CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (WSAZ) --The Ohio River bridges in Ironton and Portsmouth will be closed for a number of hours the next two weeks for a series of regular inspections.

The Ohio Department of Transportation says that on Wednesday and Thursday, March 18 and 19, the Ironton-Russell Bridge will be closed during daytime, business hours.

The U.S. Grant Bridge will be closed on Wednesday, March 25, in order for crews to conduct load testing.

The work will be performed by a team from the University of Cincinnati Infrastructure Institute, who will be measuring truck loads to assess and confirm the load rating analysis for each bridge.

Along with other regularly scheduled inspections, these tests are part of the department’s maintenance and research program for bridges maintained by ODOT.

While the inspections are under way on the scheduled days, the bridges will be closed to traffic from approximately 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the structures open to traffic at all other times when crews are at work.

Traffic from the Ironton-Russell Bridge in Lawrence County will be detoured by way of U.S. Route 52 and the Ashland, Ky., bridge east of Coal Grove.

Traffic from the U.S. Grant Bridge in Scioto County will be detoured by way of U.S. 52 and the Carl Perkins Bridge, west of Portsmouth.

As long as the bridge is bouncing actually flexing it's safe but still needs to be checked out and your right who comes up with the idea of closing the bridge when 52 is dropped to 1 lane just your state tax dollars at work

Please keep on this story for the results from the load testing especially the Ironton-Russell bridge it wouldn't be surprising for this structure to fail the test. I hope the test will include moving weight because that's when it starts bouncing. We all hope a new bridge will be built soon.

Why in the world do they always do this at the exact same time as they plan to close route 52 to one lane??? They have done this before, last year. It creates a MAJOR traffic nightmare. Here they have had all this time to inspect the bridge while rt. 52 was back up to 2 lanes, and now they are closing rt.52 again on Monday down to one lane, so now they decide to close the Ironton Russell bridge...again. Who are the genius people who come up with the timing for these projects???
