RIPLEY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Downtown Ripley is getting a whole new look. The utility poles along Main Street are being removed.
"It was a 1930s look," said John Nagle, a small business owner in downtown. "You look at all the old photographs and that's what you see."
The removal of the utility poles is part of the city's main street project. All the power lines were moved underground last summer.
"It just made downtown Ripley a more pleasant place and beautiful city," said Carolyn Rader, the mayor of Ripley.
The changes are not just good for the eye, some shop owners say they're also good for business.
"It's bringing more people downtown to our shops and they're shopping at home locally instead of traveling a great distance," said Karen King, a small business owner in downtown Ripley.
Mayor Rader says the total cost of the utility pole project will reach 1.2 million dollars.

1.2 millon to remove power poles? What has the mayor or city council for that mayyer done to bring in jobs to this town?O ur young people still have to leave town to get work. Our sister city in Spencer done just that!As for shopping local,we either have to go to parkersbur or Charleston to shop theres no place here except Wally World.Even the city council goes out of town for their dinner meetings on our dime...Get real people
How does getting utility poles taken down equate more business downtown? That makes no sense.
In response to the comment above about people shopping locally instead of travelling a great distance...Im sorry but just because utility poles are removed doesnt change the fact that there is NO WHERE to shop in Ripley. Some of the local small business's kinda suck. The shops are more directed to older people and not to anyone under the age of 40.
