out of state more often.

Posted by: To Roane Co. on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:35 PM
I realize Charleston is not as upscale as say, Spencer, or Walton but we are trying.

Posted by: whatEconomicCrisis? on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:19 PM
HAHA!Are you guys serious?Wow,West Virginians are just not interested in paying attention.Go research where your money goes.Go look at your politicians' houses!Go look at their cars! They make your homes look like a tool shack/your car like an apple cart. Now Im sure plenty of people will respond to this comment:"aww, buddy if you dont lak it,u can go 2 hell!" but being mad at this comment dosent change your situation.Seriously, WAKE UP! Heres the deal:That last little bit of happiness that the Regatta brought you-is gone now.Now you have nothing. It wasnt up to you.You are a WORKER.Go to your little job and talk about how up it is, around the water cooler.Thats the extent of your power.Meanwhile, think 2 yourself:"Gawly, I sure wish I could go on a vacation lak that Danny Jones. He's prolly gettin' a tan in Jamaic-ker."And you're probably right.Didnt you notice that all those commercials made to romance you into voting for your local govt. officials ENDED after elections?DONT CRY...

I hate to see the Reatta go but the Mayor and other officals have ruined the Regatta. They ran off the Sternwheelers and good acts. Too much beer, drunks every where. Regatta used to be fun but not anymore. Dr. Jones ( Mayor) has tried every way to kill the Regatta. Hope he is satisfied.

Posted by: Oh well on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:20 PM
The Regatta was ruined years ago anyway so be it. Hey, more than likely this will be another feather in Dannys hat along with another 30% pay raise. Great state we have but sorry politicians!!!

Posted by: RoaneCo. on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Gee John Deere, I can't believe you would say something like that. With all the great concerts that come to Charleston, the Hardrock Cafe, Planet Hollywood, the theme park, the fine dinning available etc...

Posted by: Susan on Nov 18, 2008 at 11:21 AM
Hey John Deere if you are so unhappy with WV maybe you should just leave. I am proud to live in our state and I am proud to be a West Virginian. But it's funny with a name like "John Deere" you should fit right in, in a SMALL Hillbilly town.

Posted by: geez buddy on Nov 18, 2008 at 11:07 AM
To John Deere, have you had your medication this morning. Oh, and your appointment with your anger management counselor is at 5:00. Please don't be late.

Posted by: john deere on Nov 18, 2008 at 09:36 AM
Hey Amanda & Susan the real TRUTH HURTS !Charleston,WV thinks it is a Major player on the East Coast, and it is not even close to being what some people want everybody to believe.WV in general is a SAD State!Wake up and get REAL.

Posted by: Bill on Nov 18, 2008 at 09:23 AM
Charleston needs Mr. Catalano back in charge. He was the one that brought in the great entertainment during the 80's when the crowds amassed 100,000.

Posted by: CHERYL on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:42 AM
GOOD. CHARLESTON DOESN'T NEED IT ANYWAY. SAVE SOME MONEY, SINCE THEY DON'T HAVE ANY. WAY TO GO DANNY JONES...

Posted by: Susan on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:02 AM
John Deere, U R STUPID!!!!!!!!!!! Danny Jones so R U !!!! Where is all of the convention money going that is coming to town? And Tourism money?

Posted by: Jerry Aldini on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:01 AM
Good...maybe the other useless festivals will go next. The role of government is NOT to entertain. The usual political theater is entertainment enough and already more than we can afford. Riverfest in St. Albans comes to mind as a useless endeavor and a huge money loser. St. Albans foots the bill for the overtime for the Parks & Rec workers, police, & fire. That's about a $30,000 budget loss every year. And St. Albans says they don't have any money.....

Posted by: Marcus on Nov 18, 2008 at 07:54 AM
I wish you people would see that Ding Jones is just wanting to see his name on the news papers so he can show his children what a hag he was. I listen to talk radio and he thinks that he needs to have in put for the entire state. You can tell that Kent Carper & Danny Jones are close.

