UPDATE: 6/18 2pm

PIKETON, Ohio (AP) - A lead energy company says there is no firm commitment to build a proposed nuclear power plant that politicians are hailing as a gateway to clean energy and a source of much needed jobs and revenue in rural Appalachia.

Duke Energy spokeswoman Rita Sipe in Charlotte, N.C., says the Thursday announcement of the proposal merely keeps open the option of a nuclear plant.

Gov. Ted Strickland, Sen. George Voinovich and Rep. Jean Schmidt were at the Department of Energy site near Piketon, about 80 miles east of Cincinnati, for the announcement of the creation of a Southern Ohio Clean Energy Park Alliance.

Sipe says the project is just in its formulative stage and planning is so preliminary that the partners don't know how much of an ownership role they will assume.

UPDATE: 6/18
PIKETON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Plans were formally announced Thursday morning for construction of a multi-billion dollar nuclear power plant in Pike County, Ohio.

The announcement was made at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant near Piketon, Ohio. That's the site of a former uranium enrichment plant.

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland says the project involving Duke Energy and a French energy company -- Areva -- is "a new and visionary partnership."

The plant will employ 400-700 permanent workers.

Between 1400 and 1800 people will be needed to build the facility; with a peak of 3,000 construction jobs.

ORIGINAL STORY
PIKETON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- While the speculation is running rampant nationwide about a possible nuclear power plant in southern Ohio, here's what we know:

Politicians, energy CEOs and labor leaders will gather Thursday at the Piketon Atomic Plant to announce a multi-billion dollar clean energy production center coming to the site.

Sen. George Voinovich said it's nuclear, and so do local labor leaders and insiders, who can hardly contain their excitement.

There's plenty of room for what the new president of the local Steelworkers and Atomic Workers union said will house the first nuclear energy plant built in Ohio in decades.

According to Bobby Graff, Duke Energy and a French nuclear energy company will join with the private United States Enrichment Corp. in construction and operation on the Piketon site.

U.S. Congresswoman Jean Schmidt will attend the announcement. She told us the proposed project will be an economic shot in the arm for the entire region.

"I believe that in three or four years, you will see 4,000 construction jobs," she said.

In past decades, safety and exposure issues involving clean up of nuclear waste at Piketon gave thousands of sick retirees millions in health benefits, but the potential workers at the proposed nuclear power plant said this is a new era.

We have a growing population that needs power. Wind power project in WV was stopped due to indiana endangered bats..Sometimes people need to step out of areas where they have no knowledge and leave these needs to the informed and educated..

As an alternative to having our sons and daughters die in the Middle East desert over a war for oil, I would welcome any nuclear power plant. Al power generation methods carry hazards we cannot control, but we can control the risk by putting safety policies in place (not the difference between harard-- uncontrolled damger and risk --controlled danger! The resurgence of n-power actually initiated under Bush. See the NRC web site map and listing of new plants planned: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/new-licensing-files/expected-new-rx-applications.pdf In particular see the map here -- these were not conceived under O'Bama (he's Irish, isn't he?), but his support is crucial: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/col/new-reactor-map.html
