CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- More than 100 photo stories about life in West Virginia's southern coalfields are on display at The Clay Center Art Museum in Charleston.

The photographs and narratives were created by 40 women who used digital cameras to tell the stories of their five communities.

For seven months, the women have taken part in the Photovoice project, designed to increase civic engagement in rural communities.

The exhibit is also intended to give residents an outlet for sharing their concerns and their ideas for change.

The five groups have met every month to share photographs, discuss themes and create stories.

The exhibit runs through Sunday.
