what is wroung with Lewis county Ky just put school on 1 hour delay and the roads was really bad There was so many wrecks and sum of the bus drivers didnt even know school was on a hour delay My child never went to school my child means more to me than that I want my child to live not get kill on these roads wen its that bad It should have been delay at least 2 or 3 hours to give the roads a chance to clear Lewis county dont care for our kids all they care about is the money well when a bunch of kids get kill then maybe they will think but I douet it. Dont look for my kids when it is bad. More parents need to think about their kids but no most of them just want to send them to school to get rid of them Please think the next time LCSB.Protect our kids

My kids will stay home tomorrow if it snows tonight over top of this rain. They won't be doing much at school tomorrow anyway!

Posted by: Lynn on Nov 24, 2008 at 10:40 AM
What the heck is wrong with Lincoln County? It was to dangerous this morning for our children to be on the roads! YOU IDIOTS!

Posted by: Donna on Nov 24, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Why does Cabell County Schools never call a delay??? This was crazy, just a couple more hours would have taken thousands out of harms way! CCBOE...PLEASE USE DELAYS IN THE FUTURE!

how do you know if they had a cell phone or not.that is what i thought you was not in the veacle with the one who recked so if you do not tnow what is going on keep your commint to your self debbie so shut you mouth

Posted by: Debbie on Nov 24, 2008 at 09:43 AM
Luther you are an idiot, I see just as many men with cell phones stuck to their head, and invariably they are the ones going to fast for conditions. And all you suv'ers, 4 wheel drive doesn't help much on ice, so you need to slow too, only studded tires get more grip on ice. Luther if women are the worst drivers, why do men have the most wrecks and the highest rate of fatalities. You do know that's why their insurance is higher don't you?

Posted by: Krista on Nov 23, 2008 at 06:40 PM
I live out Sycamore and my kids bus was stuck and then we couldnt get out because of the car in the ditch then when it cleared we couldn't get off willarose and my kids never made it to school and now they are saying they will be counted absent that is totally not fair, the kids should not be punished because of the BOE not delaying the schools, and as far as Luther: get a grip noone can drive on ICE!!! If my kids are punished for weather related issuses the BOE will hear from me too...

Hey LUTHER, I have been driving for 30 years, have hadddd 3 accidents, all three were caused by MEN!!! So, maybe you should rethink your comment! You must be one of the women haters, always blaming the wrongs in your life on women!!! GET A LIFE AND GROW UP!

Posted by: To Effing Luther on Nov 23, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Luther: Take your male chovanist self and get a life. I don't care what you drive...when roads are like they were Friday, ANYBODY could wreck at any moment....and when men like you drive your real-wheel drive Mustang GT's, YES you will wreck. When I drive, I see just as many men on cell phones as women. Come to grip with the times. Women these days are in better, higher paying jobs than men and can't just take off because of some ice on the road. Get over yourself and your jealousy and accept that women are more equal to men now than they ever were. It's pigs like you that make the good guys look bad.

Pig pen has it right!

So much for all the warning systems...wv roads, tv statiions et al...after I made it to work 2 hours late, I learned hwy 60 from Milton to the mall road was coated with ice and accidents. This explained the traffic through Milton. This lack of advance alert was as effective as NOT delaying Cabell county schools when they needed to be. And it's only November!

Posted by: woman driver on Nov 22, 2008 at 08:04 PM
LUTHER: YOU ARE AN IDIOT. Do you really think that just because it snows that all women should not go to work? You are probably one of those MALE drivers with a big 4wheel drive truck who thinks that he wont slide or get into an accident so you just drive and fast as you want to. WRONG! I have my CDL license and am a very careful driver and I'm FEMALE. Get a life.

Its Amazing when they call the 911 centers to see how many, how bad. and where the accidents were.911s answer is very few very minor give me a break covering up for whats really happening on the roads.BY THE WAY WHERE ARE THE NEW TRAFFIC CAMS LOCATED THAT WERE BOUGHT WITH TAX PAYERS DOLLARS> I for one would like to be able to link to them myself like Other states do to check out the road conditions Are we that secretive that we dont want the public to know what our road conditions are.Another Joe Manchin project that We payed for but cannot use.Its going to be another crappy 4 years thanks to all who voted for him again thanks alot

Posted by: Pig Pen on Nov 22, 2008 at 01:04 PM
All you 4 wheelers just need to get out of the way. These 18 wheels ain't stopping for nothing!!

