MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A Meigs County man was killed in a 3-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 7 and Ohio 124 Wednesday evening.

According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, 23-year-old William Lehew of Pomeroy tried to pass a Jeep on the right side berm of the road and lost control.

Troopers say Lehew’s car then hit a livestock truck head-on that was traveling in the other direction. His car then hit the Jeep.

Lehew was ejected from his car and died at the scene.

The drivers of the Jeep and truck had minor injuries, and were treated at the scene.

If you have a picture of William Lehew you'd like to share with us, please e-mail it to pix@wsaz.com

IT IS A SHAME WHEN SOMEONE DIES IN AN ACCIDENT THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO BE SO HATEFUL. WHEN I HEARD OF NATE'S ACCIDENT I WAS CERTAIN HE WAS FROM JACKSON BUT HAD TO CHECK AND BE SURE. I REMEMBER THIS YOUNG MAN FROM JACKSON IRONMEN FOOTBALL AND WE USED TO GET SUCH A KICK OUT OF HIM! WE USE TO SAY HE WAS A GREAT CHEERLEADER FOR HIS TEAM AS HE DID EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER TO KEEP THEM AND THE FANS PUMPED DURING THE GAME. A TRUE JOY TO WATCH ON THE FIELD. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO THE FAMILY.

u were always a wonderful person and for all these stupid peoples rude comments u must not understand what it is like to lose someone that u love or u would never put something like that for anyone to read no one deserves to die and u are sick for saying that everone makes mistakes

Well I think that since it says the comments have to be approved by WSAZ that alot of the comments shouldn't have been posted to start with. That is disrespectful to Nates family and friends that are grieving and miss him very much. I think only the comments that speak how wonderful, loved, and missed he was should be posted. There are alot of cruel disrespectful people in this world.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:41 PM
obama...since you have such strong opinions why dont you post your real name.. Nate wasnt the perfect person..and yes he didnt always do the right thing..but Nate was an amazing person to everyone. so dont talk bad about him.. you didnt know him. he is so loved and missed it hurts to even breath knowing hes not here..we all love nate and wish him the well in heaven.

To April,Matt,Conner....yes, of course I understand that a life was lost. However, do YOU understand as a citizen of that county WHO is answering your emergency calls? She may be too stressed to handle it properly. She has as much as admitted to being short with someone who was calling in for help for your friend/loved one. I just think the people of Meigs County deserve more than that - having grown up there and my family still lives there, I want more for them. I mean no disrespect whatsoever to Mr. Lehew or those who loved him. You all have my very deepest sympathy.

No, Ms. "Not easy", I do not plan to fill out an application. I am certain you knew the requirements of your job when YOU filled out the application. You were not cordial at all to the caller on that night, nor did you attempt to be professional in any way. You should listen to EACH AND EVERY CALLER because, gee, it's your JOB and you just might learn something when you LISTEN instead of scolding. Because you're stressed and then say "gee, didn't mean anything by it" does NOT make it okay - and at no time was my Mother THANKED for calling. She didn't REQUIRE a thank you - but she sure didn't require your smart mouth either. There was a DEAD MAN in the road and you thought YOU were having a bad day!! Wow. So, since there is only 1 dispatcher, you need to let all of Meigs County know that only 1 emergency may happen at a time and DEAR GOD, only 1 person may call about it!!

WHAT HIGH SCHOOL DID THIS YOUNG MAN ATTEND?? MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I KNOW THESE ARE VERY TRYING TIMES. PLEASE TAKE COMFORT IN THE MEMORIES HE MUST HAVE BROUGHT TO YOUR LIVES. OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU.

I am not a person to judge, Nate, was a friend of mine & a Child to a family, I know that he should not of passed on a right hand, but how can people be so rude and say he deserved to die? Thats so wrong he is a human being someone God gave to be in the world & decided it was his time to go home, so to the people who want to make such hurtful messages on this incident, how about having a minute to ask W.W.J.D? I doubt he would be making rude comments, & pointing a finger, I think he would be saying a life went home to be with my Father, he's in a good place... Now for Nate's sake do whats right and ask yourselves if that was us, would you want people to make comments about (you) or your family? No, Its coming close to the Lord's Return, so how about we all ask this question, What would we do if we only had thirty days to live? Let that sink in...To Nate's Family, God Bless You! and to those who were all part of Nate, Friends and such... Praise God, For taking another Angel Home...R.I.P

