CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A West Virginia lawmaker has fielded plenty of ridicule, insults and even threats since proposing an in-state ban of Barbie and similar dolls.
But Delegate Jeff Eldridge reaped a standing ovation from House colleagues Thursday after he explained his reasons for the bill.
The Lincoln County Democrat also detailed some of the thousands of e-mails and phone calls, both pro and con, that have bombarded him since his ban bill debuted earlier this month.
Eldridge has degrees in counseling, and said he's concerned about the pressure put on girls regarding body image and weight.
He said bad parenting worsens these pressures, and helped prompt the bill.
Eldridge also apologized for the backlash that West Virginia and the Legislature have endured.

You have to love how the tax money is being spent. If you want to stop bad influening toys, then get rid of the shoot 'em up and kill 'em blood bath games that are out right now. I would rather my kids play with Barbie dolls or GI Joe dolls than video games that promote KILLING people and chasing down drugs and stealing cars. Why not work on making more of the parents on welfare who are using and abusing it get off their butts and get jobs and stop teaching their kids it's ok to live off what everyone else works and pays into for them to do nothing but sit back and take it??
