WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two women are dead, two other hurt after the van they were in struck a moving coal train.

It happened just after 5:00 a.m. at a railroad crossing about four miles north of the town of Wayne on Route 152.

The Wayne County Sheriff says the driver of the van, 38-year old Samantha Fields of East Lynn; along with 41-year old Alberta Lewis of East Lynn were killed.

2 other passengers, 16-year old Abbie Fields of East Lynn, and 17-year old Cayla Ann Frye of East Lynn were critically injured.

We're told the van was heading south on Route 152 at the time of the crash.

Investigators say there are skids marks near the crossing

We're told the van slammed into one of the coal cars as it went through the crossing.

The sheriff says the engineer didn't know the train had been hit until contacted by railroad dispatchers.

A witness told investigators that the crossing lights were on when the crash happened.

Several hours after the crash a Norfolk & Southern crew inspecting the crossing lights, said they were working.

Does anyone have an update on the 2 teenagers? Or if they have spoken about how this could have happened? Unless Wal-Mart changed their operational hours they couldn't have been shopping in Wayne. That particular one is open 6am-11pm. Our prayers are with the families.

Sounds to me like the driver was distracted, the train whistle blew, the lights were on, the railroad cars have reflective tape on the sides. No ice in area or there would not have been skid marks to measure. Very sad accident but could it be possible that the driver was tired, distracted, driving to fast,or just plain didn't see the train until it was to late. There is a speed limit in that area and no one pays attention to it, that's why there are so many accidents in that area, NOT THE TRAIN. My prayers go out to the family. The idea of a underpass is silly, if drivers can't slow down now, and bounce off trains they don't see, they'll bounce off underpass walls as well. Leave home earlier, driver slower, follow the speed limit, stay off the cell phone, stay off the bumper of the car infront of you, drive safer, and cut down driver distractions as much as possible.

Oh, that is messed up, if it is the same place I'm thinking of, the tracks by that little grocery store or coming from H-town you can turn left and go to lavalette. I mean the light is right there on the tracks and like one person said you can't see anything until you are right up on it. When I have to go out there I pray that the light is green b/c I'm afraid that a train will come and the place where they make you stop well it might as well be on the tracks, it does need to be put back a little ways..Hope those ppl are okay, my heart goes out to the family.

i was at the railroad crossing waiting for the train to get through there today around noon and i was thinking about what happened to these sisters and the girls. when i eventually saw the end of the train there was no kaboose. then i wondered if the train in the accident had a kaboose. are trains required to have a kaboose and if so, does a train employee have to ride in it. during this accident if there had been a kaboose with someone riding on it, maybe the train could of been stopped alot sooner. i agree with the person who brought up putting underpasses. i believe more can be done to prevent train/car accidents in our area.

My heart aches for the family and friends of Alberta and Samantha. Years ago they were students of mine and my husband as were their surviving sisters Laura and Melissa. Memories of them are as vivid today as if we were back in the classroom. We pray for a speedy recovery for Kayla and Abbie who were also former students. To Laura (Turtle) and Melissa (Charlie) know that you and your entire family are in our thoughts and prayers! We send our love and prayers. Sue and Bill Hardin

Folks, if you would like to check out a web site dealing with train safety, go to WV Operation Lifesaver at www.wvol.org. The gentleman above is correct. Federal and state law do not require train horns to blow at private crossings, only public crossings.

I am praying for the families of the families. I knew Alberta from years ago, and know what a nice and funny person she was. Her two daughters have been in my thoughts and prayers today.

As much money that the Railroads have you would think they would build underpasses in high traffic area's. You can't even get out of Kenova without going over tracks. How much money does it cost every time there is an accident. Between the lawsuits and man hours for investigation it would probably cover 5 or 6 underpasses. I hate waiting on trains as well. How would they like it if I just stopped them from doing what they need to do for 15 or 20 minutes. It's crazy. No other profession has the power to just stop you for no good reason other than they need to go somewhere. How many accidents would be avoided with trains if we had underpasses? ALL OF THEM

Don't say she wasn't seriously injured. I can't imagine the horror this lady went through. She will be afraid the rest of her life.

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 3, 2008 at 01:37 PM
I almost had an accident in that same area. The train whistle sounded like something was wrong with my car and the lights are hard to see being in a curve. My passenger alerted me and had to swerve onto a wide spot just by the crossing. Blessed Be to those girls and their families.

