CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Some very brave people spent the night outside to help raise awareness for the homeless at the second annual "One Night without a Home" event in Charleston Friday.

Eleven agencies worked together on this event, including the YWCA, the Salvation Army, and Covenant House. For many, Friday night was an opportunity to walk a mile in some else's less fortunate shoes.

“Tonight is really about raising consciousness about what it means to be homeless,” YWCA of Charleston’s Debby Weinstein said.

It’s a feeling Chris Markins experienced for himself earlier this year. He became homeless in August.

Markins suffers from a mental illness. He lost his job and could not afford his medicine.

“I went through the hospital system and found the organization called the West Virginia Mental Health Cons Association. They offer help to people who are homeless who have mental illness. I moved into their Transitional Housing Department and lived there, and through them found work actually working for the organization.

Now Markins has a home. He and a few others shared their experiences at Friday night’s event.

“I've slept in tents,” Phillip Hughs said. “I've slept in vehicles, I've slept in laundry mats.”

Both Markins and Hughs now help people whose shoes they were once in, and for organizers, the event is really about making sure homelessness is not forgotten.

The Salvation Army had their mobile canteen out serving everyone hot chocolate and coffee. Gov. Manchin also stopped by for a bit to show his support.

To Christine: One of the men featured in this piece DID live with my family for a while on several different occasions and my family and I gave him the ride it took to get him to the facility that changed his life. There ARE those of us who DO care. It's absolutely ridiculous to assume that everyone thinks homeless people are scum and bums. One of those men is one of my best friends and I am grateful that he had the courage to speak out to give a voice to the problems that some of these people go through. It was a long road for him, but he found help and I would and DO help others as well! I consider it an HONOR to know him and count him as a friend!

Hey Brenda, No apology needed, but thanks, I figured I would get some flack for my opinion, and thats just what it is..my opinion, and you know what they say about those. Thats the good part about having the freedom the homeless dont is to be able to say what you wish, without your blanket being swiped by some Big Shot who thinks he is hot. No harm No foul.

Candy I am sorry for the way I said that. You are right about the homless not having a hot cup of coffee and I did not vote for him either after he sided with Obama to tax coal out of bussiness. He is as dirty as Obama in my book. Please except my apology. But you are right he could do more for the homless I would have been ashamed to stop and drink their coffe that is just taking more away from them but he uses it as publicity.Thank God he can't run again

Dear Brenda & Beth. I take nothing away from the homeless. I work a regular job, with regular pay. Being born at a Salvation Army Hospital, I donate what I can to them. I work several funraisers. My point was not to take anything from the Homeless ...Ladies, they can use all our help they can get. A hot cup of coffee, that Manchin got press for is something they normally go without and I think that sucks, That after his stunt w/ WVU, that he would even have the Kahunas to even want free press for this. Stopping by Beth, ANYONE can stop by, it is the people who help that deserved the Kudo's NOT Manchin, I voted for him last term and have not been impressed, this just nailed the coffin for me as far as he is concerned. Brenda..I dont "go off" on people, I have some sense, we each have our opinions, and You and I just chose to agree to disagree. Thats what freedom means, something the homeless have little of. The homeless people dont have the freedom to even have that hot cup of "JOE".

These people who spent the night outside to make us "aware" should have someone sponsor them for every hour they stayed outside. For example if i had stayed outside and people sponsored me to stay out there 12 hours and one person said he/she would pay $20 an hour and another person said $5 an hour then i would have made $300 dollars for the homeless shelters. Then it would have been worth the people with homes to stay outside for the night in the freezing cold.

Posted by: christine on Nov 24, 2008 at 07:20 AM
#1.The homeless who are addicted to drugs and alcohol or have a mental illness there are homeless shelters and help out there but it not easy for them at all but i do not fell sorry for them at all. #2.The veterans with problems i do fell sorry for them but how can you tell who they are. #3.All you self righteous people who do fell sorry for these people how are you helping them i know you are not going to offer your homes to them or give them more than a dollar so just tell the truth you think they are scum and bums. #4.As far as for gov.Manchin he really could care less i do not see him letting any of them staying at his house either or doing anything for them. He stopped by yes but he did not spend the night with the rest of them. #5.Finally the people who stayed outside did not try and change anything the news report said they were trying to make us aware. Well, guess what we are aware we do not need these people to stay outside for one night to let us know there are people homeless

It is called cause and effect. I don't care what the homeless person problem is...If they did drugs, then that is their problem. McDonald's will hire anyone. All it takes is going to a homeless shelter until you get a couple checks. Its too easy to live on someone else's penny. Stop enabling them. Oh and they live on the street because they chose to due to lifestyle choices. This is Jason by the way, love ya!