The comment posted by "obama", Nate was 23 years old, 23! He did not "deserve" this. He was someones child, grandson, and friend. We know what he did was wrong, you don't have to make such hateful comments. The choice was stupid, but that doesn't make Nate who he was. Nate was a great guy that would do what he could to lift a down spirit. We all make mistakes, some worse than others. His family is suffering over his loss the last thing they need is for you to put in your two cents, imagine for one minute how they feel. I would venture to say you don't have children. It was horrible for you say something as heartless as he "deserved" it, no matter how "you feel" you should keep your negativity to yourself. RIP Nate!

sometimes things do get reported wrong but are usually promptly corrected. fiery or not someone died in a crash-what a tragedy. at least it was on the news, so many times terrible things like accidents and/or deaths happen to people i may have known and the news never gets out until after the funeral. family and close friends are too grief stricken to think to call everyone especially if you were only close to the person and not their family, they may not even know you. also do not judge unless you were in his jeep- he could have been distracted only to realize (MAYBE) he had to pass in order to avoid hitting them in the rear. that has happened to me.

Posted by: butterfly on Nov 21, 2008 at 04:38 PM
i fully agree the 911 operator needs a reprimanded in some way. i do understand how hectic things can be in an emergency situation (have been there), however, a 911 operator is supposed to be trained to handle whatever comes their way. just imagine what that operator would do in a disaster situation?? scary, huh?? she could have at least been nice and said something like-help is on the way, please call back if anything else happens or they do not arrive. she does need retrained, i do not believe reporting news, etc. for 911 help is harassment.

Posted by: $BAGS on Nov 21, 2008 at 03:08 PM
Well bj I figure you would be happy at the fact that WSAZ did not post my first blog

Posted by: LORI on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:18 PM
TO NOT EASY--IF SOMEONE CALLS AND REPORTS A CRASH AND SAYS IT IS A DEER IN THE ROAD AND THEN REALIZES IT IS A BODY (WHICH MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE) I THINK THEY SHOULD CALL BACK TO 911 AS THIS WILL SURELY AFFECT THE RESPONSE TIME. NON THE LESS--THE DISPATCHERS ARE PROFESSIONALS AND NO ONE SEEMS TO BE DENYING WHAT THE DISPATCHER SAID AND IT IS TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE. I HAVE FRIENDS THAT ARE DISPATCHERS AND KNOW THEY HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT AND AT TIMES DIFFICULT TIME. A CALLER SHOULD NEVER BE TOLD--DO NOT HARRASS ME OR BE MADE TO FEEL STUPID. WHEN PEOPLE CALL IN TO REPORT THINGS THEY DO NOT KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE HAS CALLED OR NOT. THANK GOD FOR THOSE WHO DO CARE ENOUGH TO CALL!! YOU ARE ALSO DEALING WITH FOLKS INVOLVED OR WITNESSED A VERY TRAUMATIC EVENT SO PLEASE TRY TO REMEMBER THAT. MOST OF US WHEN WE ARE DOING OUR JOB OUR DOING MULTILPLE THINGS AT ONE TIME. DOES NOT GIVE US THE OK TO BE RUDE.

does anyone understand that a great person died in that crash? nate was amazing and didnt deserve to die but SOME of you are just woried about the news headline and the dispatcher....a life was lost why dont you try and have respect..lots of people loved big nate and we are all hurting. nate...you ARE very loved and you will never be forgotten..Rest In Peace (god picked the perfect person to be an angel)

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 11:12 AM
He must have been a really good person and my thoughts are with the family for losing their family member. But people need to understand that careless driving will only result in tragedy. some drive like they are oblivious to anything around them. We can never be careful enough, our own lives and all those around us depend on it.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Has anybody called the EMS office and reported this dispatcher in question? It seems this is not the first time she has pulled one of these stubts. How long is she going to get away with it?

Why do people leave "shout out" comments to the deceased on a local news comment page? It was an unfortunate accident I imagine. Why was the driver passing on the right berm? If people would slow down and quit rushing, more lives will be spared on the highways!

Posted by: bj on Nov 21, 2008 at 07:22 AM
for the people who want to talk about wrong headlines and sitting in traffic instead of big nate your worthless. nate was like a son to me. so choose what you say carefully

Posted by: obama on Nov 21, 2008 at 07:06 AM
got what he deserved, doing something stupid like that passing on the right. yes i said got what he deserved. Think about what could have happened if he had a habit of doing that. How many other people could he have hurt or even killed. It is good to get people like that out of the gene pool. I just hope the people he hurt are ok.