My heart goes out to all the family and friends of this people.. May GOD be with you now and through the Holidays! GOD bless you all! This comment is for MM that left the comment on Dec. 2, 2008 @ 10:02pm. I somewhat agree with you comment. But, the statement you made about if the driver was paying attention it wouldn't have happened. Well, I believe that is in a way wrong. Because everything happens for a reason! And, it was the day that the Big Man Upstairs had marked for them to leave this life, no matter if it was at the railroad crossing, it would have been somewhere else or in some other way. It was their time to go. It is sad that it happened and in this way! And, my heart goes out to them and everyone that knows them. I am deeply sadden for the two girls that witnessed the death of their mothers... There is nothing you can say to ease the pain that the family is going through! May GOD be with them all! GOD Bless!

I have not seen these girls, I guess now they were considered women, in many years. We grew up with Alberta, Laura (Turtle), Sam and Melissa (Charlie). Bonnie and Abb (their parents) were best friends of my mom and dad. It really brought me to tears when I heard the news. You never think anything is going to happen to you or to someone you love. It is very sad and I hope and pray for the strength and the courage for their Mom, Bonnie and two sisters that they pull thru this together and be there for each other. Know that there were many many people touched by their lives and we pray for healing of both girls in the hospital that they will pull thru this. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Posted by: Debbie on Dec 3, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Jaynie if someone is going to TBone a train blowing a horn won't matter, she didn't hit the front of the train, but blame doesn't matter either, I pray the girls survive and the family gets thru this. How sad.

I'm very sorry about your loss, hope for the best for the survivors, and will keep you in our prayers.

even if the lights were working this time they don't always work. i went thru the tracks at the dixon dip one day and the lights weren't working at that time and as i was passing by, the train was coming around the curve and i didn't see it til i was on the tracks. i think crossing rails need to be at every track and be far enough back to stop someone before it's too late. they always put them up right by the tracks, that doesn't make much difference. if they were further back, it would really help. in this case, they could be back on the other side of that bridge. it's all about money and there never is enough for times it's needed, only for helping out the businesses who are going bankrupt and we pay for that, like the bail-out for citi. i would rather my tax dollars go for things like this. the government doesn't care if it doesn't benefit them. my prayers go out to chas and cayla...god will be with you in your time of loss.

I think this was a horrible accident. I hope Abbie and Kayla pull through this and find strength. I hope God is with the family and the train crew. I know that they will be in my prayers now and for the months to come. Times will be hard for them and they will want to give up but God will hold their hand and be in their hearts as well as all of ours. God Bless!!

Posted by: Jaynie on Dec 3, 2008 at 01:44 AM
I know that this time the train was not at fault here. But there is a comment on here from a train engineer that says they blow their horn at every crossing. That is not true. I live down the little road to the left of were the wreck happened. To get to my house you have to cross two more sets of tracks. I can't tell you the number of times the train does NOT blow its horn. It just pops around the curve and you better hope you aren't in the way. More needs to be done to prevent these type of accidents.

It's the train tracks by Dr. Thompson's office, Dunroven, etc. Heading towards Wayne, it's just past Save-a-Lot, before you get to Wal-Mart.

To anonymous on Dec 2, 2008 at 02:10 PM: I totally disagree with your statement. Losing a loved one like this is not the hardest way to lose one. What about a sudden illness, etc.? The driver should have been paying attention and this never would have happened.

I too have crossed those tracks often. I do know the tracks are there when it's dark, but It never occured to me that this could happen until it did happen. Those railroad cars need some type of reflective tape. I would also be able to see the crossbars first if they had them. Unfortunately, it always takes a tragic accident to have something done. My heart goes out to these people and I do know it could have happened to any of us who travel in that direction.

If what people are saying is true, I doubt that a 8 foot wood plank with reflecters on it would have saved their lives. If they didn't notice 4 flashing red lights, how would a crossing gate stop them? it would have just split in two and they would've hit the train anyway. A crossing gate is not a guard rail.

There are at least 4 flashing red lights in both directions at that crossing, and it is at the end of a straight stretch of road if you are headed south as this van was. The crossing is rough and the road curves to the right after the crossing. Red and white reflective tape applied to the sides of the coal cars would help. Prayers for all involved.