Posted by: Janet on Nov 23, 2008 at 07:21 PM
So homeless people should just clean up their act and get a job? Where are they going to take a shower? What are they going to wear? What will they put on the application as an address? Phone number? Helping the homeless is giving to organizations that help them. You can't tell someone who is addicted to drugs and alcohol, or mentally ill to just change in one day and get a job. It has to start at a more basic level than that. How thoughtless to make that comment. Do y ou really think they want to live on the street?

Posted by: Beth on Nov 23, 2008 at 03:01 PM
Candy, atleast the Governor stopped by there.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 23, 2008 at 02:08 PM
i agree with Candy Gov Manchin needs to buy and hand out blankets to the homeless they have no money and can not buy blankets ,coffee or even food. I say the Gov needs to set up a booth with hot food and drinks for the homeless and use his money for good ...not stuped stuff he buys for his family's degrees....

Posted by: Heather on Nov 23, 2008 at 10:41 AM
You know, I applaud these people for trying to change homelessness. But, it really needs to start with drug awareness and alcohol awareness. These "homeless" people 90% of the time are alcoholics and drug addicts. I have no sympathy for someone like that who won't go get a job.

Posted by: Christie on Nov 23, 2008 at 10:10 AM
It is uncomprehensible that we have athletes, movie stars, and multi-million dollar campains for the president, yet we still have people without jobs,homeless...something is wrong with this picture!

Posted by: Brenda on Nov 23, 2008 at 09:35 AM
This is about the homeless Candy not what some Governor did or did not do.These homeless people need all of our help and yes before you go off on me I do support the homeless with money food and clothing. That is something all of us could do no matter how little we have God blessed us with that and he wants us to share it.There is no reason to not help someone who needs us.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 23, 2008 at 09:03 AM
why is it that if ordinary people spend a night outside they make a big deal of it? Where are the news people and the hot chocolate given away when the homeless are out on the street. Its sad that we spend so much money on a war thats not even our own when our own people are sleeping on the streets!!!!

Posted by: Jessie on Nov 23, 2008 at 08:00 AM
Its nice to hear that someone is helping those people cause the DHR doesn't help anyone anless they have a address, and it can't be a p.o. box either. That office ishalf backwards on how they help the people that don't want to help there self, but don't want to help the people that do.Maybe this event will change peoples mind in helping them more instead of bad mouthing them.God bless everyone at this event.

Posted by: Jason on Nov 23, 2008 at 07:34 AM
Who cares about the homeless? If you people would stop giving to them, they would leave Huntington. Stop enabling them and make them decide to join society or starve. It's a win win situation that way. Please do not use veterans as a excuse for all homeless.

Posted by: Clark on Nov 23, 2008 at 01:51 AM
I noticed that there was a fire to keep the people warm and they had refreshments. I don't think this REALLY depicted what homeless people go through. They don't all HAVE tents, fires to keep them warm and refreshments. I'm glad people tried to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless....but if they REALLY wanted to experience what it's like, they should have left their tents and food at home. Those things would be considered luxuries to those without a home. Most of us take the blessings GOD gives us,for granted.I KNOW that a lot of homeless are in their predicament by their own doing, but we should STILL try to help. GOD instructs us to love our brothers and sisters.

I with Candy on this one.Gov. Joe is nothing but a joke.

Posted by: wvmom on Nov 22, 2008 at 09:32 PM
I would like to have something like this in my neck of the woods. Especially if it brings more awareness to the reasons people become homeless.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 22, 2008 at 09:16 PM
i think this was a dumb idea!! homeless people do not have a mobile canteen serving hot chocolate nor do they have friends or relatives standing around talking with them. some people will do just about anything for attention.

Posted by: been there....... on Nov 22, 2008 at 09:10 PM
"Why were they "brave"? they got to go back to their homes when it was over." EXACTLY!! " Salvation Army had their mobile canteen out serving everyone hot chocolate and coffee." Don't get me wrong, it's great that they did that, but WHERE ARE THEY EVERY OTHER NIGHT? I'VE BEEN homeless before.......after having been an RN making $50/hour!! Slept in places I never dreamed I would. Found food as best I could. "Walk a mile in their shoes?" A mile couldn't BEGIN to tell you what it's like.......TRY 100 MILES! PLESAE.....DON'T GET ME WRONG......I'M GLAD THAT THIS AWARENESS NIGHT TOOK PLACE. JUST PLEASE DON'T GLORIFY THOSE THAT "RETURN TO THEIR HOMES" I now have somewhat of a roof over my head, I finally got a little montly check that comes in, but I WILL NEVER FORGET HOW CLOSE EVERYONE IS TO BEING HOMELESS!! I have fed many of the homeless here with whatever I had. I've given them blankets, coats, whatever I could to help. That's what they need!!

Posted by: Candy on Nov 22, 2008 at 08:42 PM
Gov Manchin stopped in for Coffee??? Does he seriously think that the homeless people can afford to buy a cup of coffee. Show your support some other way Gov Manchin, like some blankets or some Cash, Yes Cash would be good, better spent on the homeless than buying your daughter a bogus degree...OOOPS...did I say that out loud? That was supposed to be a secret..all nice and covered up. No harm no foul..He took a homeless persons blanket to cover it up..for shame.

