LOGAN, W.Va. (WSAZ)-- A loss of water put city officials in Logan on alert. They knew there was a leak in their water system, but the trouble came with finding it.

The search for the leak began on Friday and didn't end until Sunday. City workers say this break was extremely hard to find.

"The water was going down and going out man holes and outlets. It wasn't coming up, and that's why it was so difficult to find," Everett Brumfield said.

Everett manages the city's water plant and says he's never encountered a break like this in his more than 30 years working for the city.

To find the break, workers had to shutdown the water plant for several hours Sunday. The whole city of Logan was left without water, but they found the leak on Bridge Street.

During the three day search, thousand of people across Logan County went without water. The county brought in 5,000 gallons of water for people and it went within a few hours.

Harvey Carter and his wife were among the people who took advantage of the free water, but he says the help should have come sooner.

"I don't see why they didn't bring a tank or something in the area last night for the people, set up some kind of tank where they could get water," said Carter. "All of the stores were out of water."

Now that water is running through the lines again, Logan Mayor Serafino Nolletti hopes things can get back to normal.

"I'm really sorry for the inconvenience it's been for the people for this area, but I think a lot of people understood we've worked very hard on getting this problem fixed."

Water customers will remain on a boil water advisory for the next few day.

The Logan County EMS squad will be handing out bottled water at their station in Logan on Monday at 9:00 a.m.

Due to the water issues, the West Virginia Department of Education's website shows that the following schools will be closed Monday, March 16th:

-Logan High School
-Logan Middle School
-Logan Grade School
-Verdunville Grade School
-Willis Career Technical Center
-Dehue School
