COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Governor Ted Strickland wants lawmakers to limit what health insurance companies can charge to people with chronic conditions, who buy individual policies.
The proposal is part of the governor's plan to provide coverage for 110,000 uninsured Ohio adults.
Strickland spokeswoman Amanda Wurst says the cap on premiums will be part of the governor's proposed budget, which will be introduced in the General Assembly soon.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that the cap would be 1 1/2 times the lowest rate charged to a person of similar age and gender.
The cap would only apply to the individual health insurance market, not employer group plans.
Insurance companies say that would mean higher rates for the 400,000 Ohio residents who buy individual policies.

Something needs to be done in Ohio, I am a diabetic with no insurance. It is to high where my husband works, but if you are an alcholic or drug addict the government will help you get your pain pills for either you to take or to sell them. If you work for a living you might as well give up. I want more than anything to be able to SEE my daughter grow up and get married, but without some help or insurance we can afford, I worry about being blind or dead before she is raised. My 3 year old daughter is also uninsured and I worry every time she gets sick how we are going to pay for everything. EVERY CHILD should have a medical card before any adult!