What a wonderful event to spread awareness regarding individuals who experience homelessness! Thank you, WVMHCA, and other organizations, for sponsoring this activity! Although WVMHCA is the lead sponsoring agency, I was disappointed that they were not mentioned during the news piece, however, the interview with the two gentlemen indicated the important work that WVMHCA does on a regular basis. My hat goes off to this agency!

Its simple NO TEST, NO CHECK. This is not an attempt to violate rights, it is an attempt to enforce the publics right for our money to go to people in government and on welfare who can be TRUSTED.

  • Posted By: omgI am so sick and tired of hearing how public school teachers are indebted to the public for their salary. Many of you are so freakin nosey that if your neighbor stopped too fast, you'd have to get a crane to remove your head from their rear. I am so tired of this drug test line. Teachers deserve to pee in peace and so do you. Why should teachers be forced to have their personal lives paraded all over the news? That is exactly what would happen. If a typical joe blow got fired from the coal mines for drugs, it wouldn't make front page news. A teacher being fired for drugs would. You people expect teachers to be the mother, father, grandparent, clergyman, counselor, as well as the teacher. You don't do anything with your kids but expect the teacher to fix all the problem you create. Some of them probably need drugs by the time they are done raising your spoiled kids who think the world owes them something on a silver platter. Take your own drug test before you get pregnant.
  • Posted By: SophieRe: The student (Hinzman?) being expelled for using foul language after being bullied & beaten on school grounds; you should not have been expelled for expressing your hurt, anger & disgust. You were a victim and did nothing. It is unreasonable to punish the victim - so what if he cussed - I'd cuss too if someone beat the beegeebers out of me. The kid who beat you should receive jail time & counciling; the kid who filmed you & released it on U-Tube should too. It has often been said that television is desensitizing our children so badly they have no empathy for others. This is a prime example. I hope the school board will have enough common sense to clear this victims school record of the incident as he should not have been expelled, and get him counciling also as such a trauma will surly have an effect on a young life.

  • Posted By: GeorgeAs a parent I have no problem being drug tested. I'll stand in line right behind Katy.
  • Posted By: goodorbadI look at it like this-if you dont have anything to hide, shut up and do the test!
  • Posted By: RickI think all teachers should be drug tested, I drive a transit bus for our county and I want the public to know I am drug free and teachers should want everyone to know the same, that their children are not in the care of people on drugs,if you have nothing to hide why object to random testing I know I don't
  • Posted By: TeaI can't even imagine that our teachers have not been drug tested up until this time. Anyone who refuses should be fired. These are our children!!! People take drug test when they don't even work with people, let alone children. These are government jobs and we should have a say in what they have to do.
  • Posted By: AriCheers to Rob-I feel ya!
  • Posted By: joeI have worked for companies all over this nation and have had to take drug tests. Why should teachers be exempt from this practice? It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: KatyAs a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!
  • Posted By: stephenWhy the heavy emphasis ont he damage to property and life Israel is doing . Where was the media uproar for years that Hamas was rocketing Israel irespective of innocent israelis.. Hamas is actualykilling their own citizens by firing rockets from UN schools and residents. Why does UN allow Hamas to use facilities for attacking Israel, then complain when Israel responds to protect their territory and citizens. Israel targets military targets, respons to from whence rockets or gun fire comes. What would we fire at if Huntington was attacked? Why does the media not put bla,e where balame belongs, and give moral support to the aggreived. What would America do if attacked? to whom would we listen? Russia, Saudi Arabia,Iran?.Media get REAL! Who has given Hamas and the Palestinians millions with which they could buy weapons---American taxpayers money!
  • Posted By: RobertAlthough I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.
  • Posted By: BoydIf the state's budget is doing so well, why don't we use some of this money to help towns and cities in the state who are in trouble with their budget, or will this just become another pay raise for politicians?
  • Posted By: RobWhy does everyone have to be so into using the term "racist" and have that kind of attitude. I know what my heritage is and who my ancestors were but you want to know what I consider myself? I AM AN AMERICAN! I was born and raised in this country and that's how I feel it should be. Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: ChrisTo Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here, your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: PabloTeachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: CraigIf what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?
  • Posted By: teresaracist lmao i am one cherokee, german, irish, german, and who knows what else TIRED of hearing of racist comments u are either GOOD OR BAD k no skin color needed just evil or NOT
  • Posted By: Ex-OfficerI agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.
  • Posted By: GarlandWhat's the difference between teachers and other workers(coal mineers, bus drivers, state employees, etc.)? Teachers aren't any better are they?
  • Posted By: This is not a comment, but I would like comments on it please. What do you think of Poca High School? Racist or not?
  • Posted By: RobertWe the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