Posted by: Not easy on Nov 21, 2008 at 05:28 AM
Try getting 10-15 calls at 1 time, on 4 differnt lines, trying to dispatch help and keeping track of all the times and personal that respond to these scenes. Not really an easy job as most people would think it is. Dispatchers can get short with people in these situations but we dont mean anything by it. when you have alot of calls for the same thing we dont have time to sit there and listen to it over and over. we thank you for calling and making sure its been reported. there is only 1 dispather and about 5 to 6 things that have to be done at 1 time. We dont have time to play around. We try to be as professional as we can but it dont always happen in bad situations. If you think you can do better please come and fill out an application.

I need to apoligize to WSAZ for the comment they did'nt post and revise/tame it. I was referring to Jacks comment about his inconvenience of setting in traffic. I just want to know how many accidents he's responded to, because there seems to be a Jack at every accident scene. I've been answering accident calls for thirty-three years, it takes time to perform all that needs done at the scene. The only way to work safely around it is to stop traffic. Most motorists are very courtious to this, however there's always a Jack who is only thinking about his agenda. Chill out Jack we don't want to be there any longer that we have to. Many emergency agencies are adopting the policy of closing the road at accident scenes. This is for the safety of the accident victims, first responders, and the apparatus on scene. So Jack next time find a detour.

I would like to add that my mother and nephew were first (or close to it) on the scene. My mother called 911 when she first thought the accident was caused by a deer and that's what was in the road. She then called back to report it was a body and they needed help NOW. She was scolded by the EMS dispatcher..."Who is this? Stop harrassing me while I am trying to do my job...and don't call back again!" I was furious to hear that - and so should the people who live in Meigs County. Evidently she had received numerous calls to report this terrible accident but I would think that goes with the territory. I hope someone can find out who this woman was and offer her some retraining or make it so she can go find herself a less stressful job. Shouldn't there be recordings of all the calls for her supervisor to review? I think her unprofessional behavior is unacceptable and something seriously needs to be done to remove her from this position.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:50 PM
To the dumb SOB saying it said nothing about the fiery crash!. In fact if you would read WSAZ's main page you will find "UPDATE: One Killed in Meigs Crash, Name Released Last Updated: 10:20 AM 11/20/08 - A person died Wednesday evening in a fiery crash on state Route 7. (Full Story) " AND I QUOTE! so before you go trying to make other people look bad. Open your eyes !

To: Anonymous at 12:26, before you go bashing, the headline actually said "Fiery Crash" at the beginning.

Posted by: lisa on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:23 PM
my thoughts and prayers are with all involved and to anonymous just to let you know that the dispatcher in meigs county did tell on the police scanner that a car was engaulfed, she had told that 3-4 times to different units that was being dispatched to the scene.

Gee Jack...your lack of compassion for those involved in the accidents is sad. Try thinking of the poor families who received devastating phone calls last night about the injury or death of a loved one....and less about yourself! Keep all of the victims and families in your prayers--especially during the upcoming holiday season.

A serious wreck on I77 just above Fairplain. The traffic was held up for 3 hrs, why, after "Life Flight" had left traffic was still held until the wreck had been comopletely cleared, no consideration for those setting in the car for hrs. Attend to the injured and do not create more speeding to a destination held back by apparent people in capable of handling such situations.

I have had a car pass me last summer at kmart in Burlington Ohio like that. He blew gravel in my open window hitting my kids that were in the back seat in car seats. This is dangerous you can't know what the person is doing if I had been making a right hand turn he would have killed my kids or hurt them badly. He was traveling at a high rate of speed. I would encourge everyone to leave earlier allow enough time to get to where they are going at a safe speed. There are people who drive the speed limit and obey the laws. Have a care

So sad. Folks, lets not forget to buckle up in our vehicles. Perhaps if this young man had he wouldn't have been ejected and may still be with us. Slowing down our driving doesn't hurt either. Also, when we find traffic backing up behind us, lets pull over and let them around. These are just a few things we can all do that will hopefully cause less injury and death on our highways. Of course, my prayers are with the young man, his family and friends, and the others that were involved in this tragic incident.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 07:53 AM
This is very sad. May God be with this young boy. This should be a reminder to us all to not be in such a hurry in life because it can be over before we know it. There is NEVER a reason to pass on the right side of the road.

