HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Throughout the region on Wednesday, there seemed to be a real sense of urgency for Earth Day.
Those pushing to go green included a wide variety of folks from all walks of life. It truly was a desire extending from the corporation to the classroom and seemingly everyone in between.
Folks from Moses Auto Mall brought a van full of used computer and electronic components to be recycled instead of dumped in a landfill.
Goodwill Industries featured a 2009 green team recycling contest, and students from about 20 local schools collected a record nineteen tons of recyclables. The kids said Earth Day urgency is a personal thing for them.
"It's our future," Enslow Middle School student Mary Bunten said. "If no one else cares, we will be the ones to suffer."
At Marshall University, students with the Marshall Environmental Science Association (MESA), fought what they call the Mountain State disgrace, referring to West Virginia being the 50th least green state in the country.
By contrast, local grade school students on Wednesday planted trees, including in the Guyandotte area.

Guess you all know your bodies make good fertilizer if you go green and a hell of a lot cheaper than the funeral home/grave yard Zombies plan.Check out the new green grave sites that are around.
we need more experts.bradford pear is not a fruit tree.its ornamental.just a little friendly humor.but i don,t know why fruit and berry bushes are not used more.makes sense to me.then any one who is not too lazy can enjoy picking and using the harvest.
Well hello there children of WV. This is your friend Big Earl telling you to not listen to those tree hugger PETA type teachers and go out and chop down some trees to keep your daddy working in the coal mines. These "teachers" have no clue about how valuable coal is to or region but Big Earl does. You kids need to waste as much energy as you can if you want Santa Claus to visit your house this Christmas.
