HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A commission of doctors and others in tune with health care say if the eating behaviors of children do not change, the average life expectancy will drop for the generation of children we are raising now by five years.
An alarming trend shows that one in five 4-year-old kids throughout the nation are obese. The study from Ohio State University said more than half a million of our youngest citizens are already struggling with weight problems.
Health officials say when a child is obese, chances are they will continue being overweight as an adult.
That's what prompted Leslie Sparks, a kindergarten teacher at Prichard Elementary School in Wayne County to try to get kids interested not only in cooking -- but cooking healthy.
"Cooking is one way to get your kids excited about eating new and healthy things," she said. "I just think they're never too young to choose healthy foods."
Sparks and her class have teamed up with Shawn Bresnahan, the owner of Le Cook Store in downtown Huntington. The classes focus on getting kids interested in working in the kitchen and making healthy choices -- a lesson Bresnahan says will pay off for these kids in the long run.
"If you don't start them young, they're not ever going to get started, Bresnahan said. "By the time they're in college, it's not Taco Bell. It's healthy eating."
If you're interested in getting your child into cooking classes -- or maybe you're interested yourself -- contact Le Cook Store and they can help get you signed up.

Leslie Sparks, you are the best a kindergarten teacher i ever seen. i wish if i have kids u teach them
I think this is a great idea and should be expanded! However, I have to say...Taco Bell is actually one of the healthier fast food joints, if you know how to order properly.