Posted by: reaper on Nov 20, 2008 at 07:21 AM
That place is always bad. people forget that headlights coming towards you in the lane you want to pull into, usually means that a car is coming. But most just ignore that and pull out in front of you there anyway.

I was stuck in traffic around 9 at the intersection, the crash still has not been cleaned up and both side of the road are still blocked off. The State Highway Patrol was arriving on scence when I turned around.

Posted by: anonymous lady on Nov 19, 2008 at 09:39 PM
We came thru there around 7:45 p.m. and were told the road would be closed at least 2 hours....looked bad. We could see it involved a cattle truck and at least 3 other vehicles.

This was not a fiery crash. I was the third car on the scene. One was thrown from the car and laid doa in the north bond lane. The tractor trailer was down the inbankment were it came to rest.

  • Posted By: SophieRe: The student (Hinzman?) being expelled for using foul language after being bullied & beaten on school grounds; you should not have been expelled for expressing your hurt, anger & disgust. You were a victim and did nothing. It is unreasonable to punish the victim - so what if he cussed - I'd cuss too if someone beat the beegeebers out of me. The kid who beat you should receive jail time & counciling; the kid who filmed you & released it on U-Tube should too. It has often been said that television is desensitizing our children so badly they have no empathy for others. This is a prime example. I hope the school board will have enough common sense to clear this victims school record of the incident as he should not have been expelled, and get him counciling also as such a trauma will surly have an effect on a young life.
  • Posted By: BoydAny one who is employed and gets paid by the general public, us, should have no problem taking urine tests. After all they are in the pubic debt for paying them for their work. Its simple NO TEST, NO JOB. This is not an attempt to violate rights, it is an attempt to enforce the publics right for federal, state and municipal employees who can be TRUSTED.
  • Posted By: GeorgeAs a parent I have no problem being drug tested. I'll stand in line right behind Katy.
  • Posted By: goodorbadI look at it like this-if you dont have anything to hide, shut up and do the test!
  • Posted By: RickI think all teachers should be drug tested, I drive a transit bus for our county and I want the public to know I am drug free and teachers should want everyone to know the same, that their children are not in the care of people on drugs,if you have nothing to hide why object to random testing I know I don't
  • Posted By: TeaI can't even imagine that our teachers have not been drug tested up until this time. Anyone who refuses should be fired. These are our children!!! People take drug test when they don't even work with people, let alone children. These are government jobs and we should have a say in what they have to do.
  • Posted By: AriCheers to Rob-I feel ya!
  • Posted By: joeI have worked for companies all over this nation and have had to take drug tests. Why should teachers be exempt from this practice? It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: KatyAs a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!
  • Posted By: stephenWhy the heavy emphasis ont he damage to property and life Israel is doing . Where was the media uproar for years that Hamas was rocketing Israel irespective of innocent israelis.. Hamas is actualykilling their own citizens by firing rockets from UN schools and residents. Why does UN allow Hamas to use facilities for attacking Israel, then complain when Israel responds to protect their territory and citizens. Israel targets military targets, respons to from whence rockets or gun fire comes. What would we fire at if Huntington was attacked? Why does the media not put bla,e where balame belongs, and give moral support to the aggreived. What would America do if attacked? to whom would we listen? Russia, Saudi Arabia,Iran?.Media get REAL! Who has given Hamas and the Palestinians millions with which they could buy weapons---American taxpayers money!
  • Posted By: RobertAlthough I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.
  • Posted By: BoydIf the state's budget is doing so well, why don't we use some of this money to help towns and cities in the state who are in trouble with their budget, or will this just become another pay raise for politicians?
  • Posted By: RobWhy does everyone have to be so into using the term "racist" and have that kind of attitude. I know what my heritage is and who my ancestors were but you want to know what I consider myself? I AM AN AMERICAN! I was born and raised in this country and that's how I feel it should be. Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: ChrisTo Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here, your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: PabloTeachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: CraigIf what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?
  • Posted By: teresaracist lmao i am one cherokee, german, irish, german, and who knows what else TIRED of hearing of racist comments u are either GOOD OR BAD k no skin color needed just evil or NOT
  • Posted By: Ex-OfficerI agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.
  • Posted By: GarlandWhat's the difference between teachers and other workers(coal mineers, bus drivers, state employees, etc.)? Teachers aren't any better are they?
  • Posted By: This is not a comment, but I would like comments on it please. What do you think of Poca High School? Racist or not?
  • Posted By: RobertWe the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