Posted by: Raven on Nov 22, 2008 at 11:50 AM
Mr Joe Manchin is at fault again You elected him oh hes done so much for West Virginia give me a break 4 more years of his lame excuses.I hear hes trying to give away State Jobs to contrators to clear the roads. If they keep cutting the overtime he will get it done.Hes cut the amount of salt and the man hours used to clear the roads so hang on for another rough winter. So Quit complaning all you idiots that voted Mr Movie Star back in office after all the only time you hear or see him is in front of a camera and then he spouts his lies that you all believe.SO ONCE AGAIN MR MANCHIN I ASK YOU IS IT GOING TO BE ANOTHER LONG WINTER FOR WV OR ARE YOU NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE WORKING PEOPLE OF THIS STATE????????????????

Posted by: Fred on Nov 22, 2008 at 10:15 AM
People need to file law suits against schools. Thats the only way they will take notice. Children have died and nothing was ever done. Contact a lawyer.

Posted by: LP on Nov 22, 2008 at 08:09 AM
Luther: I am sure your comment was made just to see how many women you could get a response from so here is one from this women I passed 4 wrecks Friday morning between Hurricane and the mall and I know for sure 3 of the 4 wrecks were men driving I am not saying these men are bad drivers the weather I am sure was the reason for their misfortune. Lighten up I'm sure you made your Mother proud by your simple minded comment!

Posted by: jeremy on Nov 22, 2008 at 12:42 AM
people look i can tell you where the salt trucks are but if i do they won't approve this comment. quit whining and crying and deal with it. its winter, its gonna snow and since we have a worthless governor that you people elected again nothing is gonna get done for at least 4 more years.

Posted by: EXCUSE ME on Nov 21, 2008 at 11:08 PM
LUTHER WOMEN ARENT THE ONLY ONES ON THIER PHONES. NO ONE SHOULD BE ON THIER PHONE IN WEATHER LIKE THIS. THATS WHY THERE ARE SO MANY ACCIDENTS. BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE. BUT IM PRETTY SURE THAT MEN TALK ON THIER CELL JUST AS MUCH AS WOMEN. that was rude.

Posted by: Christy on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:29 PM
Luther,, what mental institution did u escape from? They need to be notified that you are on here and they need to find you!!!!

I have three children who attend three different schools. One in high school, one in middle school and one in elementary. Their busses run about twenty minutes apart. We waited 40 minutes to see if any would show, and when I called the school, I was told that if youv'e waited 20 minutes and a bus hasnt come, To turn around and go back home, and to send a note the next day so they can adjust absences. Why dont they let poeple know this? There were children without their parents standing there waiting for who knows how long. This morning was no day for our children to be out. I understand that Huntington wasnt bad, but in Ona and Milton, the roads were terrible! But as long as Huntington is ok I guess the rest of us are on our own.

Posted by: Seth on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:12 PM
took hours to get to school... pure ice on the road nothing but ice.. wrecks left and right buses in ditches why wasnt cabell county in a 2 hour delay there was a bus in a ditch for 2 hours almost ready to flip over and kids stranded on the bus thanks cabell county borad for risking our kids life... not like they care anyways

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 07:35 PM
All of the Roads in the City of Hurricane were horrible this morning, way to dangerous for school traffic to be on.

Posted by: Milton Mom on Nov 21, 2008 at 07:17 PM
No child left behind... but don't dare put them on a 2 hours delay. I can not believe that Cabell Co Board of Ed don't care about children, parents and staff...and for Luther - You need to stay home and because I am a woman and I can drive. I do not talk on a cell or apply makeup. I made it to work just fine today and I have been working for 21 years...thank you very much.

Thanks Joe Manchin for not buying the salt WV needs to keep drivers safer on these bad roads.I think you should get on the news and tell all the people why the roads are so bad.Tell them you didn't think salting our roads was important. It's true people,he didn't buy the salt that is needed to salt the roads.Ask him where tax payers money is going to.What a shame!!

Posted by: cabellcountymom on Nov 21, 2008 at 03:25 PM
I was very distured this morning to find out that Two of the cabell county school buses where stranded for a couple hours this due to the road conditions out Johns creek as a parent we where not notified to the situation and im sure the kids where antsy and hungry. As a community we need to put the safety of our chilrend first instead of being so concerned about attendance.