Posted by: amanda on Nov 18, 2008 at 07:15 AM
hey john deere!! I think I speak for everyone in Charleston WV when i say KISS MY @**!! We're proud of out town if you don't like Charleston get out, stay out and don't worry about it. We don't need jerks like you anyway!! if i could give you the finger i imagine it would look a little like this (mlm)

Posted by: To Allen on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:39 AM
Your a nut case! Thats all I have to say about that!

Posted by: huh.who knew on Nov 18, 2008 at 05:31 AM
They still have that.....It has got to be so lame I forgot all about it.

Posted by: Mingo on Nov 18, 2008 at 05:17 AM
Can we please leave God out of this... I don't think he even comes to the Regatta!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: I hate crooks on Nov 18, 2008 at 02:15 AM
We have had Regatta since 1971 and it takes Danny Jones to come in and exploit it for a way to make private donars pay for it so he can keep more of Charlestons' budget accessible to him. I have seen the cars the mayor drives (sorry, has someone drive) in the Capitol Car Wash. Sell 2 of them and there is Regatta.

Posted by: Jason on Nov 18, 2008 at 02:00 AM
Hey WV, why don't you just find something else to do....maybe entertain yourself if you are intelligent enough to do so.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:39 AM
They need to have more security at the regatta anyway. A young girl that I go to church with, was at the regatta this past summer, with some friends. A guy started some trouble with them, & the young girl got chased by this crazed lunatic. He was running after her with a knife. She had to run all the way to the mall, just to get away. So maybe canceling the event isn't such a bad thing after all.

Posted by: Kyle on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:18 AM
I am a Chrisitan, yet I hardy believe the Regatta being cancelled is a sign that our Lord is coming back. This isnt even close to a Depression, yall love to worry dont ya?

Posted by: Charleston citizen on Nov 18, 2008 at 12:16 AM
This should not be a surprise to anyone ! Danny Jones has been out to cancel Regatta for several years ! I hope Danny realizes that he is on his way out of office ! Remeber and vote accordingly.

Posted by: To: Think Smart on Nov 17, 2008 at 11:49 PM
The Regatta is only four days anyway, so shortening it wouldn't do much unless it was just shortened a day.

Posted by: John on Nov 17, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Seriously folks... calm down. How many alarmists are out there about the economy? We're still by far the strongest nation economically in the world because capitalism works. Democrats scared the beejeezus out of everyone, and that's why we elected a president with absolutely NO executive experience over an honorable war veteran. Hope you all have a good time with that. I buried my money and my guns in the back yard. Come get 'em.

Posted by: Amber on Nov 17, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Hey Danny, why dont you take that extra 4.38 you take out of my pay check every two weeks and apply it to something that actually makes my tax dollars go to something decent. Its absolutely amazing how theses people basically "beg" for money and the funny thing is. They have more money than you or I could even think about.

Posted by: Think Smart... on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:39 PM
Why not just shorten the event...instead of being a week long why not make it just the weekend?? Anytime I've worked the Regatta the weekend has been the business worthy...sooo shortening it would not effect that much...just a thought...

Posted by: Kris on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:37 PM
We are not realizing how close we are to a great depression. We're not noticing it as much as other people in other states because we're already a poor state! People need to wake up!!! It's seriously at our back door!! Scary times...and this is predicted to be a worse depression than even the Great Depression. Lord help us!!

Posted by: Me on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:27 PM
I dont think God will let the world get that bad. He will come back to get us before then!...PPL better quit worrying about how they are gonna prepare themselves in yrs ahead, and worry about where they are gonna end up after this world ends. It wont be long, the signs are already here!!!!!!!

Posted by: Rob on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:24 PM
What? You people couldn't see this coming? They have been trying to kill the Regatta for years, that way they have a good excuse to raise the user fee again. Let's see, they need $350,000.00, I wonder how many people work in Charleston. By golly I believe they just might be able to pull it off! NOT

Posted by: Allen on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:02 PM
WOW!This might be the wake up call.I do not think people around here realize how bad things are going to become.I mean, they just don't think we could have another depression.Well it's coming. What would you have done if you were alive in 1929 and you knew the next 10 years were going to be the great depression? How are you preparing yourself now? Are you going to plant a garden? Have you stockpiled toilet paper?

