UPDATE @ 5pm
By Carrie Cline, WSAZ
POMEROY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Saved by a ledge! A dog cheated death after falling off a cliff. But, that's just the beginning of this cliffhanger. Buster, the dog, couldn't go anywhere and no one can get to him--until a team of ropes rapellers arrived on the scene to attempt a nail-biting rescue.

“Buster!” hollered Darlene Fisher, the dog’s owner.

Darlene was worried sick.

“Is he moving?” she asked.

Her dog, Buster, had been stranded on a ledge over Pomeroy, Ohio, for nearly ten hours. While she kept vigil from the ground, her husband watched from overhead.

“Buster! Behave!” shouted Daniel Fisher.

Though tempting, the path down to Buster was too risky. One slip could mean a deadly fall.

“They’re sending in a special team that has the proper equipment to go get him,” said Daniel.

Jon Tobin and his special operations dive and rescue team from Athens County arrived and accepted the challenge. Chuck Adam made the rescue attempt.

“You always have to weigh the risk and the benefit. If this had been a different ledge or different conditions, we might have said no,” said Chuck.

After carefully setting up and after painstakingly suiting up, Chuck headed down over the edge to take a look at the situation.

Buster wasn't too happy about the situation, so the team suited up Daniel to see if he can calm his dog.

“It’s just fear aggression. We have a tranquilizer to calm him and bring him up if we need to,” said Thomas Proffitt, the Meigs County Dog Warden.

But, the tranquilizer could also send Buster over the edge. So, the team passed and decided to take their chances. After some tense moments, Daniel was pulled back up.

Not far behind, came Chuck--and Buster was tucked into the bag--safe and fairly sound.

“Oh, I’m so glad! My daughter will be so happy. She was crying this morning and we sent her to school and told her to focus on her schoolwork and Buster would be here by the time she got home. I’m so glad he’s okay and will be home,” said Daniel.

“Dogs have an impact on humans and so we’re thrilled to be able to rescue this dog and return him safely to his family,” said Chuck.

The special operations dive team responded to this call at the request of the Pomeroy Volunteer Fire Department. The team is trained for what they call high angle rescues as well as water searches and recoveries. However, this is their first dog rescue.

ORIGINAL STORY
POMEROY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A family pet that fell 40-feet off a hillside is fine after being rescued from a hard-to-reach location.

It happened in just off Main Street in Pomeroy, Ohio, Thursday morning.

Darlene and Daniel Fisher say their dog "Buster" broke his chain and wandered off about 3 a.m. Thursday morning.

Buster, a 2-year-old 150-pound Rottweiler, got to the top of hill when he stepped off the edge, falling about 40 feet to a ledge below.

The Fishers soon realized there was no way to get up or down to Buster. At that point, they called the Pomeroy Fire Department, which then called in a special rescue team from Athens County.

The rescue team then rapelled down the hillside to the dog, but ran into a problem when Buster didn’t want to cooperate.

The rescue crew then sent Busters' owner down on the rope line to calm the dog. That worked and Buster was raised up to safety.

WSAZ has a crew on the scene for the rescue. Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for more information and video of the rescue when it is available.
