COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland met with reporters Thursday to update the state's budget impasse at an afternoon news conference, heading into a holiday weekend of scheduled legislative hearings.
The Democratic governor and the Republican-led Senate have been
at loggerheads over Strickland's proposal to authorize slots-like
video lottery terminals at the state's seven horse racing tracks.
The plan is estimated to raise $933 million toward the state's $3.2
billion projected deficit.
Among compromises being discussed are that the governor would
issue an executive order authorizing slots to insulate lawmakers
reticent to cast a pro-gambling vote. The Legislature would in turn
put language in the budget that the governor says is needed to ease
investors' concerns and attract the largest possible investments.

i think slots are a great idea. they will attract money that would otherwise be spent somewhere else. for instance the gambling boats in indiana. we could of had those at one time.

I think the headline, "Strickland addresses budget" is misleading. This is July 2. The budget was due on June 30. the governor has worked and released an overhaul of the educational system, and what he wants to spend, but not how to pay for it. The Demos in the General Assembly held on to the budget, not passing it to the Senate as a political ploy to embarrass the Republican Senate. And then suddenly, in a panic the Governor hails slots as the savior of the budget. Political, but not professional
