HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The City of Huntington has turned over control and maintenance of Harris Riverfront Park to the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District.

It happened during a sub-lease signing ceremony that took place Friday morning at the Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitor's Bureau in Heritage Village.

During a May meeting, Huntington City Council approved the ordinance that transferred management of the park to the Park District. The agreement calls for the city to give the park district $201,400 in the next fiscal year to help maintain the park.

That includes $25,000 in Federal Community Development Block Grant funds to buy new park benches, water fountains and trash cans.

The nearly 25-acre riverfront park is actually owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the city has a lifetime lease on the park.

The Park District officially takes control of the park on July 1.
