ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- It was a fitting tribute Saturday for a man who dedicated his life to making the world a more pleasant place to live.

Friends and family said a final farewell to Bruce Craft. Over the past few decades Craft became known as "The Champion" of Ashland's Central Park.

He was the founder of the park board, a tireless volunteer and recreation innovator.

Craft craft died June 9th, 2009 at the age of 84 after a long battle with cancer.

Saturday, his funeral was held at Ashland's Central Park Bandstand. Craft was a major force in building the popular spot.

As Central Park's Recreation Director for 16 years, Craft never accepted a paycheck.

He founded the Ashland Tree board and had the city put in a skating rink. Craft even began the popular donkey derby, one of his favorite endeavors.

The WWII veteran worked at Ashland Oil for 28 years.

This Spring, Ashland renamed its Central Park Tennis Courts in honor of Craft.
