Boone County Labor Day Picnic

If you had Labor Day off, it may be a day to stop and think about the men and women who have helped to shape America's work force. The United States has been celebrating this day for more than one-hundred years, and for fifty years, it's held a very special meaning in the Boone County town of Racine.

It's a day when summer unofficially ends, and campaign season officially kicks into high gear. While politics might steal the spotlight, the real reason for this rally is humble.

It’s about everyone who knows the value and the importance of a strong work ethic. It’s special because Carl Shamblin knows the true meaning of a hard days work. He has more than 40 years with the UMW under his belt.

“You feel better when you work a little bit, and a lot better than you do sitting around watching TV,” said Shamblin.

But on Labor Day, long hours and longer days are reflected in the things he loves. And on Labor Day, coal country took a break, and many take home lessons, knowing that a job well done is always something to celebrate.
