HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ)-Local animal rights activists are trying to bring attention to a proposed dog tethering ordinance by chaining themselves to trees at Ritter Park.
The group says the idea is to show how unforgiving the elements can be to a dog that lives on a chain.
This chain-off event is part of a national effort by "Dogs Deserve Better," a non-profit organization.
Huntington councilwoman at large Rebecca Thacker took part in the chaining event Sunday.
These activists handed out literature and asked people to sign a petition against the current city ordinance that is making its way through city council. The group says the ordinance doesn't go far enough.
Jacqueline Muth is one of the people speaking out against the ordinance,"It says you can chain your dogs for 10 hours they don't even specify if its consecutive hours or if it is two on two off. It's totally impossible to be enforced.. And what we want is a ban on permanent chaining."
The activists chained themselves up to trees at Ritter Park for more than 8 hours Sunday.

Since when are compassion and respect for humans and animals mutually exclusive? And when was the last time you left your trailers to go help ANYBODY or anything? As far as I am concerned, the fact that DDB even HAS members in WV, is a sign of hope for your backward, ignorant, white-trash state.
We seem to agree that chaining for short periods of time would be fine if people didn't abuse it & chain 24/7 for life. So one of 2 things should take place, either citizens should join in to raise heck about 24/7 chained dogs for life when they see it or they should pass and support a law prohibiting it. No one wants more laws, but they do want this suffering to end. So instead of arguing against this, start figuring out what you can do to make things better. Honestly, it is a long time coming. Thank you for your support.
I am a DDB supporter but good luck getting these laws changed in WV!!! The bottom line is that REDNECKS should not have animals. I'm shocked you people who think it's OK to leave a dog chained up (as long as he's "took care of") could even read this story. I have no doubt you treat your children as well as you do your dogs. Go snort your pain pills and turn your dog in to the nearest Humane Society. I would imagine that if he was "euthinised" there, he would be out of your care and out of his misery. You WV, KY and OH hillbilly animal abusers will get what's coming to you.