What a tragic loss of life. From all accounts I'm hearing, the train itself was not a factor in this case. Everyone needs to learn from this accident, slow down, pay attention, and don't get distracted from the road under ANY circumstances. This is a very dangerous place even without the the railroad tracks. The bridge there can be icy, as well as the curve itself. I hope the families can recover (somewhat) from this. It always seems that there is something like this happening around the holidays. Train tracks are not the only dangers on the highway there are deer, pedistrians, and crazy drivers abound here anymore. Let's all not let the loss of these lives be in vain. Pay attention no matter how well well you think you know the road. Most fatalities occur within a sort distance from home or work. We all need to realize the potential dangers of a moving automobile weighing a ton or more at any speed. May God comfort all who knew these people. May the train crew be comforted as well.

According to some reports I have looked up on the internet the railroad reports there are crossing gates at some of these crossings I for one would like to know where on 152 between East Lynn and Huntington are there any crossing gates. I have seen this in writing. I know this may not have saved their lives but it sure would'nt hurt. The railroad should have crossing gates at every crossing on main 152. Might cost them some dollars but might help save someone's life.

Posted by: Patricia Puskas on Dec 2, 2008 at 04:22 PM
...these women were sisters.

Posted by: brenda on Dec 2, 2008 at 04:17 PM
I drive that roadway daily. Yes, there are lights and they do work. But I can understand how weasy it would be to noat be aware until you are right up on the trains. There should be more caution lights a few feet before coming around the curve to the red lights. A crossing bar with more lights on it would be a great benefit...it would get one's attention faster than a light off to the side. The train track crosses the highway many times...and real effort should be done to prevent such a tragedy to happen in the future. Often the train cars blend in with the roadway and that is a distraction too.

Posted by: Amy on Dec 2, 2008 at 04:14 PM
I grew up with these girls and my heart goes out to their mother, two sisters, and other family members. I pray that God will uphold them and give them much comfort and strength during this tragic time.

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 2, 2008 at 04:04 PM
I was a first responder. The eye witness said they never even checked up. Drove right into the side of the train like there was nothing there. The train crew did not even realize anything had happened. 911 dispatchers called the railroad and the railroad dispatcher had the train come to a stop. By the time they stopped they were about a mile away. Crossing gates would have none nothing in this particular incident. People in that area have got to respect these crossings. An average of 2 trains every 24 hours travels on that line. When a train and a vehicle do battle... the train wins every single time. Be cautious people! It is very easy to become complacent. Its not worth it.

A witness said the lights were working. The van hit like the 73rd car, so it wasn't like the train operators could do anything about it, they were a quarter mile up ahead. Probably got distracted, and it was still dark. I agree that all these crossings need gates tho. May have made a difference, who knows. I'll say a prayer for the families/victims. Sad.

Being a parent that has lost a child, my thoughts and prayers go out to the families. Losing a loved one is hard, but losing them this way is the hardest. There is nothing anyone can say that will ease the pain of the suffering these families are going through. We all have heard of these tragedies happening elsewhere and we never dream of this happening in our community. Reach out to other loved ones, friends and be strong as everyone in the community mourns with these families.

Posted by: Train Engineer on Dec 2, 2008 at 01:48 PM
Contact your local Congressman in order to get the funding for crossing gates to be placed at this crossing. The government pays for the warning devices and the railroad installs them. It is sad that this has happened. Grade Crossing incidents are the biggest fear that a railroader has in the back of his mind when he goes to work. That's why we blow the whistle at all crossings. The trains traveling in that area only goes 10 miles an hour. I'm sure there are a lot of factors that could have prevented this accident. The public needs to make themselves aware of the location that grade crossings are located and approach each one with the Look, Listen, and Live attitude. The railroad has a program called Operation Lifesaver that reaches out to the public to better educate on the dangers of trains and grade crossing safety.

Im so sorry to the family. My prays and thoughts are with you. But to those that put blame on the tracks the lights were working. I was the 6th or car back and thay never hit there brakes. But the lights were flashing.

i think all crossings should have bars and flashing lights no matter what! it would be more safer for everyone.

I know the family and they have suffered losses over the last few years. I pray that the one with the two boys that lost their father has not lost their mother too.

It was the 74th train car out of 100. This is terrible, please pray for these families during this time of tragedy. No negative post please. The family and friends need support during these times. God bless all involved.

I live near that set of tracks, and I really wish the railroad would install the automatic crossing bars, because the signal lights are in a curve and hard to see. My heart and prayers go out to the families of all involved.

I'm very sorry for this huge loss, but how do you not see a train. Common sense say's when you see the R/R crossing, you look both way's. Anyway, I will say a prayer for their families tonight.

