DC Doc Gives Byrd Clean Bill of Health

WV Senator Robert Byrd (D) is 88 years old. According to the attending physician in Congress, Byrd could serve for some time to come.

Dr. John Eisold sent a letter to Byrd's office today. The letter reads that Byrd has "no physical or intellectual limitations set by me (Eisold) that would preclude further public service."

The letter comes one day after the campaign for candidate John Raese (R) raised the age issue. Former WV Governor Cecil Underwood endorsed Raese and said he doubted Byrd could physically handle another six years in office. Underwood cited his own experience as an example. He went into his early 80's without any major medical problems and has been in out of the hospital for several ailments in the past year.

Byrd's campaign says the doctor's letter confirms that Byrd is fit as a fiddle.

"With all due respect to Governor Underwood, we believe his prognosis is way off. Senator Byrd plans to stick around for quite a while," Mark Ferrell, Byrd spokesperson, said.
