Winterizing Your House
As the temperature continues to drop, there are many things you should do around your house to prepare for the cold weather. Some simple home improvements could save you money and discomfort later. Charleston's Habitat for Humanity hosted a workshop on Saturday, to show you just how to prepare.
Teryl Cawood just moved to Charleston from California, and she's not exactly prepared for the winter weather.
“So I am just trying to learn what the weather does back here and what kind of problems the elements are going to cause me,” said Cawood.
That's why she went to Habitat for Humanity's workshop to learn how to prepare her home for the winter. And one area the workshop focused on is covering your pipes.
Another important home improvement to do is to reduce air from coming in and out of your home.
Sealing cracks around windows and doors could cut your monthly heating bill by as much as ten percent.
Another easy way you can save some money this winter is by turning down your thermostat. Set it between 65 and 70 degrees when you're at home, and if you plan to leave your house for more than a few hours, turn it down to 58 degrees.