Now it seems that Charleston,WV is not the Big Time City that they think they are, always trying to be a Major Metro Area,I have got news for them they are only another SMALL Hillbilly Town!

  • Posted By: omgI am so sick and tired of hearing how public school teachers are indebted to the public for their salary. Many of you are so freakin nosey that if your neighbor stopped too fast, you'd have to get a crane to remove your head from their rear. I am so tired of this drug test line. Teachers deserve to pee in peace and so do you. Why should teachers be forced to have their personal lives paraded all over the news? That is exactly what would happen. If a typical joe blow got fired from the coal mines for drugs, it wouldn't make front page news. A teacher being fired for drugs would. You people expect teachers to be the mother, father, grandparent, clergyman, counselor, as well as the teacher. You don't do anything with your kids but expect the teacher to fix all the problem you create. Some of them probably need drugs by the time they are done raising your spoiled kids who think the world owes them something on a silver platter. Take your own drug test before you get pregnant.
  • Posted By: SophieRe: The student (Hinzman?) being expelled for using foul language after being bullied & beaten on school grounds; you should not have been expelled for expressing your hurt, anger & disgust. You were a victim and did nothing. It is unreasonable to punish the victim - so what if he cussed - I'd cuss too if someone beat the beegeebers out of me. The kid who beat you should receive jail time & counciling; the kid who filmed you & released it on U-Tube should too. It has often been said that television is desensitizing our children so badly they have no empathy for others. This is a prime example. I hope the school board will have enough common sense to clear this victims school record of the incident as he should not have been expelled, and get him counciling also as such a trauma will surly have an effect on a young life.

  • Posted By: goodorbadI look at it like this-if you dont have anything to hide, shut up and do the test!
  • Posted By: RickI think all teachers should be drug tested, I drive a transit bus for our county and I want the public to know I am drug free and teachers should want everyone to know the same, that their children are not in the care of people on drugs,if you have nothing to hide why object to random testing I know I don't
  • Posted By: TeaI can't even imagine that our teachers have not been drug tested up until this time. Anyone who refuses should be fired. These are our children!!! People take drug test when they don't even work with people, let alone children. These are government jobs and we should have a say in what they have to do.
  • Posted By: AriCheers to Rob-I feel ya!
  • Posted By: joeI have worked for companies all over this nation and have had to take drug tests. Why should teachers be exempt from this practice? It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: KatyAs a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!

Why does UN allow Hamas to use facilities for attacking Israel, then complain when Israel responds to protect their territory and citizens. Israel targets military targets, respons to from whence rockets or gun fire comes. What would we fire at if Huntington was attacked? Why does the media not put bla,e where balame belongs, and give moral support to the aggreived. What would America do if attacked? to whom would we listen? Russia, Saudi Arabia,Iran?.Media get REAL! Who has given Hamas and the Palestinians millions with which they could buy weapons---American taxpayers money!
  • Posted By: RobertAlthough I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.
  • Posted By: BoydIf the state's budget is doing so well, why don't we use some of this money to help towns and cities in the state who are in trouble with their budget, or will this just become another pay raise for politicians?

I know what my heritage is and who my ancestors were but you want to know what I consider myself? I AM AN AMERICAN! I was born and raised in this country and that's how I feel it should be. Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: ChrisTo Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here, your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: PabloTeachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: CraigIf what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?
  • Posted By: teresaracist lmao i am one cherokee, german, irish, german, and who knows what else TIRED of hearing of racist comments u are either GOOD OR BAD k no skin color needed just evil or NOT
  • Posted By: Ex-OfficerI agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.
  • Posted By: GarlandWhat's the difference between teachers and other workers(coal mineers, bus drivers, state employees, etc.)? Teachers aren't any better are they?
  • Posted By: This is not a comment, but I would like comments on it please. What do you think of Poca High School? Racist or not?
  • Posted By: RobertWe the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
