Special Session
West Virginia state legislators are all back in Charleston tonight -- just days after the mid-term election. Governor Joe Manchin called a special session to focus on tax reform and now it's in the hands of state representatives. Many legislators say they're glad to be back, but some, mostly Republicans -- are questioning the reason and the timing for this session.
Tax reform is a big topic and both do agree this is just a starting point.
Everyone here seems to agree tax cuts are needed...Republicans want to get rid of the food tax altogether...while the the governor is proposing to drop the tax another one percent -- a trend he plans to continue the following year. Delegate Bob Ashley stood up and called this session just fluff.
Another complaint from Republicans, they say there's no room for debate during this session.
It's not clear exactly how many days the session will last. Several committees are now reviewing the proposal but the majority of these tax cuts are expected to pass. There are 13-items outlined, 11 that specifically deal with taxes. Beyond the food tax, other cuts include breaks for the poor and elderly, along with several business tax cuts.
