Lincoln County Bus Driver Charged With Molestation

Updated: Mon 8:49 AM, Aug 21, 2006

It's something most parents do each and every morning. They put their child on the school bus. But how well do you know the person taking them to school? On Sunday, school leaders in Lincoln County were speaking out now that police allege one of their drivers broke the trust he was given each school day. It's information parents everywhere need to know.

Police say a place for children was turned into a crime scene by their own bus driver.

Wendall Williamson is charged with sexually assaulting a fifteen-year-old twice during the 1999-2000 school year. The victim says he threatened to kill her if she told.

Lincoln County Superintendent Doctor Anne Seaver says every school employee is given an extensive background check, and bus drivers go through quite a bit of training.

“What goes through my mind is our children,” said Seaver. “Do they have someone they can talk to freely with out fear of retaliation?”

With school back in session, it's not just the kids that have homework. You as parents do as well. Your assignment is to get to know the person sitting behind the wheel.

Mark Miller drove a school bus for eleven years. Knowing parents made a huge responsibility a little easier.

“I like to know that I could go talk to them if there is a problem, instead of just dealing with it,” said Miller.

One incident isn't a reflection of all bus drivers, but a good reminder for everyone to work together for the little people who fill the bus seats.

Wendall Williamson is the bus driver charged, and he has been released on bond. He's 39-years old. The Lincoln County Superintendent says he will be suspended without pay until there is a resolution in this case, but adds he is innocent until proven guilty.
