CHESTERLAND, Ohio (AP) - One positive aspect to the recent wintry weather: Several ski resorts in northeast Ohio say they have a firm base of snow and are enjoying an increase in skiers.
Dan Murphy, a spokesman for Boston Mills/Brandywine in Peninsula, says the slopes there have about 40 inches of snow, although much of it is man-made.
George Shaffer, manager of Alpine Valley in Chesterland, says preseason sales are up 28 percent compared to last year.
Saturday's expected rain and spring-like temperatures will likely mean fewer skiers this weekend.
But Shaffer says Alpine Valley and other local ski resorts should continue to benefit from the "staycation" trend, which budget-conscious families look for less expensive recreational activities closer to their home.
