A Kentucky State Police trooper was killed Tuesday night when his cruiser collided with another vehicle in Pike County Kentucky.
State Police said 28-year-old Jonathan Leonard was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on U-S 119 in Sidney in Pike County. The crash happened about 6:30 Tuesday night.
The driver of the other vehicle, Eugene Sisco, Jr. was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. A University of Kentucky Medical Center spokeswoman says Sisco, was in critical condition at the hospital.
Leonard was on duty at the time of the crash, but investigators have not said if his lights and sirens were running.
Trooper Leonard is a three year veteran of the state police. He’s worked out of the Pikeville post his entire career.
"The loss of Trooper Leonard is tremendous and it permeates throughout the entire Kentucky State Police family," said KSP Commissioner Jack Adams. "We are all saddened beyond words. Our sympathy goes out to Trooper Leonard's family and I ask that you also keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
Trooper Leonard is the 24th Trooper to lose his life in the line of duty and is the first since Trooper Johnny Edrington was killed on December 21, 1988.
Kentucky State Police will be investigating the accident further today. For that reason there will be periodic road closures of US 119 in Sidney from 9 to noon.
