CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia miners who believe environmentalists are giving the industry a bum rap are planning a campaign to emphasize the importance of coal to the nation's economy and security.
Citizens for Coal is the brainchild of Roger Horton, a truck driver at St. Louis-based Patriot Coal Corp.'s Guyan mine. Horton envisions Citizens for Coal as a way for miners to educate lawmakers and the public about the industry and counter criticism of mountaintop removal mining.
Horton says no one's telling the public about the tax money generated by mining, how miners live and that they're not villains out trying to destroy the environment.
Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition executive director Janet Keating says Horton's group sounds like another front for the coal industry and wonders how much money mining will spend to convince the public that its lies are the truth.

Coal is cheap, but at what cost? We can employ far more people if we mined coal in a less invasive form. The price would rise, yes, but not a lot, and we would not destroy people's homes and our mountains. The mountains are removed. They are pushed into the riverbeds, strangling the water flow and ecosystem below. The trees are clear cut and pushed into the valleys. Even they could be salvaged and sold but we instead throw them to the side! It is mountaintop removal and it needs to stop.... please.

scream lowd and clear about utilities that working people and productive people will not be able to pay if coal isnt kept at the lowest price possible.strip mining has come a long way enviornmintly.people who live off the fat of the land and filthy rich like al gore dont have to worry about the high cost of utilities.yet they dont have to modify their lifestyle just you and me.to hear them tell it we are selfish and evil to expect affordable utilities.this cant be a wispering campaign or no one will listen. it cant be politically correct and half lies to keep from stepping on someones toes or it will be inefective.
