HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- There's no question Downtown Huntington is growing.
From Pullman Square to new developments along Third and Fourth Avenues, new restaurants and retail shops are popping up all over.
However despite the growth, one local shop recently closed- a victim of the economy.
It's not all bad news though for the owner who is already working on plan B and C.
"It is disappointing. It's like watching your child be born and die all at once," said Shawn Bresnahan.
Two and a half years ago, Shawn Bresnahan, the owner of Le Cook Store, was beaming with hope for an exciting future in Huntington’s Downtown along Third Avenue.
We interviewed Bresnahan Back then and he said, “We’ll have the best pots and pans and fine wines and tabletop mixes as well as porcelain tableware."
But, despite a prime location right across from Pullman Square, the very products he elevated were what dragged him down.
“Our products were just too expensive for this market,” said Bresnahan.
It wasn't all bad though, what did work, Bresnahan is looking to keep and re-format into a new smaller version of Le Cook Store at another downtown location in the coming months.
“Our cooking classes were our number one seller. That was followed by our ready-made sauces and mixes. Our kitchen gadgets flew out the door,” said Bresnahan.
That is not all Bresnahan has in the works though.
He is also getting ready to open a new restaurant, called the West Virginia Rib Station.
Ribs slow-smoked southern style plus all the fixings will be the main menu, but Bresnahan says he will also offer other items in weekly specials.
The restaurant will be small with an emphasis on carry-out, but patio dining will also be a feature.
The restaurant is located in the Heritage Village inside the new Welcome Center at the Cabell Huntington Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
“This will be the perfect location for folks to come after enjoying a day on the river,” said Bresnahan.
The rib station will open by July 1st, to take advantage of the Fourth of July weekend.
Latest Comments
I agree with unanimous that the stores that locate downtown should stay open till at least 9 or 10 on Fridays and Saturdays.
To the owner of Le Cook: If you are going to be a retail store near or inside Pullman Square, you have to be open during the hours when people are there. When I say "people", I mean those who work for a living and therefore have money to shop in your store. The vast majority of those of us who do work, do so during the very minimal hours that your shop was ever open. I tried several times to shop at Le Cook and the store was NEVER open! How can a shop owner in their right mind not be open on a Friday or Saturday evening when Pullman Square is BURSTING with people? Le Cook isn't the only store down there with this problem. It really boggles my mind to think that you aren't smart enough to pay someone minimum wage to keep your store open and garner five times the cost of doing so in extra sales!
