Hundreds of people walked around the Capital Complex on Saturday, to raise awareness about Down Syndrome. The walkers took part in the 2006 National Buddy Walk in Charleston.

Three-hundred and fifty thousand Americans are living with Down Syndrome and Richard Morton's son Caleb is one of them.

“Caleb is 8-years-old, and when he was born we didn't know anything,” said Morton. “There was nobody to tell us anything."

That's why Morton got involved with the Down Syndrome network of West Virginia. Now, parents with newborn babies with Down Syndrome have help.

Buddy Walks like the one in Charleston will be held all across the country this fall. They raise awareness of Down Syndrome. This is the 5th Annual Buddy Walk in Charleston.

Morton has one simple piece of advice for parents of kids with Down Syndrome.

“If you have a child, treat him like any other child because he is not going to break,” said Morton. “He's just a normal child who has Down Syndrome, at a slower pace.”

The Buddy Walks also raise money for research and local programs and services. Last year, the walks raised almost $6 million dollars.