Posted by: Stephanie on Nov 21, 2008 at 01:15 PM
Why wasn't Cabell County School System on a 2 hour delay?

Posted by: Melinda on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:09 PM
EVERYTIME I HEAR THE ROADS GETTING BAD OR I HAVE TO DRIVE ON THEM TO AND FROM WORK I KEEP NEVER HEARING IF THE SALT TRUCKS ARE OUT THIS STUFF STARTED AFTER 5PM YESTERDAY OUR MOUNTAIN IS SO BAD IF YOU DON'T HAVE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE, STUDS, OR CHAINS YOUR NOT GETTING UP OR DOWN THE HILL, AND I HAVE YET TO SEE A SALT TRUCK. ARE THEY ON VACATION, WHY IS IT THEIR HAS TO BE A WRECK BEFORE THEY COME OUT, YOU GO TO OHIO WHERE ITS FLAT AND I PROMISE YOU YOU WILL SEE MORE SALT TRUCKS EVERYWHERE, NOT HERE!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:06 AM
there are rumors flying that the state department of highways is trying to unload the road cleaning and salting on to contractors any truth? The roads sure have been in bad shape early in this season

Posted by: Chris on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:59 AM
Why are the roads not salted anymore? I know WV no longer paves roads, but at least they can salt and scrape them!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:56 AM
Wrecks everywhere, busdrivers refusing to drive certain areas, sliding vehicles, low temperatures,,still the school systems continue to put our students, teachers and other staff at risk! What happened to 2 hour delays to see what the weather was doing? At least after daylight it would have been easier to see the black ice spots!

Posted by: Colleen on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:51 AM
Please explain why the roads are never treated until after there are at least 25 wrecks. Starting at 6 O'clock this morning you could hear all the sirens going to the accidents. Three hours later it is still a sheet of ice. There is no excuse for this. This is every time it snows. They do have chemicals out there that work when the temps get too cold. Some are saying it was unexpected. Last night on the national weather service it was stated that we were expecting snow. It seems to me that the accepted way to treat the roads is wait for the sun to melt it.

Posted by: Rachelle on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:24 AM
That was ONE HOT MESS! Cars and trucks that had slid off the road or hit something everywhere you looked. I literally didn't touch my gas between the mall exit and Hurricane. Traffic was crawling!! I saw the wreck that was pictured above, it was in the west bound lane. I hope everyone is okay. There must have been a bubble over everyone else because the road was dry when I hit the Hurricane exit. Crazy!

Posted by: Mom on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:18 AM
Sure was nice of the Board of Education to use their emergency telephone system to let us know the buses would not be running. Come to think about it they didn't even let the news media know either.

Posted by: Lisa on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:12 AM
No school delay for Cabell County this morning? Are you kidding me? Even my place of business had the God given sense to have a 2 hour delay, yet the school system puts the lives of Bus Drivers, Teachers and Students at risk instead of waiting a couple of hours for the roads to be driveable. The total lack of regard for safety is ridiculous.

Posted by: Luther on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:06 AM
To All Employers: I Have posted many times asking the women drivers to slow down and not drive in this weather, but they're not listening...so I beg you Employers, ask your women employees to NOT COME TO WORK on days such as this morning. We are tired of the cell phone chatting, makeup applying women drivers (and FL drivers) causing all the wrecks. Everyone else, please drive carefully and I hope noone was injured this morning in these senseless accidents.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:02 AM
Cannot believe the that Cabell County Schools were not on some kind of delay. The roads were horrible.

Posted by: bob on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:58 AM
they did not even touch the roads between the mall exit and the hurricane exit, once you get to hurricane then the roads are salted and dry. I saw 4 accidents between those exits and the Milton exit is a solid sheet of ice.

Posted by: dale on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:56 AM
Putnam and Cabell county schools should have been delayed. They shouldn't risk our kids lives for one extra hour.

Posted by: Candy on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:48 AM
"Dedicated to the Sucess of Every Student" is Cabell County Board of Educations slogan. Well I want to know who is looking out their front door and deciding its safe to put these kids on the road. They wont have sucess if they are in the hospital or even worse due to someones stupidity! How about the saftey of our children? We intrust the saftey of our kids to them and come to find out the roads are a sheet of ice. When a police car went over the side of the hill by Cabell Midland on tuesday due to the ice, it makes one think. And today the roads are even worse. Our Board of Education needs to make sure our children are going to be safe.

