UPDATE @ 10 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- While it's a waiting game to see which school districts will get what they want, Putnam County potentially could receive $22 million of the $60 million SBA money.
Statewide, the requests total about $300 million dollars. Putnam County school officials have requested $22 million to build a new Winfield Middle School.
The only way they would get the money, however, is if taxpayers help out and approve a $55 million dollar bond. The money from the bond would be used to build new schools for Poca Middle, Confidence Elementary and Buffalo High.
It would also fund renovations at Poca Elementary and build auxiliary gyms at each of the county's four high schools. The SBA will announce which projects it will fund on April 20.
Kanawha County is asking the SBA for about $10 million.
UPDATE@4:20pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Superintendent Ron Duerring asked for more than $9M to build a new elementary school in Kanawha County. Students from J.E. Robins Elementary School and Watts Elementary School would attend this school on Charleston's west side.
Duerring also asked the SBA to approve a $100,000 planning grant for Bonham Elementary. This would allow school board members to study the best solution for the students and teachers there. Bonham has flooded several times in the last few years.
Moving Bonham students into existing elementary schools is one option the board is considering, but the study will help school board members find the best solution.
Putnam County's Superintendent Harold "Chuck" Hatfield asked the SBA for $22M on Monday. The money will help build a new Winfield Middle School, but only if the county approves a school levy.
The levy would generate another $55M to build a new Buffalo High School, Confidence Elementary, and Poca Middle School. The money would also fund renovations at Poca Elementary and four auxiliary gyms at the county's four high schools.
The superintendent tells WSAZ.com the levy would be up for vote in late summer or early fall.
ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The School Building Authority of West Virginia is considering several school "needs" projects for 2009.
This week board members will hear presentations from several superintendents across the state on why they should get help funding projects in their counties.
For example, Superintendent Ron Duerring is expected to ask for funding for a second elementary school for Charleston's west side. This will be a separate project from West Side Elementary School that's already funded.
Duerring meets with the SBA around 4:00 p.m. Monday.
Cabell County Board of Education is expected to ask for $22 million for a new middle school. Cabell's superintendent is expected to present his plan on Tuesday.
Right now, the SBA has about $60 million to hand out. However, the SBA has applied for money under President Barack Obama's economic stimulus plan. If it is granted the authority would have $200 million to fund state projects.
The authority will hear from more superintendents on Tuesday.
The authority is expected to make a decision on what projects to fund by the end of next month.
Latest Comments
The Board Of Education should have chose to rebuild Bonham before ANY other new construction in the county. They sit in a flood zone and to overload Flinn with MORE kids is ridiculous. Shipping them OUT of their community just to fund their "promised" school is out right theft!