People grew up with abandoned tracks in this area. I could see how it happens, I constantly forget about these tracks.

Its simple NO TEST, NO CHECK. This is not an attempt to violate rights, it is an attempt to enforce the publics right for our money to go to people in government and on welfare who can be TRUSTED.

  • Posted By: omgI am so sick and tired of hearing how public school teachers are indebted to the public for their salary. Many of you are so freakin nosey that if your neighbor stopped too fast, you'd have to get a crane to remove your head from their rear. I am so tired of this drug test line. Teachers deserve to pee in peace and so do you. Why should teachers be forced to have their personal lives paraded all over the news? That is exactly what would happen. If a typical joe blow got fired from the coal mines for drugs, it wouldn't make front page news. A teacher being fired for drugs would. You people expect teachers to be the mother, father, grandparent, clergyman, counselor, as well as the teacher. You don't do anything with your kids but expect the teacher to fix all the problem you create. Some of them probably need drugs by the time they are done raising your spoiled kids who think the world owes them something on a silver platter. Take your own drug test before you get pregnant.
  • Posted By: SophieRe: The student (Hinzman?) being expelled for using foul language after being bullied & beaten on school grounds; you should not have been expelled for expressing your hurt, anger & disgust. You were a victim and did nothing. It is unreasonable to punish the victim - so what if he cussed - I'd cuss too if someone beat the beegeebers out of me. The kid who beat you should receive jail time & counciling; the kid who filmed you & released it on U-Tube should too. It has often been said that television is desensitizing our children so badly they have no empathy for others. This is a prime example. I hope the school board will have enough common sense to clear this victims school record of the incident as he should not have been expelled, and get him counciling also as such a trauma will surly have an effect on a young life.

  • Posted By: GeorgeAs a parent I have no problem being drug tested. I'll stand in line right behind Katy.
  • Posted By: goodorbadI look at it like this-if you dont have anything to hide, shut up and do the test!
  • Posted By: RickI think all teachers should be drug tested, I drive a transit bus for our county and I want the public to know I am drug free and teachers should want everyone to know the same, that their children are not in the care of people on drugs,if you have nothing to hide why object to random testing I know I don't
  • Posted By: TeaI can't even imagine that our teachers have not been drug tested up until this time. Anyone who refuses should be fired. These are our children!!! People take drug test when they don't even work with people, let alone children. These are government jobs and we should have a say in what they have to do.
  • Posted By: AriCheers to Rob-I feel ya!
  • Posted By: joeI have worked for companies all over this nation and have had to take drug tests. Why should teachers be exempt from this practice? It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: KatyAs a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!
  • Posted By: stephenWhy the heavy emphasis ont he damage to property and life Israel is doing . Where was the media uproar for years that Hamas was rocketing Israel irespective of innocent israelis.. Hamas is actualykilling their own citizens by firing rockets from UN schools and residents. Why does UN allow Hamas to use facilities for attacking Israel, then complain when Israel responds to protect their territory and citizens. Israel targets military targets, respons to from whence rockets or gun fire comes. What would we fire at if Huntington was attacked? Why does the media not put bla,e where balame belongs, and give moral support to the aggreived. What would America do if attacked? to whom would we listen? Russia, Saudi Arabia,Iran?.Media get REAL! Who has given Hamas and the Palestinians millions with which they could buy weapons---American taxpayers money!
  • Posted By: RobertAlthough I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.
  • Posted By: BoydIf the state's budget is doing so well, why don't we use some of this money to help towns and cities in the state who are in trouble with their budget, or will this just become another pay raise for politicians?
  • Posted By: RobWhy does everyone have to be so into using the term "racist" and have that kind of attitude. I know what my heritage is and who my ancestors were but you want to know what I consider myself? I AM AN AMERICAN! I was born and raised in this country and that's how I feel it should be. Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: ChrisTo Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here, your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: PabloTeachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: CraigIf what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?
  • Posted By: teresaracist lmao i am one cherokee, german, irish, german, and who knows what else TIRED of hearing of racist comments u are either GOOD OR BAD k no skin color needed just evil or NOT
  • Posted By: Ex-OfficerI agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.
  • Posted By: GarlandWhat's the difference between teachers and other workers(coal mineers, bus drivers, state employees, etc.)? Teachers aren't any better are they?
  • Posted By: This is not a comment, but I would like comments on it please. What do you think of Poca High School? Racist or not?
  • Posted By: RobertWe the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
