It may not sound like the basis for a criminal case -- criticizing police -- but two woman believe that's the story behind their conviction Friday in Mingo County.

Late Friday night, a jury found Betty Jarvis and Wanda Carney guilty on charges of obstructing a murder investigation. Carney runs a political watchdog group called West Virginia Wants to Know. Jarvis used to sit on the Kanawha County School Board.

Jarvis' nephew was charged in connection with the death of drug informant Carla Collins. State police say the two women broke into the home of another suspect and took several items while conducting their own investigation. A jury agreed.

Carney and Jarvis will be back in court Monday to get fitted with home confinement bracelets. A judge allowed them to go home this weekend, ruling neither were risks for flight. They will both be sentenced October 10th.
