UPDATE @ 12:00pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Turnpike's governing board has approved toll increases despite opposition from people who live along the 88-mile highway's route.
Members of the Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority voted unanimously Wednesday to raise tolls for passenger vehicles from $1.25 to $2 and for large trucks from $4.25 to $6.75.
The toll hikes are effective Aug. 1.
Steep discounts were approved for motorists who purchase EZ Pass commuter passes. They will pay $1.30 for passenger cars and $5.40 for large trucks.
Authority members said the toll increases are needed keep the highway between Charleston and Princeton from falling into further disrepair.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Parkways Economic Development and Tourism Authority just voted to free up some money that's not toll related at the Tamarack to offset discounts for the E-Z pass.
Members are going through a resolution right now before they vote on the toll increase.
UPDATE @ 9:50am
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Leaders from across the state are addressing the Parkways Economic Development and Tourism Authority about the possible toll increase.
Morris Canter, member of the Regional Chamber, says the people of Southern West Virginia aren't mad that there has to be an increase, they're mad at what he calls a mismanagement of funds.
He also thinks authority members should have gone after stimulus funds.
Senator Don Caruth says that upping the toll is penalizing southeastern West Virginia and is adding insult to injury.
Brenda Miller is a nonprofit director in southern West Virginia who told the authority they should "consider what they are doing to other budgets in the state."
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- After months of debate and deliberation, the hour of decision is near for the West Virginia Turnpike Authority.
The Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority is scheduled to meet Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center to consider raising tolls for passenger vehicles from $1.25 to $2 and for large trucks from $4.25 to $6.75.
The authority said toll increases are needed to keep the 88-mile highway between Charleston and Princeton from falling into further disrepair.
Politicians representing people living along the turnpike's route say the toll discriminates against southern West Virginia residents. They oppose any increase.
Tolls haven't increased since 1981.

Joe Manchin is a joke. When they raised the tolls the first time to 2 dollars, he was aginist it, now he's all for it. If there is something in it for him, like a master degree for his daughter, or a job at a law firm if he introduces a bill for a lobbyist who owns the law firm, the he is there, but if you call him asking for help, he is either to busy, or there is nothing he can do. As fo Obama, the life is you knew it when he won the election. As I said before, there needs to be alot of questions asked to the Turnpike Board, as what they did with the $9.8 million the federal government gave them for road maintance. Everyone of them needs to be removed, and replaced, the toll increase was a done deal before they did any of the meetings. We were lied to by the board when they said it would only be $1.60. The road is the worse one, and there is no reason it should not have been fixed years ago, but the only fattened their wallets like they did with the federal money, and now with this.
Thank you democrats for raising taxes on everything, obama and manchin are the worse leaders in this countrys history. when obama took office the unemployment rate was 6.9 now its 9.5, gas was a record low at 1.29 a gallon now its over 2.89 a gallon this isnt change we can believe in its change we can forget. obama reminds me of jimmy carter the worse president in history. he had a terrible economy and his foreign affairs and the way he ran the military in the ground was a disgrace. well welcome back carter!!!!!!!!!
People from Southern WV will be less likely to attend concerts at the civic center, shop at the charleston mall, go to Marshall games or other stuff where they have to travel the turnpike. money that could have been spent in WV will now go to Roanoke, virginia.
