Gift Card Scam Warning Save Email Print

Authorities are warning consumers of a possible scam involving gift cards. Scammers have found a way to steal the money from the popular holiday gifts. The scam involves someone copying the numbers off a gift card in the store and then waiting for the card to be activated. When the card becomes active, the thief simply uses the card until all the money is gone.

Merchants we spoke with said they had not recieved any complaints about this scam and said that they use a variety of security techniques to thwart the scam artists.

One sure way to avoid the scam is to purchase the gift card directly from a customer service representative rather than take one that is sold from a store display.
