CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Massey Energy subsidiary has been fined $180,000 for three violations that federal investigators say contributed to an injury accident at a West Virginia coal mine last February.
Mine Safety and Health Administration director Richard Stickler says in a statement Wednesday that Massey's Highland Mining ignored cracked and loose rock above a haul road and did nothing to protect truck drivers at the Freeze Fork Surface Mine in Logan County.
MSHA says a driver suffered head and neck injuries when a section of highwall collapsed, partially burying his truck.
Spokesman Jeff Gillenwater says Massey disagrees with Stickler and will contest the fine. He says the injured miner was checked at a hospital but didn't miss any work.
The Richmond, Va.-based company is the nation's fourth-largest coal producer by revenue and operates mines in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia.

Being a wife of a Massey-employed Coal Miner, I can tell you from first-hand knowledge that Massey puts pressure on hurt miners to return to work so they can say "the miner didn't miss any work due to injury". Massey sends a "safety officer" to the hospital with miners injured on the job. This "oficer" tells them that they must come back to work or risk their job security. Massey routinely covers up all injuries, accidents, incidents, and poor work conditions. The only ones they can't hide are the big ones that hit the media. You'd be surprised at all the injuries, close calls and accidents no one hears about. Listen up all reporters, you should send someone underground as an undercover reporter so you can see for yourself the horrible conditions and equipment these men are subjected to, the lies "Daddy Don" tells media, and the accidents that happen due to poor management, equipment, men forced to work 6 days a week and poor conditions.
