UPDATE @ 9pm
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- At Tri-State Race Track, officials are making good on a project promise that also happens to be state law.
On Wednesday, state leaders and project coordinators broke ground on a casino hotel. The project has to be completed by August 2010. The deadline is three years since the time the table games issue was given the go-ahead by Kanawha County voters.
But the folks behind the project say -- while they know time is counting down -- they feel it was a benefit to the state.
The hotel has been scaled down a bit. It went from 250 rooms to the minimum required by state law, which is 150. If the hotel isn't up and running by August 2010, the track will owe the state $2.5 million.
ORIGINAL STORY
NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center is ready to break ground on its hotel.
A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
The racetrack plans to build a 150-room hotel that will be four stories high. It will have a Mardi Gras theme.
Part of the deal that voters approved was that a hotel would be built by August of 2010. If the racetrack misses the deadline it faces a $2.5 million fine each year.
The hotel is much smaller than first reported. The racetrack originally announced it would be a 250-room hotel.
We will have a crew at the ceremony. Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for the very latest information.
