KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. -- Some supporters of metro government in Kanawha County are worried the initiative will not pass and, as a result, are voicing their concerns.
Some even want the Legislature to step in. The metro government initiative hasn't reached the ballot yet in Kanawha County, and it's not expected to until 2010.
But some are already predicting it won't pass unless the laws are changed. By current law, it will take 55 percent of the vote to pass metro government. If it's not lowered to closer to 50 percent, Charleston Mayor Danny Jones believes the vote is a waste of time.
Even with a possible change in the law, metro government supporters still know they have a tough battle ahead to convince voters this style of government is right for the them.
Last week, Kanawha County leaders made their second trip to Louisville to see how metro government works there. It took four votes to pass the initiative in that community. It finally passed with 54 percent of the vote in 2000.
