PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With millions of dollars worth of school projects ready to go, the only way Putnam County will receive $22 million in state funding is if voters approve a school bond.
The bond will be used to replace some of the oldest schools in the county and those that are considered too small. Buffalo will get a new high school, and a new Poca Middle School would be added to the elementary school, which also will see upgrades.
Meanwhile, Confidence Elementary will be replaced, and each of the high schools will get auxiliary gyms. Furthermore, the SBA money will be used to build a new Winfield Middle.
The bond would cost homeowners about $10 a month for houses valued at $100,000.
The vote is set for Aug. 29 and, by law, the projects on the bond have to be built.

To the poster who said they will chance their minds once the bond passes please note the last line "by law, the projects on the bond have to be built." Let's not vote no just to spite the school board. They are trying to help us, we just have to accept it.

I have set it before and I will say it again - building a new high school for the few students in Buffalo is not a financially responsible decision. The folks in Buffalo can complain all they want about long bus rides but there are students on Rt. 60 and Rt. 34 who have longer bus rides then the majority of the students in Buffalo. What happens when someone asks for a high school on Trace Creek - which would probably serve as many if not more students then Buffalo. And then there is the aux gyms - are you serious? You want to raise taxes to build aux gyms - have we lost focus on what schools are about - EDUCATION, not sports. Not that you could tell it at Hurricane High School...

Have you been in Winfield Middle School? I have because my child went to school there. It is SAD!!! The bathrooms are just terrible as is much of the school. My husband went to Middle school there 30 years ago and not much had changed when he went back. No doubt other schools need upgrades or maybe torn down and rebuilt. Has anyone looked at Hurricane? There is where all past monies have been spent while other schools such as Winfield, Buffalo, and Poca have been let go. I will be voting YES as I want ALL these children to have the same opportunities. If you are so worried about the monies being spent then go to the public meetings and let your voice be heard!!!!!!!!!