Posted by: Susan on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:47 AM
Where are the salt trucks?? Whose idea was it to allow thousands of teachers and students to drive on these dangerous roads? The intelligence of our community never ceases to amaze me.

Posted by: MMS on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:42 AM
My parent's car slid off the road.

Posted by: Amy on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:42 AM
My son is a student at Cabell Midland and I cannot believe the Superintendent didn't at least have a 2 hour delay. Did they even check the roads? Obviously not!

Posted by: Concerned Parent on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:38 AM
I can not believe or understand why they would endanger the children's lives on a morning like this and not call school off. I was one and hopefully many of the smart parents who didn't put my child's life in danger. When is someone going to stand up and do something about this? Is it going to have to cost a life before something is done?

Posted by: glenn on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:33 AM
im from texas and i know that when it snows you SLOW DOWN on the roads its not like ppl have never seen snow

Posted by: cmhs student on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:31 AM
Thats why cabell county should be on a two hour delay!

Posted by: Cheryl on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:26 AM
and yet the schools are still open. We saw 6 elementary Children standing right by the road on Rt. 2 waiting on a bus that wasn't running. The school didn't notify the parents that the buses weren't running either. I think something should be done about this.

Posted by: sandy on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:26 AM
We live just off Rt 60 and I can see traffic backed up onto Sycamore Rd.

Posted by: Melinda on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:15 AM
These roads are awful, why did they not cancel or delay School? I live in Milton and there were wrecks every where!

  • Posted By: omgI am so sick and tired of hearing how public school teachers are indebted to the public for their salary. Many of you are so freakin nosey that if your neighbor stopped too fast, you'd have to get a crane to remove your head from their rear. I am so tired of this drug test line. Teachers deserve to pee in peace and so do you. Why should teachers be forced to have their personal lives paraded all over the news? That is exactly what would happen. If a typical joe blow got fired from the coal mines for drugs, it wouldn't make front page news. A teacher being fired for drugs would. You people expect teachers to be the mother, father, grandparent, clergyman, counselor, as well as the teacher. You don't do anything with your kids but expect the teacher to fix all the problem you create. Some of them probably need drugs by the time they are done raising your spoiled kids who think the world owes them something on a silver platter. Take your own drug test before you get pregnant.
  • Posted By: SophieRe: The student (Hinzman?) being expelled for using foul language after being bullied & beaten on school grounds; you should not have been expelled for expressing your hurt, anger & disgust. You were a victim and did nothing. It is unreasonable to punish the victim - so what if he cussed - I'd cuss too if someone beat the beegeebers out of me. The kid who beat you should receive jail time & counciling; the kid who filmed you & released it on U-Tube should too. It has often been said that television is desensitizing our children so badly they have no empathy for others. This is a prime example. I hope the school board will have enough common sense to clear this victims school record of the incident as he should not have been expelled, and get him counciling also as such a trauma will surly have an effect on a young life.

  • Posted By: RickI think all teachers should be drug tested, I drive a transit bus for our county and I want the public to know I am drug free and teachers should want everyone to know the same, that their children are not in the care of people on drugs,if you have nothing to hide why object to random testing I know I don't
  • Posted By: TeaI can't even imagine that our teachers have not been drug tested up until this time. Anyone who refuses should be fired. These are our children!!! People take drug test when they don't even work with people, let alone children. These are government jobs and we should have a say in what they have to do.
  • Posted By: AriCheers to Rob-I feel ya!
  • Posted By: joeI have worked for companies all over this nation and have had to take drug tests. Why should teachers be exempt from this practice? It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: KatyAs a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!

  • Posted By: RobertAlthough I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.

Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: ChrisTo Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here, your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: PabloTeachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: CraigIf what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?

  • Posted By: Ex-OfficerI agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.
  • Posted By: GarlandWhat's the difference between teachers and other workers(coal mineers, bus drivers, state employees, etc.)? Teachers aren't any better are they?
  • Posted By: This is not a comment, but I would like comments on it please. What do you think of Poca High School? Racist or not?
  • Posted By: RobertWe the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
