COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Governor Ted Strickland says the GOP-controlled Ohio Senate has rejected his plan to erase the state's $3.2 billion budget gap.
The news Saturday is a major blow to negotiations on the two-year spending plan, which lawmakers are scrambling to finish by a July 1 deadline.
Strickland said in a statement that Senate President Bill Harris told him the Senate would not support the governor's suggestions. The most crucial component is the governor's plan to put slot machines at Ohio's horse racing tracks to raise an estimated $933 million.
Strickland asked the Senate to say instead what taxes it would raise or what further cuts it would make.
The dispute over the $1 billion gap threatened to derail efforts to get the budget done on time.
A message seeking comment was left with Harris spokeswoman Maggie Ostrowski.

Yea, let's vote out the GOP so Cuz' Gov. can pass whatever he wants. We'll be in great shape then!!! Let's forget about checks and balances. And who needs libraries anyway...let's continue the Ohio trend and let our kids fall further behind. They can always make a career out of flipping burgers or living on welfare (which would put the state further in debt).
I agree with you kyguy, socialist government is whats to blame everywhere.
